So, what?","### _Many thanks to the Digital Marketing Agency, EDL Services, for their useful insights in writing this article._\n\n***\n\nThe future of the most popular social media platform, TikTok, seems ominous, considering it’s a matter of days before it’s completely banned from the US. The Supreme Court is heading towards banning the platform from the country unless its China-based owner, ByteDance, doesn't sell off its U.S. operation by Jan. 19.\n\nThe argument behind this decision is based primarily on national security concerns, given that TikTok collects vast amounts of user data, including browsing history, location data, and potentially sensitive personal information that could be handed to the Chinese government with all the consequences that entails. \n\nAnd the consequences can be harmful to the US. According to the [National Intelligence Law of 2017](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Intelligence_Law_of_the_People's_Republic_of_China), companies are required to _\"support, assist, and cooperate\"_ with the Chinese national intelligence work; hence, the companies can be forced to share their data with the Chinese government. This broad phrasing raises concerns that ByteDance could be legally obligated to provide user data to Chinese authorities upon request. This data could potentially be used to identify individuals, track their movements, and monitor their online activities and could also lead to censorship and manipulation by using TikTok's algorithm to control the flow of information to US users, promote favorable to the Chinese government interests and be a tool for propaganda and disinformation within the US.\n\n### And these reasons are highly legitimate and make total sense. So, what’s the big deal, one could argue. \n\nWell, the answer is not so simple considering that TikTok represents a significant portion of the US population, with over 170 million monthly active users in the US. Americans love TikTok, and the statistics prove that. According to [Backlinko](https://backlinko.com/tiktok-users), US adult users spend an average of 53.8 minutes per day on TikTok, and the number keeps growing, considering that [between 2021 and 2023](https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/fact-sheet/social-media/), the share of U.S. adults saying they use it rose from 21% to 33%.\n\n![tiktok icon](https://assets.workingal.com/tiktok_ban_2025_3dc7ce3c36.jpg)\n\nIn simple words, TikTok is one of the most popular platforms in the US, used not only for entertainment purposes but also for business. That translates to a substantial amount of contribution to the US economy. According to [Oxford Economics reports](https://www.oxfordeconomics.com/resource/tiktok-us/#:~:text=Via) these channels, our economic,2023, while supporting 224,000 jobs.) _SMB activity on TikTok contributed $24.2bn to GDP in the US in 2023, while supporting 224,000 jobs._ With nearly 5 million American businesses having a presence on the app, the adoption of TikTok as a business tool is widespread by businesses of all sizes.\n\nNot to mention the many creators and influencers monetizing their content on the platform. TikTok has offered a unique opportunity for people who like making videos to make money from it—a lot of money in many cases. Influencers prefer TikTok because it generally has higher engagement rates than other platforms. This makes them highly valuable for brands since they shape trends and drive consumer behavior in the US. So, a potential ban could severely harm creators who rely on the platform for income and livelihood, and they could face significant challenges. Businesses as well that utilize TikTok for **advertising and marketing** would need to find alternative platforms, potentially at higher costs which could impact their income and marketing allocation. Given that TikTok is a significant platform for e-commerce activities, a ban could disrupt sales and marketing efforts for businesses reliant on this channel.\n\nBanning TikTok does not only affect users and businesses; this ban could set a precedent for the US government to ban other foreign-owned technology companies, raising concerns about free trade and competition and potentially acting as an obstacle for investments in such platforms in the future, having a significant impact on innovation.\n\nAnd let’s not neglect the fact that TikTok is a means of entertainment for many, and its absence would diminish entertainment options, disrupt social connections, and alter the landscape of online culture. User behavior and social interactions could undergo significant changes.\n\n\n>_According to the_ [Pew Research Center](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2024/12/20/8-facts-about-americans-and-tiktok/#:~:text=Public) _,public opinion regarding a government ban on TikTok has shifted, and people are less likely to favor a government ban on TikTok now._ \n\nThe Bright Side\n---------------\n\n![tiktok ban 2025](https://assets.workingal.com/tiktok_ban_2025_9645342894.jpg)\n\nWhile the economic and social impact of a potential TikTok ban could really harm the financial status of many and disrupt the balance among many businesses, marketing, and PR teams, it clearly has positive aspects, in case this happens.