Yoga offers a transformative journey toward balance and resilience as well as an overall sense of physical and mental balance.\n\nA topic that touches the lives of many women, known as menstrual discomfort, can cause imbalance and discomfort in our lives. However, yoga can become a gentle yet powerful guide in alleviating the _challenging symptoms of PMS_.\n\nMenstruation, a natural biological process experienced by people with a uterus, is often accompanied by a range of physical and emotional symptoms. These symptoms, commonly referred to as **menstrual discomfort**, can vary significantly in intensity and presentation from person to person. Some individuals may experience mild cramping and mood changes, while others may struggle with more severe pain, heavy bleeding, and debilitating fatigue.\n\n![yoga for pms](https://assets.workingal.com/yoga_for_pms_6f9a35b4f8.jpg)\n\nThe underlying causes of menstrual discomfort are complex and multifaceted, involving hormonal fluctuations, the release of prostaglandins (hormone-like substances that stimulate uterine contractions), and individual sensitivities. While some level of discomfort is considered normal, when symptoms become severe and interfere with daily life, it can significantly impact an individual's well-being and quality of life.\n\n## How menstrual discomfort can affect our everyday life\n\nFor many women, the monthly arrival of menstruation brings with it not only physical changes but also a range of **discomforts** that can significantly impact daily life. The effects extend beyond the realm of the physical, influencing emotions, productivity, and overall well-being.\n\n### Menstrual Cramps\n\nIntense cramps can make even the simplest daily tasks challenging. When we suffer from menstrual discomfort, even the most minor household chores become challenging, let alone our work responsibilities that are almost impossible to deal with due to pain and weakness throughout the day.\n\n### Fatigue and Low Energy\n\nMenstruation often brings fatigue and low energy levels, affecting productivity and making it harder to engage fully in daily activities.\n\n### Mood Swings\n\nHormonal fluctuations during menstruation can lead to mood swings, ranging from irritability to sadness. Managing these emotions becomes an additional aspect of daily life.\n\n### Stress and Anxiety\n\nCoping with both physical discomfort and emotional fluctuations can contribute to heightened stress and anxiety levels, influencing decision-making and our interpersonal relationships.\n\n### Reduced Productivity\n\nThe combination of physical discomfort and emotional variations can lead to reduced productivity at work and home, as we may need to take breaks or modify our routines to accommodate our well-being.\n\n### Absenteeism\n\nSevere menstrual symptoms can sometimes result in absenteeism from work or social activities, impacting professional commitments and social connections.\n\n### Social Interactions\n\nSocial plans and interactions may be influenced by the need for comfort and self-care during menstruation, leading to adjustments in social schedules.\n\n### Insomnia and Sleep Disruptions\n\nMenstrual discomfort, particularly pain and discomfort, can lead to insomnia or disruptions in [sleep patterns](https://www.workingal.com/articles/5-tips-to-sleep-better), impacting overall rest and recovery.\n\n## The role of yoga in alleviating menstruation symptoms\n\nDue to the fact that menstruation is something that happens every month and affects a significant number of women, it is essential to find ways to **bring balance within our body** and mind in order to deal with everyday stresses and responsibilities.\n\n![yoga for pms](https://assets.workingal.com/yoga_for_pms_f137441c8f.jpg)\n\nThe cause of menstrual discomfort and PMS is connected to changes in the hormonal cycle. According to research, various yoga therapy tools have a strong impact on the hormonal system. In yoga, we relate the hormones to different chakras in the body.\n\n### Chakras are energetical centers that correspond to clusters of nerve endings\n\nThey also relate to endocrine glands near each cluster. So, by activating and balancing the different chakras, we can also activate or balance our hormonal system. In case of hormonal imbalance, we will want to balance Ajna chakra, Sahasrara chakra, and Mooladhara chakra, and we will choose yoga asanas and pranayama that have this potential.\n\n### Soothing Asanas for balancing Mooladara and Ajna Chakra\n\nGentle and mild yoga poses, such as Child’s Pose (Balasana), Goddess Pose (Supta Baddha Konasana), and Supported Bridge Pose (Setu Bandha Sarvangasana), provide relief to tense muscles and ease lower back pain commonly associated with menstruation.\n\n### Balancing Pranayama for balancing the right and left brain\n\nBreathwork, like Deep Belly Breathing and Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing), aids in regulating emotions and reducing stress. These practices bring a sense of calm, creating an emotional sanctuary during this time.\n\n### Mindfulness Meditation for Mental Clarity\n\nMindfulness meditation becomes a powerful tool to navigate mood swings and mental fog when combined with proper breathing. By cultivating present-moment awareness, women can find mental clarity and emotional resilience.\n\n### Restorative Practices for Overall Comfort\n\nRestorative yoga poses, including Legs Up the Wall (Viparita Karani) and Corpse Pose (Savasana), promote deep relaxation, helping to alleviate fatigue and create a sense of overall comfort.