Researchers in Finland have found that people who drink more coffee carry less body fat and more muscle than people who drink little, at the same body mass index. They also found that the clearest hormonal effects appeared in men, and that the design of their study cannot establish cause. Neither qualification has survived contact with the headlines.
The study, published in the European Journal of Nutrition in July and picked up widely this week, drew on 2,264 Finnish adults aged 46, followed since birth as part of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966. The University of Oulu team compared habitual coffee intake against body composition, circulating metabolites, cardiometabolic markers, and sex hormones.
The Findings
Higher coffee intake tracked with lower total and visceral fat, the type that accumulates around the organs and carries the most metabolic risk, and with greater skeletal muscle mass.
Body mass index was broadly the same across the intake groups, as were waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio. Two people can share a BMI and have quite different bodies underneath it, which says more about that measurement than about coffee.
Higher intake also correlated with lower circulating branched-chain amino acids in both men and women. Sustained elevation of these amino acids has been associated with insulin resistance and risk of type 2 diabetes.
The Part About Women
Almost every headline this week leads with testosterone. That portion of the research is essentially about men.
Among men, higher intake was associated with a more favorable glucose and insulin profile, higher total and bioavailable testosterone, and higher sex hormone-binding globulin, alongside modestly lower free testosterone. Among women, the hormonal picture was thinner, amounting mainly to higher SHBG and lower free androgens.
The authors say this themselves rather than burying it. Anyone reading a headline about coffee and hormones and wondering what it means for her is reading about somebody else's endocrine system.
What the Study Cannot Do

It is cross-sectional. Every participant was measured once, and that design identifies patterns without establishing cause. The authors state directly that longitudinal and intervention studies are needed before any of this informs dietary advice.
Reverse causation remains entirely plausible. People who train regularly drink more coffee, frequently on purpose and frequently before exercise. People carrying more muscle and less visceral fat tend to have a cluster of habits that arrive together. The researchers adjusted for physical activity, BMI, smoking, alcohol, and education, which is sound practice, and adjustment remains a blunt instrument next to observing what people actually do all day.
The comparison group is also unusually thin. Of the 2,264 participants, only 70 drank no coffee at all. Finland has among the highest per capita coffee consumption in the world, an excellent place to study heavy drinkers and a poor one to study abstainers.
Everyone in the cohort was Finnish, aged exactly 46, and mostly drinking filtered coffee. None of that describes an American drinking a large cold brew at her desk at two in the afternoon.
What the Findings Support
For anyone already drinking two or three cups a day, this is one more piece of reassurance in a long line of them. Coffee has held up remarkably well across decades of research into cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, and these results sit comfortably inside that picture rather than altering it.
For anyone who does not drink coffee, nothing here is a reason to start. What has been described is an association within a Finnish cohort, not a mechanism available for adoption.
And the phrase lower body fat is going to do a great deal of work in the coverage, so it is worth being plain. The study tested no intervention, measured nobody over time, and found no difference in BMI between the groups. Adding cups to change your body will mainly cost you sleep, and poor sleep does more measurable damage to metabolic health than coffee has ever been shown to repair.
Four hundred milligrams of caffeine daily, roughly four brewed cups, is the ceiling generally cited for healthy adults. Two hundred milligrams in pregnancy. Below that, the case for drinking it was always that mornings are difficult and coffee helps.