\n\nApart from the national security issues, which are undoubtedly substantial, a ban could potentially lead to increased awareness and focus on [data privacy and security](https://www.edl.gr/blog/data-privacy-and-marketing) among users; this might be a chance for them to understand the importance of data security and the consequences, both in an individual as well as national level when those are compromised. It could also encourage the development of alternative social media platforms with stronger privacy protections and data security measures and enable the existing platforms to pay more attention to security matters.  \n\nSocial media, in general, and TikTok as well have been widely scolded for promoting unhealthy behaviors, patterns, and body image issues, and it has been associated with mental health concerns around the world. Maybe one less source of such matters could help eliminate the dangers of social media —or mitigate it to the other platforms. \n\nNobody knows what could actually happen in a few days; however, no matter the result, we sure live in a fast-paced and very innovative world and both the government and businesses, along with their marketing teams, will find a way to continue producing significant results and keep the users interested.","tik-tok-may-be-banned-so-what",3,"TikTok may Be Banned. Motherhood, as incredible and desired as it is for many women, can turn into a nightmare for many because of their employment status and career aspirations. \n\nWomen often turn to competent bodies to **demand the obvious**, aka, to have rights at work as working mothers, or rather, to take it from the beginning, not to be laid off when pregnancy comes. Unfortunately, it is common for women to be laid off because of their pregnancy or after the birth of their child. It is also more common to face difficulties in their research for a job, especially when they are in their reproductive years, considering that employers often avoid hiring women for fear of them getting pregnant. \n\nThe _Pregnancy Discrimination Act_, a federal law of 1978, prohibits employment discrimination based on pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions in the US, and the European Union (EU) has several laws that protect pregnant workers and new mothers, including the Pregnant Workers Directive and the Work-life Balance Directive. However, [data shows](https://bipartisanpolicy.org/blog/bpc-morning-consult-pregnancy-discrimination/) that 1 in 5 mothers report experiencing **pregnancy discrimination** in the workplace.   \n\nThe problem is more prevalent in the private sector, even in large multinational corporations, where women are —illegally— required to state before they are hired that they will not become pregnant, or if they do, they will voluntarily resign. Another tactic several businesses use is forcing them to resign as soon as they announce their pregnancy. _In extreme cases, employers still propose abortion as a \"solution.\"_ Scary, right? Social media is full of terrifying stories of women who got pregnant, and they had to face such behaviors, even though the legislation prohibits them.\n\nAlso, a significant number of employers, in order not to break the law and face the legal consequences, find excuses to terminate pregnant women, justifying the termination with poor performance or simply by eliminating their role in the company. A loophole that many employers use and refrains women from claiming their rights.\n\n![pregnancy at work](https://assets.workingal.com/pregnancy_at_work_cb7db8960f.jpg)\n\nCountries worldwide have taken measures to strengthen motherhood, and some laws aim to protect working mothers. However, the problem is not on paper since many irregularities and iniquities happen —_and women can’t always fight back_. One would expect that the problem could be easily solved with an attorney. However, many women are scared of confronting such cases for fear of being targeted for acting in bad faith, hence making it challenging to get another job or because they don’t have the financial means to do so.\n\nGiven the circumstances, the announcement of their pregnancy creates an enormous amount of stress for pregnant women, as they fear that their pregnancy will compromise their career, and given that a baby comes with a lot of extra expenses, they dread not being able to go back to work as soon as they are able. Consequently, pregnancy becomes a source of stress rather than a source of happiness. \n\nAs a result, many women put their family planning on hold for fear of destroying their careers and ending up unemployed. _And who can blame them?_ [Studies](https://www.aauw.org/issues/equity/motherhood/) have shown that on average, mothers earn less than childless women with similar qualifications or they are less likely to be promoted or receive raises. And let’s not forget that there can be unconscious biases against mothers, with assumptions that they are less committed or competent, depriving them of their right to a fulfilling career.