\n\nEmbrace the practice of yoga to soothe menstrual discomfort. The gentle yet profound yoga therapy techniques can act as a balm, soothing the physical and emotional waves accompanying the monthly cycle.","yoga-menstrual-discomfort","period pain yoga, yoga poses for pms cramps, yoga to relieve period pain, period pain relief yoga, yoga for pms, ","Explore the potential of yoga for alleviating menstrual discomfort. The first step is to understand what exactly hyperpigmentation is.\n\nSimply put, hyperpigmentation is the umbrella term for skin conditions that cause patches of skin to _become darker than the surrounding areas_. This darkening occurs due to an **overproduction of melanin**, which gives our skin its color. While melanin is essential for protecting our skin from the sun's harmful UV rays, its overproduction can lead to unwanted dark spots, patches, and an uneven skin tone.\n\n## What Causes Hyperpigmentation?\n\n![how to deal with hyperpigmentation](https://assets.workingal.com/how_to_deal_with_hyperpigmentation_4ac271ff69.jpg)\n\nSeveral factors can trigger this excess melanin production, including:\n\n#### Sun Exposure\n\nUV radiation stimulates melanin production, and without proper sun protection, you're more likely to develop sunspots (also known as age spots or liver spots), melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.\n\n#### Hormonal Changes\n\nFluctuations in hormones, particularly [during pregnancy](https://www.workingal.com/articles/is-pregnancy-a-career-setback), menopause, or while taking certain medications (like birth control pills), can trigger melasma. Melasma often appears as symmetrical patches of hyperpigmentation on the cheeks, forehead, and upper lip.\n\n#### Inflammation\n\nAny kind of skin inflammation, whether from acne, eczema, psoriasis, or even injuries like cuts or burns, can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). PIH leaves behind dark marks after the initial inflammation subsides.\n\n#### Genetics & medical conditions\n\nSome individuals are genetically predisposed to hyperpigmentation. Also, in rare cases, certain medical conditions or medications can also contribute to hyperpigmentation.\n\n## How to recognize it\n\nIf you don’t know whether your skin shows signs of hyperpigmentation, then the following indications may reveal it:\n\n**Sunspots/Age Spots/Liver Spots:** These are small, flat, darkened spots that typically appear on sun-exposed areas like the face, hands, and chest. They're a common sign of aging and cumulative sun damage.\n\n**Melasma:** Melasma is characterized by larger, irregular patches of hyperpigmentation, often appearing on the face, and is often triggered by [hormonal changes](https://www.workingal.com/articles/6-hormonal-changes-that-affect-you-during-fall).\n\n**Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH):** Dark marks left behind after skin inflammation. These marks can range in color from pink or red to brown or black, depending on your skin tone.\n\n**Freckles:** While often considered charming and appealing, freckles are also a form of hyperpigmentation. They are small, concentrated spots of melanin that become more prominent with sun exposure.\n\n## How to treat hyperpigmentation\n\n![how to deal with hyperpigmentation](https://assets.workingal.com/how_to_deal_with_hyperpigmentation_dc1a48ee2b.jpg)\n\nThe good news is that hyperpigmentation can be treated. However, being patient and consistent is essential, as results take time. A combination of professional treatments and at-home skincare is often the most effective approach.\n\n**Chemical Peels:** These treatments exfoliate the top layers of skin, helping to lighten dark spots and improve overall skin tone.\n\n**Microdermabrasion:** This non-invasive procedure uses a diamond-tipped wand to gently remove dead skin cells, revealing brighter, more even-toned skin.\n\n**Laser Treatments:** Different types of lasers can target melanin directly, breaking it down and reducing the appearance of hyperpigmentation. Consult with a dermatologist to determine the best laser treatment for your specific needs.\n\n**Microneedling:** This procedure creates tiny punctures in the skin, stimulating collagen production and improving skin texture and tone. It can also be combined with topical serums to enhance their penetration and effectiveness.\n\n### A good skincare routine at home can do wonders for your skin and help manage hyperpigmentation. \nIf you show signs of hyperpigmentation, you should look for products that contain some key ingredients proven to combat skin decoloration and blemishes.\n\n**Hydroquinone:** A powerful skin-lightening agent, but should be used under the guidance of a dermatologist due to potential side effects. Lower concentrations are available over the counter, but it's still best to consult a professional.\n\n**Vitamin C:** A powerful antioxidant that helps brighten the skin and inhibit melanin production. Look for serums or creams containing a stable form of Vitamin C.\n\n**Niacinamide:** Another powerful ingredient that helps reduce inflammation, minimize pores, and even out skin tone.\n\n![how to deal with hyperpigmentation](https://assets.workingal.com/how_to_deal_with_hyperpigmentation_ac7ff6d616.jpg)\n\n**Retinoids:** These [vitamin A derivatives](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-to-use-retinol-on-your-skin-for-best-results) promote cell turnover, helping to shed pigmented skin cells and reveal brighter skin underneath. Start with a low concentration and gradually increase as tolerated.\n\n**Kojic Acid:** Derived from mushrooms, kojic acid helps inhibit melanin production and lighten dark spots.\n\n**Azelaic Acid:** This naturally occurring acid helps reduce inflammation and brighten the skin. It's particularly helpful for those with acne-prone skin.\n\nThe products below are proven to assist in hyperpigmentation treatment.\n\n[**SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic**](https://www.dermstore.com/p/skinceuticals-c-e-ferulic-with-15-l-ascorbic-acid-vitamin-c-serum-30ml/11289609/?affil=thgppc&kwds=&thg_ppc_campaign=20677822772&adtype=pla_with_promotion&product_id=11289609&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAn9a9BhBtEiwAbKg6fiBdOICe7pg0dc21yOBN1m0STAagIGrlWOCooDuHS_HT81KV02NxCRoCrugQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds)**:** A cult-favorite Vitamin C serum that provides powerful antioxidant protection and brightens the skin.\n\n[**Obagi Nu-Derm System:**](https://www.obagi.com/collections/systems?isource=google&imedium=search&icampaignid=21643899998&iadgroupid=166707361876&iadid=711591867482&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAn9a9BhBtEiwAbKg6flogqMle4JnctxeVK1wvxTrJaZiG3IkDtKMHqGZfdTSeWfWHhyXDwRoC8WsQAvD_BwE) A comprehensive system designed to address hyperpigmentation and other signs of aging. This practice, deeply rooted in chronobiology, has been shown to improve sleep quality, boost **endorphin** production, and potentially extend lifespan.\n\nThis practice, which has deep roots in chronobiology, has been shown to improve [sleep quality](https://www.workingal.com/articles/5-reasons-why-good-sleep-is-important-for-your-physical-and-mental-health), enhance endorphin production, and potentially prolong **life expectancy**.\n\nThe study's findings are coordinated with the lifestyle of some cultures known for **longevity**, such as the Japanese. In Japan, people often adjust their waking up time every season to match the hours of the day. During the winter months, waking up at 7 am is usual, while during the summer months, they wake up earlier, between 5 and 6 am. This flexibility allows them to maximize exposure to natural light, which is vital to regulating our **circadian rhythm** and preserving a youthful appearance and vitality. This way, we can prepare ourselves for a day full of energy and positivity.\n\n## Utilizing the morning for personal development\n\n![wake up early in the morning](https://assets.workingal.com/wake_up_early_in_the_morning_ed4219552e.jpg)\n\nThose who wake up early often have extra time to engage in activities that promote **well-being** and [success](https://www.workingal.com/articles/habits-of-successful-women). Many people who consistently reach their goals attribute their success to their morning habits.\n\nIn Japan, it is common for people to include mild and mindful practices in their morning routine. [Yoga, meditation](https://www.workingal.com/articles/5-yoga-poses-for-immediate-stress-relief), and reading are popular options that help cultivate a sense of stillness and [concentration](https://www.workingal.com/articles/7-ways-to-improve-concentration-in-everything-you-do) before they start their busy and demanding day. These activities promote mental clarity, contribute to emotional balance, and [reduce stress](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-to-reduce-stress-naturally). By waking up earlier, we create a sense of calmness before the bustle of everyday life begins.\n\n# The power of segmented sleep and rest strategy\n\nInterestingly, the concept of stable eight-hour sleep is relatively modern. Historical evidence and current practices in some cultures suggest that segmental sleep patterns can be beneficial. In her book [“Le Sommeil Retrouvé,” sleep expert Caroline Rome](https://www.fnac.com/a20672910/Caroline-Rome-Le-sommeil-retrouve-tout-se-joue-sur-24-heures) analyses the Japanese approach to fractional sleep. The book emphasizes that good sleep starts with a mindful **24-hour approach**, not just the hours before bed. Rome offers a holistic method combining sophrology techniques with lifestyle advice.\n\nThis method includes sleeping from around 9 am to midnight, waking up for a period of relaxation or meditation, and then going back to sleep from 2 am to 5 am. Despite the total sleep time of about six hours, practitioners report feeling refreshed and maintaining steady energy levels throughout the day.\n\n### The idea of rest strategy extends beyond night sleep. \n\nThe Japanese practice of _“Inemuri,”_ or “sleep while we are present,” involves short periods of sleep during the day.\n\nUnlike some Western cultures, where sleep can be considered sluggish, in Japan, it is often considered a sign of labor —proof that someone has worked to exhaustion. For instance, some progressive-minded companies in Japan have even made **sleep compulsory**, recognizing its potential to boost [workers’ productivity](https://www.workingal.com/articles/strategic-productivity-how-to-work-smart-not-hard) and well-being.\n\n![wake up early in the morning](https://assets.workingal.com/wake_up_early_in_the_morning_5ae0ebe9fa.jpg)\n\nThis approach is in line with research that shows that short periods of sleep can boost [cognitive function](https://www.workingal.com/articles/7-ways-to-improve-concentration-in-everything-you-do) and creativity, making it a valuable tool for those who wish to develop the habits of highly successful individuals.