\n\nAnd, the truth is that many countries lack sufficient support systems for working parents, such as affordable childcare, flexible work arrangements, and paid parental leave, which makes it even more difficult for mothers to be able to focus on their careers without neglecting their children.\n\n**The Other Side**\n------------------\n\n![pregnancy at work](https://assets.workingal.com/pregnancy_at_work_29066f1435.jpg)\n\nThere is a lot of debate from both sides as to how pregnancy affects both parties —the mother and the employer. Let's look at the arguments of the other side. \n\nEmployers argue that it is financially suffocating to pay someone who is not providing any service for such a long time. Also, in the event that they need to hire someone to cover for the pregnant woman, it will be **challenging** to hire a new person for a specific amount of time and who will probably be terminated after the woman returns to work. And it will still be financially unbearable. At the same time, the woman, who has been away for a long time, would need time to adjust and adapt to work and follow the business's pace, especially when discussing rapidly evolving environments.\n\nI could judge these arguments harshly since they seem ridiculous often, given that we are talking about a legal framework that includes the labor rights of all workers. However, I will leave the possibility that some small businesses may struggle to keep up with such costs. Times are tough, so it’s not easy to blame **small businesses** that don’t have the financial luxury to hire more employees. Anyhow, they undoubtedly have a legal obligation to respond worthily to the needs of a pregnant or working mother and not resort to extreme behaviors. I will, therefore, trace the problem back to the state itself. _Of course, there are laws that support women, but who will support small businesses afterward?_ If we want to be fair, we should look at both sides and understand that they are both in a situation that makes things difficult for them. And the state supports women’s rights, which is of high importance, but doesn’t support small businesses to be able to support those women; and the vicious cycle continues.\n\n***\n\nAll that is happening around women's labor rights is a chain of **problems, mistakes, and mismanagement**, and you don't know which one to solve first. And the same happens for every social problem we come across. However, I am not interested in elaborating on what each government should do but on what we can do. \n\n_And we must not tolerate such behaviors._ It is a woman's right to want to start a family and not have to lose her job or not be able to find one. Women who face ill-treatment by employers due to pregnancy or maternity should report these incidents and claim their rights. _How do we build a healthy society if women raise their children in poor conditions?_ The solutions are there; it's just that employers don’t want to collaborate to solve them. This is probably a nutrition-related question. Do you have any ideas on how to stop eating snacks all day, every day? I work from home mainly, and between meetings, I frequently visit the pantry to get a little snack, which most of the time is unhealthy. Is there a way to stop this habit? I have already started gaining weight.”_\n\nThe Gal Answers:\n----------------\n\nThere are plenty of ways to stop snacking all day, but it depends on the origin of the problem. There can be different reasons why you have the urge to snack all day. It may be because you don’t have regular meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and you replace them with snacks, which could temporarily solve the hunger problem but can’t actually replace those important three meals. Also, constant snacking can be an indication of **higher stress levels**. Prolonged exposure to elevated cortisol, which happens when you are stressed, especially in case of chronic stress, can impact our metabolism, and as a consequence, we are prone to increased food intake, fat storage, and potential weight gain. \n\nSo, you first need to identify the reasons behind your tendency to have snacks, unhealthy snacks. Sugar can be addictive if consumed regularly, and this is why you feel more inclined to choose an unhealthy snack. If you have sugar cravings, read what our nutritionist suggests [here](https://www.workingal.com/articles/yes-you-can-deal-with-sugar-craving) in order to deal with them. \n\nAs you see, the habit can be broken. But it needs time and smart steps toward your goal. And next time you go grocery shopping, please leave alone all the treats and instead get some healthier options. Did you know that yogurt with honey, strawberries and a bit of almond butter will definitely cover your need for snacking but in a healthy way? \n\nCheck our recipes [here](https://www.workingal.com/categories/food) for more ideas! Good luck! \n\n \\*\\*\\*\\*\n\n## E. Asks: Antisocial alert\n\n![ask the gals column](https://assets.workingal.com/ask_the_gals_column_7bb0e34309.jpg)\n\n_“I am 32 years old, and I am an introvert. This causes me a lot of trouble because I am unable to network. For instance, I don't feel well when I join my company's networking events, and it is hard for me to participate in the office fun. I feel jealous of people who are so extroverts and can get into a conversation with anyone, and I think that this harms my career advancement. Is there any way to overcome that, or am I destined to be where I am for the rest of my life?”