\n\n## Adjust the awakening routine for happiness and success\n\nAlthough the ideal wake-up time may vary depending on individual conditions and geographic location, the principle of alignment with the natural light cycles remains constant. For those who want to optimize their mornings for greater happiness and success, gradual adjustment to early waking hours can be beneficial.\n\nStart by setting your alarm **15 minutes earlier** than usual, and use this time for a positive morning ritual. As you get used to this new routine, you may see yourself waking up naturally earlier and feeling more active and energized.\n\n## The quality of sleep is just as crucial as the wake-up time\n\nEstablishing a soothing bedtime routine and creating a sleep-friendly environment can significantly improve the quality of rest. Limiting screen time before bedtime, keeping the bedroom dark and in average temperature and avoiding heavy meals late at night are strategies that can [improve sleep effectiveness](https://www.workingal.com/articles/5-tips-to-sleep-better).\n\nBy prioritizing both the [wake-up time](https://www.workingal.com/articles/productivity-diaries-i-started-to-wake-up-at-6-am-and-good-things-have-happened) and the quality of our sleep, we create the conditions for days full of greater productivity, creativity, and overall satisfaction from life. And we probably come to a common conclusion: you have to find time in your day to fit at least half an hour of exercise in.\n\nAnd here comes a tip: Try adding a few extra activities throughout the day and week to keep your body moving. Just a few extra minutes of movement is all it takes, for starters.\n\n### Here are 9 ways to get more exercise during the day.\n\n![how to walk more](https://assets.workingal.com/how_to_walk_more_551372ada1.jpg)\n\n## 1. Take the stairs\nYeah, I know, could it BE more cliché advice? (channeling my inner Chandler right now). Taking the stairs is probably one of the top 3 recommendations regarding physical activity and I’m pretty sure you've heard it a thousand times. However, using the stairs instead of the elevator improves your **heart rate**, can assist you in practicing balance, and builds lower limb strength. And really, how much time would you save in the elevator? 2-3? Your body will thank you within a month. Don’t forget to stretch your feet on the last step! \n\n## 2. Suggest a walk meeting\nIf you work from home and have scheduled calls, go for a walk while taking a couple of those. This means, though, that you don’t need your **laptop for the call**; if not, put your headphones on, set up the noise cancellation (unless you live in a quiet area), and enjoy your meeting. This is almost a genius way to incorporate some minutes of walking into your daily routine without stressing that you won’t have time to do the job; on the plus, it also serves as a **great way** if you need a change of scenery. Do the same at the office; invite your colleagues to meet while walking. A walk will strengthen team bonding and perhaps inspire you all to get creative. \n\n## 3. Walk to errands\nWhile it’s always time efficient and easy to do an Instacart and get over with it, why not try and walk to the grocery store or grab your medicine? Grab a cart, go around the aisles, research the products, and choose vegetables. _And who knows?_ Apart from walking, you may discover new products for a new recipe. Also, try to do quick errands without taking your car. \n\n## 4. Park a little further away\n\n![how to walk more](https://assets.workingal.com/how_to_walk_more_c306632756.jpg)\n\nIf you use your car and you are not willing to give up on it, then park a little further away, no matter where you are. The bliss of **parking right outside your destination** is huge but doesn’t favor our physical activity goals. So next time you are out, and if you're in a safe and well-lit area, consider parking a little further away from your destination. You will accumulate some walking minutes.\n\n## 5. Exercise or stretching while watching TV\n\nWell, when we are big fans of _“Netflix and chill”_, and this goes far beyond it, but if it makes us healthier, it’s worth it. While watching TV, walk on the treadmill, stretch, grab your dumbells to strengthen your arms, or do **Pilates** during the episode. You don’t need to sweat; even a few reps of some exercises will make a difference in your strength, posture, and flexibility.\n\n## 6. Dance\nDancing is a great aerobic workout that can improve your heart health, lower blood pressure, and increase lung capacity. Not to mention what it does to your **mental health**. It is also a great way to burn calories and improve your balance and rhythm. Put on headphones, pick your favorite playlist, and start exploring your **inner dancer**. You can also do it while cleaning or cooking to make it even more fun. Plus, you can do it as a game or competition with your family or friends.\n\n## 7. Organize a games night\nSwap cards or board games for games that require more energy. Hide and seek, treasure hunt, Twister, freeze dance, VR, musical chairs, jump rope, and even mime. While UNO and Monopoly are at the **top of our list**, sometimes we need to shake this body!\n\n![how to walk more](https://assets.workingal.com/how_to_walk_more_a68e1afafb.jpg)\n\n## 8. Go for walking drinks\nIf you feel like socializing but are bored going for drinks again, why not get your drink and walk? Walking drinks combine **socializing with a gentle stroll**, making it a more active and engaging way to catch up with friends or family. Remember that the concept is not about getting intoxicated while walking. It's about [enjoying a beverage](https://www.workingal.com/articles/15-fall-beverages-to-warm-your-soul) (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) while taking a leisurely walk, usually in a pleasant setting. \n\n## 9. Have more sex\nSex is a physical activity that involves movement, increased heart rate, and muscle engagement, all of which contribute to burning calories. According to research, sex burns about _3.1 calories per minute for women and about 4.2 calories for men_. So, while it's not the same as a vigorous run, you can (definitely) sweat during sex and benefit in all sorts of ways.","9-ways-to-walk-a-bit-more-every-day","how to walk more, tips to walk more, how to make more steps, more walking, better walking","If you have a pedometer or fitness tracker, you probably know that experts recommend walking up to 10,000 steps a day. There are thousands of products at our disposal, and every day, we are overwhelmed by a storm of advice and new trends that show up on our TikTok or Instagram feed. However, not everyone is a beauty guru, and not all advice and beauty tips we read, see, and listen to are truthful —or effective. Therefore, to maintain effective and safe skincare we need to understand some essential truths that can help us save time, money, and trouble. This way, we can make the most out of our skincare and have the best results. So, we gathered 5 truths about your skincare that will help you make more informed decisions and make the most out of your products and routine.\n\nIdentifying your skin type\n--------------------------\n\n![5 truths about our skincare routine](https://assets.workingal.com/5_truths_about_our_skincare_routine_0e8e778b9b.jpg)\n\nBefore buying any skincare product you saw on a social media ad, you need to recognize and identify your skin type. _Do you have oily, dry, mixed, or sensitive skin?_ Making the right choice of skincare products is based on understanding your skin's **needs**, and you shouldn’t try on products that are not suitable for your skin type. You won’t have any results, and this can potentially cause more. If you are not sure, it’s better to consult a dermatologist who can help you identify your skin type and recommend the type of products your skin needs.\n\nSPF is for all year round\n-------------------------\n\nIf you use sunscreen only during summer, you need to rethink. UV radiation can cause permanent damage to the skin and accelerate the aging process. UV radiation can also impact our skin even when the weather is cloudy and overcast —aka during fall and winter. Therefore, daily sun protection is the most critical **step** in your [morning routine](https://www.workingal.com/articles/this-is-your-morning-beauty-routine-checklist), as it prevents the formation of wrinkles, pimples, and other damage from sunlight.\n\nExpensive doesn’t mean the best\n-------------------------------\n\nYou don’t have to spend a fortune to have healthy and bright skin. In many cases, high-end products are not necessarily more effective than the most affordable ones. Sometimes, all you need is an over-the-counter [affordable moisturizer](https://www.workingal.com/articles/the-best-moisturizers-of-2024-and-2025) that works wonders with your skin. This is because the fundamental importance lies in the needs of your skin and how the **product** responds to them. Proper skin cleansing, hydration, and sun protection are the most basic and effective steps for healthy skin, and they don’t have to be extravagantly expensive in order to be effective.\n\nExcessive care can damage the skin\n----------------------------------\n\n![5 truths about our skincare routine](https://assets.workingal.com/5_truths_about_our_skincare_routine_d36276445d.jpg)\n\nThe most common trap in skin care is excess. Using more products does not always **guarantee** better results. In fact, excessive cleaning, exfoliating, or anti-aging products can irritate the skin and cause [sensitivity, dryness, or even pimples](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-to-treat-our-face-skin-during-winter-and-cold). Stick to specific products and stay with them for some time without “enhancing” your routine with new ones. Most ingredients need about 2-3 months to show results, and by [mixing a lot of ingredients](https://www.workingal.com/articles/skincare-routine-do-you-know-how-to-safely-mix-ingredients) may end up damaging your skin.\n\nFeeding and sleep play a key role\n---------------------------------\n\nA balanced nutrition and quality sleep are just as crucial to your skin health as the products you use. Consuming foods rich in antioxidants can enhance the texture and appearance of the skin. Adequate and quality sleep, apart from its [benefits for our physical and mental health](https://www.workingal.com/articles/5-reasons-why-good-sleep-is-important-for-your-physical-and-mental-health), allows the skin to rejuvenate and restore its natural balance. As its name suggests, its main idea lies in limiting food intake to specific intervals during the day. Intermittent fasting is a dietary pattern that focuses on when you eat and not what you eat. \n\nThere are several types of intermittent fasting, but most approaches alternate between periods of eating and non-eating or fasting. Some methods suggest fasting for a set **number of hours**, while others extend fasting to a full day several times a week. However, women and men show different tolerance to intermittent fasting.