_\n\nThe Gal Answers:\n----------------\n\nFirst of all, I’m sorry you feel this way. I understand that being an introvert in a world where communication is everything is not easy. However, it’s not the **end of the world** and being an introvert can’t take your career away! Many introverts face similar challenges in professional settings, and many have had exceptional careers. There are some strategies you can follow in order to be a bit less introverted and start exploring the world around you. First, learn to appreciate what you have because introverted people are often more focused and can excel in independent work, **strategic planning**, and in-depth analysis, while extroverts have small talks around the office. Also, you don’t have to be friends with everyone or talk to anyone you don’t feel comfortable. Focus on building a rapport with some key colleagues you feel closer to and keep in touch with them. Say hello to colleagues during breaks, offer to help someone on a project —the easiest way to make friends is to help someone or ask for help— or participate in small group discussions. If your stress originates from the fact that you don’t know how to start a conversation, then use some classic icebreakers that we all use. Say something about the weather; most of us want to complain about the weather, I don’t know why, it’s science probably. Also, you can ask questions about their after-hours, like about a book they lately read or an interesting podcast or you can share one you read or listened to and then ask them. You generally don’t care to have a deep conversation with anyone, just something to fill the silence. The best you can do is to practice making small talk in low-pressure situations, such as with a barista or a cashier. The classic _“How is your day going?”_ is a game-changer! Believe it or not, being a bit more extrovert can be practiced and with small steps you can be more open to communication. Let us know how it goes!\n\n\\*\\*\\*\\*\n\n## Monica Geller Asks: Pig situation\n\n![ask the gals column](https://assets.workingal.com/ask_the_gals_column_de97de003a.jpg)\n\n_“I am Monica Geller. I am incredibly focused on cleaning everything and having everything in a specific space so every time someone ruins that, I feel at least nervous. I recently moved in with my partner, and they are not very organize,d so this drives me nuts. I do whatever I can to keep my sanity, but I don't want to be alerted 24h/7 because the other part doesn't understand that it's important to be clean. Is this a red flag?”_\n\nThe Gal Answers:\n----------------\n\nHello Monica! Long time no see. How is New York? Well, —obviously— you are not the only one, and honestly, what’s the harm of being tidy and clean? No harm, but if it interferes with your mental well-being and your relationships with others, then it can harm you a lot. Differing levels of cleanliness and organization are a common source of conflict in relationships, and the **constant stress and frustration** can erode intimacy and create resentment. So, we wouldn't call a red flag if someone has a different perception of what clean means unless we are talking about actual dirt or similar practices —e.g., not having any _personal hygiene or throwing food on the floor without cleaning it up_. In the case that they just don’t clean the dishes one minute after they have dinner or leave their towel down after they shower, there is one effective solution: communication. Talk to your partner honestly, tell them what bothers you and discuss what you can do to solve the problem. Don’t start blaming them for things they do and annoy you because they probably don’t know they annoy you. We are raised with different experiences and perceptions, and it’s not always easy to understand others. So, talk and communicate your feelings. Also, be willing to compromise on some of your expectations; it’s not about you, it’s about both of you. The same applies to the other side: if your partner doesn’t take into consideration your uneasiness or doesn’t make any effort to adapt, it may be a sign that the relationship is not a good fit. \n\nHowever, maybe it’s time you did a little **self-reflection** and tried to understand where your need for constant tidiness and organization derives from. Is it anxiety or a tendency to maintain control? Are you a perfectionist? If you find the root, you will be able to address the issue.\n\n\\*\\*\\*\\*\n\n## Ashley Asks: The end of the world\n\n![ask the gals column](https://assets.workingal.com/ask_the_gals_column_14ede8a93e.jpg)\n\n_“I am terrified of what is happening in the world. There are wars everywhere, people are miserable, and even though my life is fairly good, I can't complain, I feel that the end of the world is somehow close. Is it, or am I just a pessimist?”