\n\nWhy is intermittent fasting different for women and men?\n--------------------------------------------------------\n\nIntermittent fasting affects men and women differently. There are potential risks that women should consider regarding reproductive health, bone health, and general well-being.\n\n![intermittent fasting for women](https://assets.workingal.com/intermittent_fasting_for_women_0505452770.jpg)\n\nAlthough you can eat normally during periods when you are not fasting, some forms of intermittent fasting can reduce your calorie intake. Calories provide your body with energy; when there is a shortage of energy, the body will focus on survival over other functions.\n\nResearch with women as participants is **currently limited**, but some studies involving rodents suggest that intermittent fasting can cause changes in estrogen levels and negatively affect reproductive functions such as menstrual regularity, fertility, pregnancy, and lactation. Male rodent hormone levels are also affected, but the disorders do not seem to change their _reproductive functions_ as they change in female rodents. A possible reason for this is that certain aspects of reproduction in women -including pregnancy and breastfeeding- require more **energy** than those in men. Thus, these functions can be negatively affected if the energy intake is too low. However, it is not clear at this time whether women are affected in the same way that female rodents are affected.\n\nWhat are the risks for women?\n-----------------------------\n\nAn increasing volume of research suggests that limiting calorie intake can also reduce **bone density**. However, according to a recent review of studies, intermittent fasting does not appear to affect the density of the minerals in your bones in the same way as low-calorie diets. However, most of these studies are not extensive, so more research is required for safe results.\n\nOther possible side effects of intermittent fasting include:\n\n* Headaches\n \n* Fatigue\n \n* Constipation\n \n* Overconsumption of food in non-fasting periods\n \n\nWhen women should avoid intermittent fasting\n\nAlthough intermittent fasting has potential benefits, some women should avoid it unless approved by their physician. If you are thinking of starting intermittent fasting as a diet plane, you should definitely consult your physician or nutritionist if you are included in the following categories:\n\n**Pregnancy or breastfeeding:** Intermittent fasting is generally not recommended for pregnant women as it can affect the development of the baby and cause other adverse side effects\n\n**Diabetes:** Fasting may increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).\n\n**Specific medication:** Some medications should be taken with food, therefore, prolonged fasting could affect scheduled doses.\n\nAlso, if you suffer from an existing medical condition or a history of malnutrition, talk to your physician before starting any diet or diet plan.\n\nAlso, it’s worth pointing out that women may need to follow a different approach to intermittent fasting than men in order to manage potential health risks. \n\n#### Small, gradual changes over several months, rather than drastic changes in a short period of time, could help reduce undesirable side effects.\n\nThere is no method of fasting that is better than any other. As with most diets, intermittent fasting has to do with what suits everyone and their nutritional goals. In general, however, women prefer a more flexible fasting approach than men. In particular:\n\n**Gradually increasing fasting time:** We initially fast for 12 hours and gradually increase the interval to 16 hours. We fast 2 to 3 times a week but for non-consecutive days. Each day of fasting should be equally distant from the previous one (e.g., Monday, Wednesday, Friday)\n\n![intermittent fasting for women](https://assets.workingal.com/intermittent_fasting_for_women_5c05b5b777.jpg)\n\n**Eat-stop-eat (24-hour protocol):** A complete 24-hour fast 1-2 times (maximum for women) per week. It would be advisable to start with 12 and gradually reach up to 16 hours of fasting for smoother and milder adjustments.\n\n**The 5:2 diet (also called the fasting diet):** Instead of not eating at all for a while, we limit calories to 25% of what we usually consume (~500 calories per day). We follow it for 2 non-consecutive days a week. For the rest of the days, we eat as per usual.\n\n**Method of every 2nd day:** Fasting every 2nd day, eating 20-25% of the total calories we typically consume (about 500 calories) on the day of fasting. In the 10 days of 5, we will have consumed about 500 calories.\n\n**The 16/8 method:** We fast for 16 consecutive hours and then eat all our meals within 8 consecutive hours. Women can initially start fasting for 14 hours and gradually increase it to 16 hours.","what-should-women-know-about-intermittent-fasting","intermittent fasting, fasting for weight loss, intermittent fasting for women, intermediate fasting schedule, ","Intermittent fasting can be beneficial, but it's important for women to understand the potential effects. As a nutritionist, I work with people who are trying to regulate their weight, but many times, they don't see the expected result asking me, _“Why I don’t lose weight?”_ or _“I barely eat, why I don’t lose weight?”