_\n\nThe Gal Answers:\n----------------\n\nHistorically speaking, the world has never stopped having wars, and there has always been a conflict around the corner. However, I agree, it’s so unsettling to live in a world where you wake up every day and the news is about a new global challenge: a new virus that escaped, two countries that are playing diplomatic and military games, people who kill and are killed. Yes, it’s harsh. _But it’s not the end of the world, at least as we know it._ \n\nThe problem is not the news per se; it’s that we focus on them. Did you know countless people, businesses, and organizations are working towards positive change, such as combating poverty, protecting the environment, and promoting peace? Have you noticed that lately, science is moving so fast that we will be tackling serious illnesses in a little while? Probably not, because we are wired to follow the negative news. **Yes, the world is not in good shape, but it never was**. But broadcasting the news of a new conflict some decades ago would take more days to be known than now when something happens, and we are automatically watching it live on TV. It’s not the world; science and technology evolved, and we have instant access to information. And how to combat it? Shift your focus on the things you can control in your own life. You may not be able to stop the wars immediately, but showing empathy to others and being kind for no reason is a good start. There are millions of causes to support; years ago, I read something so powerful and inspiring that it really helped me overcome such unpleasant feelings: _“For everything bad thing that is happening in the world, I will be doing a good act.”_ So, next time you hear something terrible on the news, turn off the TV and do something nice for someone else. Help the older person cross the street or pick up the trash and throw them out. Make conscious choices that protect the environment and ensure your life choices are not burdening anyone. You can start from [here](https://www.workingal.com/articles/reducing-food-waste-how-small-steps-can-make-a-big-difference) for inspiration. Don’t forget that it’s not your fault if bad things happen worldwide. You can worry about what you are doing to be a valuable part of it. When pessimism hits, engage in activities that bring you joy and help you relax, such as spending time in nature, practicing mindfulness, or talking to your loved ones.","ask-the-gals-monica-geller-and-the-end-of-the-world","ask the gals, Q&A, women problems, working women issues, problems for women, sexism, competitive colleague, ask column","Ask The Gals about whatever problem you have, and they will answer it! Her films, from _\"Blow-Up\"_ to _\"Je t'aime, moi non plus,\"_ showcased her natural charisma and acting prowess. Though her heavy accent in French eventually did prevent her from getting some roles, it turned out to be an asset in her career, as French audiences found it charming. She later stated: _\"Without my accent, I would have had a different career.\"_ Her collaborations with Serge Gainsbourg, particularly their provocative and intimate songs, pushed the boundaries of French music and redefined **female sexuality.** \n\n\n![jane birkin inspiration](https://assets.workingal.com/jane_birkin_inspiration_edc4182298.jpg)\n\n_[Photo](https://goodintention.co/blog/remembering-jane-birkin-an-icon-of-fashion-film-and-music/)_\n\nBirkin married composer John Barry in 1965, with whom she had a daughter, Kate Barry. They divorced in 1968. However, her most famous and influential relationship was with French singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg. They had a daughter together, **Charlotte Gainsbourg**, who also became a successful actress. Their relationship was unconventional and often controversial, but it deeply impacted both their artistic careers. She had also a long-term relationship with French filmmaker Jacques Doillon, with whom she had a daughter, Lou Doillon, also a successful musician and actress. **Motherhood** played a significant role in her life. She was a devoted mother to her three daughters, who all pursued successful careers in the arts.\n\nMental Health Issues\n====================\n\nBirkin openly discussed her struggles with anxiety and **depression** throughout her life. She candidly discussed these mental health challenges in interviews and public appearances, helping to destigmatize these conditions. Birkin described herself as insecure and unhappy and said she wanted to be loved. She also said she had **stage fright** but thought it helped her perform better. She also said she had OCD when she was 16 and that it made her fear the air around her. She didn't leave the house for months.\n\nShe was also open about her **troubled relationships** with her daughters, Kate Barry, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Lou Doillon. She also described her relationship with Serge Gainsbourg as _“toxic.”