_ If you feel this way and you don’t see results despite your weight loss effort, maybe you have fallen into the trap. This is often due to some mistakes we make without realizing it. Let's see together what the five most common reasons that hinder your weight loss are and what we can do to avoid them in order to achieve our weight loss goals.\n\n## 1. Excessive focus on calorie count\n\n![why I don't lose weight](https://assets.workingal.com/why_I_don_t_lose_weight_a44a77fd3c.jpg)\n\nMany people believe that weight loss is simply a matter of calories. That is, there is a general perception that if we eat fewer calories than we burn, then we automatically lose weight. However, the **quality of calories** is just as important. For example, 100 calories from an apple are not the same as 100 calories from a dessert. In addition to making us feel satiety, apples also provide us with many nutrients. On the contrary, while sweets will seemingly satisfy our hunger, in reality, they don’t fill us up, and we soon feel hungry again, while at the same time, they burden us with empty calories without providing us with any nutrients.\n\n### What should I do:\n\nIn cases of weight loss, while it is important to control the calories we consume in relation to those we burn, we should make sure to choose foods rich in nutrients, such as _fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins_. We also shouldn’t be afraid of \"good\" fats, such as those found in avocado, nuts, and olive oil. In addition, we limit the consumption of processed foods, sugar, and foods that provide us with \"empty\" calories without any particular nutrient.\n\n## 2. Skipping meals\n\n![why I don't lose weight](https://assets.workingal.com/why_I_don_t_lose_weight_3658b20b13.jpg)\n\nMany people believe that if they skip meals, they will lose weight faster. However, this is wrong. When we skip meals, our body goes into _\"survival mode\"_ and slows down our metabolism—the opposite of what we want. Furthermore, when we are very hungry, we are more likely to eat more than usual at the next meal, ending up not eating anything during the day and consuming excessive food at dinner.\n\n### What should I do:\n\nIn order to take care of our metabolism and blood sugar levels, it is important to have regular meals and snacks _every 3-4 hours_. We listen to our body and don't let it reach a state of excessive hunger because we will have the opposite results. In case we are away from home and it is not easy to have food available, [some snacks that we can carry with us](https://www.workingal.com/articles/these-are-the-snacks-that-won-t-ruin-your-diet), such as a cereal bar or some fruit and nuts, can help us manage our hunger until the next meal.\n\n## 3. Lack of sleep\n\n![why I don't lose weight](https://assets.workingal.com/why_I_don_t_lose_weight_70fa99d55c.jpg)\n\nSleep is an essential part of our weight loss effort. When we don't get enough sleep or when we don't get [quality sleep](https://www.workingal.com/articles/5-reasons-why-good-sleep-is-important-for-your-physical-and-mental-health) every day, our body produces more **cortisol**, a hormone that increases appetite and contributes to fat storage in our body. Additionally, lack of sleep can make us feel **tired** and drain our desire to exercise, which makes the _calorie-burning process_ more challenging.\n\n### What should I do:\n\nFor adults, we make sure to get [7-8 hours of quality sleep](https://www.workingal.com/articles/5-tips-to-sleep-better) every night. In order to enjoy our sleep and rest as much as possible, we create a relaxing environment in our bedroom: dark, quiet, and at a normal temperature, neither too cold nor too hot. Additionally, to avoid disrupting our sleep routine, we avoid [caffeine](https://www.workingal.com/articles/is-caffeine-good-for-our-health) and alcohol before bed.\n\n## 4. Stress\n\n![why I don't lose weight](https://assets.workingal.com/why_I_don_t_lose_weight_a5d4272201.jpg)\n\nStress is another factor that can make it difficult to lose weight, as when we are stressed, our body also [produces cortisol](https://www.workingal.com/articles/what-is-cortisol-detox-and-how-to-do-it), which can make us eat more and store fat. For example, when stressed at work or about a personal matter, it is common to prefer _unhealthy snack options_ that fill us with extra calories. Additionally, stress can make us feel tired and not move enough.\n\n### What should I do:\n\nYoga, meditation, and exercise are excellent ways to avoid unnecessary [anxiety and stress](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-to-reduce-stress-naturally) and [boost our mood](https://www.workingal.com/articles/16-ways-to-boost-your-mood-instantly), and reduce our need for unhealthy food choices. If anxiety is intense and makes our daily lives difficult, then we may need to talk to a specialist.\n\n## 5. Lack of patience\n\n![why I don't lose weight](https://assets.workingal.com/why_I_don_t_lose_weight_1f39c7c0a9.jpg)\n\nOur desire to lose weight is so great that we often become impatient. Weight loss is a process that requires _time and patience_. Unfortunately, many people get frustrated when they don't see results right away and give up. However, persistence and the willingness to invest in our body and health are the keys to success.\n\n### What should I do:\n\nWhen we are in the process of losing weight, it is good to [set realistic goals](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-to-set-smart-financial-goals) regarding weight loss. For example, if we want to lose 15 pounds, wanting to lose it in one month is not a realistic goal; on the contrary, it can be risky for our overall health. Understanding and collaborating with our nutritionist can help us set a healthy and realistic **weight-loss diet plan** based on our goals. Furthermore, we should avoid comparing ourselves to others and focus on healthy eating and exercise, and the results we hope for will come over time.\n\n","a-nutritionist-explains-the-5-reasons-that-stop-you-from-losing-weight","why don t diets work, why am i not losing weight when i work out, reasons I don't lose weight, why am i fat when i don t eat much,i don t eat much why am i fat, ","Struggling to lose weight? Our society is heavily influenced by the _“immediate results”_ motto, and for this reason, we often look towards the latest trends and supplements in this effort for a potential edge. One of the latest trends around weight loss is prebiotics. Prebiotics, a type of non-digestible fiber, have gained attention for their potential role in gut health. But can these beneficial fibers actually help you shed those extra pounds? The answer is more complex than you expect. \n\nWhat are Prebiotics?\n--------------------\n\n![prebiotics for weight loss](https://assets.workingal.com/prebiotics_for_weight_loss_9edf7bda0f.jpg)\n\nTo begin with, it’s important to clarify that prebiotics are different from **probiotics**. Probiotics are the live, beneficial bacteria that reside in our gut, while prebiotics are the _\"food\"_ that nourishes these bacteria. We can find prebiotics in various foods like _onions, garlic, bananas, asparagus, and whole grains,_ and when we consume prebiotics, they travel undigested to the large intestine, where they ferment and promote the growth of beneficial bacteria. Both probiotics and prebiotics are essential for our body and our gut’s proper functioning.\n\n### The Gut-Weight Connection\n\nThe [gut microbiome](https://www.workingal.com/articles/microbiome-what-does-your-gut-tell-you), the complex community of microorganisms living in our digestive tract, plays a significant role in various aspects of health, including _digestion, immunity, and even metabolism_. An imbalance in gut bacteria, known as dysbiosis, has been linked to obesity and metabolic disorders. And this is where prebiotics come in. \n\nHow Prebiotics Might Influence Weight:\n--------------------------------------\n\n![prebiotics for weight loss](https://assets.workingal.com/prebiotics_for_weight_loss_0990976767.jpg)\n\n* **Increased Satiety:** Prebiotics can promote the growth of bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), like butyrate. SCFAs can signal the brain that you're full, potentially reducing appetite and calorie intake. \n \n* **Improved Insulin Sensitivity:** Some studies suggest that prebiotics can improve insulin sensitivity, which is crucial for regulating blood sugar levels and preventing fat storage. \n \n* **Reduced Inflammation:** Chronic inflammation is associated with obesity. Prebiotics may help reduce inflammation in the gut and throughout the body, potentially contributing to weight management. \n \n* **Altered Gut Microbiome Composition:** By stimulating the growth of beneficial bacteria, prebiotics can help create a more diverse and balanced gut microbiome, which is linked to better metabolic health. \n \n\nThe evidence: what does the research say?\n-----------------------------------------\n\nWhile the mechanisms by which prebiotics might influence weight are promising, the _research is still evolving_. Some studies have shown that **prebiotic supplementation** can lead to modest weight loss or reduced body fat, while others have found no significant effect. It's important to note that many of these studies are small, and more research is needed to confirm these findings.\n\n### Incorporating prebiotics into your diet\n\n![high protein diet](https://assets.workingal.com/high_protein_diet_42a24174b7.jpg)\n\nRather than relying solely on prebiotic supplements, focus on incorporating prebiotic-rich foods into your daily diet. These whole foods offer a wealth of other nutrients in addition to prebiotics. Here are some good sources: \n\n* **Fruits:** Bananas (especially slightly green ones), apples, berries \n* **Vegetables:** Onions, garlic, leeks, asparagus, artichokes, chicory root \n* **Grains:** Oats, barley, whole wheat \n* **Legumes:** Beans, lentils \n \n\n**What to keep in mind**\n\n* **Individual Variability:** Everyone's gut microbiome is unique, so the effects of prebiotics can vary from person to person. \n* **Gradual Introduction:** Introducing prebiotics too quickly can cause gas and bloating. Start with small amounts and gradually increase your intake. \n* **Balanced Diet:** Prebiotics are just one piece of the puzzle. For healthy weight management, following a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and prioritizing overall healthy lifestyle habits is crucial.\n \n\nWhile prebiotics demonstrate promise for supporting gut health and potentially influencing weight management, they are not a magic spell for weight loss; therefore, more research is needed to understand their role fully.","are-prebiotics-the-solution-to-weight-loss","prebiotics for weight loss, prebiotics and probiotics, are prebiotics good for weight loss, how prebiotics help with weight loss","One of the latest nutrition trends suggests that prebiotics can help with weight loss?