_ Birkin said that she sang songs to overcome pain. She also wrote songs about the death of her daughter, Kate, who died tragically in 2013 in Paris after falling from her fourth-floor apartment.\n\n\n![jane birkin inspiration](https://assets.workingal.com/jane_birkin_inspiration_b51d2214e8.jpg)\n\n_Photo: Getty Images_\n\nHer openness about her struggles likely resonated with many who faced similar challenges, demonstrating that even iconic figures experience mental health issues. By sharing her experiences, Birkin helped to break down the stigma surrounding mental health and encouraged others to seek help and support.\n\nBirkin also faced public **scrutiny** and criticism, particularly regarding her relationship with Gainsbourg and their provocative music. The songs often featured explicit lyrics and imagery, which were considered shocking and provocative for the time. This led to **controversy** and even bans in some countries. Some critics viewed their relationship and music as exploitative and degrading to women.\n\nHowever, despite the criticism, Birkin and Gainsbourg defended their artistic expression, arguing that their work was a form of **artistic freedom** and a reflection of their own unique relationship.\n\nA Fashion Icon\n==============\n\nEven though Birkin had a career in French cinema, perhaps her personal style most resonated with the public. Her simple yet elegant look – flowing dresses, bare feet, and a basket bag – became synonymous with a carefree and bohemian spirit. Ironically, her casual complaint about the lack of a suitable travel bag during a flight led to the creation of the iconic [Hermès Birkin](https://www.hermes.com/us/en/content/106191-birkin/) bag, a testament to her enduring influence on fashion.   \n\nThe Birkin Bag\n--------------\n\n\n![jane birkin inspiration](https://assets.workingal.com/jane_birkin_inspiration_88a25fa969.jpg)\n\n_[Photo](https://www.sothebys.com/en/articles/7-secret-details-about-jane-birkins-original-birkin-revealed)_\n\nIn 1984, Jane Birkin was seated next to Jean-Louis Dumas, then CEO of Hermès, on a flight from Paris to London. Frustrated by the lack of a suitable travel bag, Birkin expressed her difficulties to Dumas. Her straw basket had just spilled its contents onto the airplane's floor.   Impressed by her candor, Dumas took it upon himself to design a perfect travel bag for her. The result was the now-legendary Hermès Birkin bag.\n\nHandcrafted from the finest leathers (crocodile, alligator, calfskin) with meticulous attention to detail. Simple yet elegant, the Birkin features rolled top handles, a padlock and keys, and a signature _\"saddle stitch.\"_ **Production is limited, and waiting lists for certain styles can be years long.** The Birkin bag quickly became a symbol of ultimate luxury, coveted by celebrities and collectors worldwide. It's a testament to the enduring power of a simple conversation and a designer's dedication to creating a truly exceptional product.\n\nAn Inspirational Woman\n----------------------\n\nBeyond her artistic achievements, Birkin was a woman of strong convictions. She was a vocal **advocate** for women's rights, animal welfare, and environmental causes. Her life, though filled with personal and professional triumphs, was not without its share of challenges. She faced public scrutiny and heartbreak with grace and resilience, inspiring others to accept their own **vulnerabilities** and pursue their passions with uncompromising honesty.   \n\nWhile Birkin is usually interconnected with the Birkin Bag and her effortless French style, she was an active climate change activist. While advocating for political action, Birkin likely also emphasized the importance of individual responsibility in addressing **climate change**. This could include actions such as reducing consumption, adopting sustainable practices, and supporting environmentally conscious businesses. Jane Birkin used her public platform to raise awareness about climate change and advocate for urgent action.\n\n![jane birkin inspiration](https://assets.workingal.com/jane_birkin_inspiration_01b2630255.jpg)\n\n[Photo](https://mastermindparis.com/features/remembering-icon-jane-birkin/)\n\nThe open letter in the French newspaper _“Le Monde,”_ signed by Jane Birkin and other prominent figures, called upon French politicians to take immediate and decisive action to combat climate change.\n\nThe letter likely emphasized the urgency of the climate crisis and how it could be prevented. The letter stressed the importance of international collaboration in addressing the global nature of climate change since increased public awareness and engagement are crucial for driving meaningful change and holding governments accountable.\n\n### Undoubtedly, Jane Birkin's legacy extends far beyond her artistic contributions. \n\nShe serves as a reminder that true style transcends trends and that authenticity, both in personal and professional life, is the ultimate form of self-expression. Her life and work continue to inspire and influence, reminding us to accept and embrace our **individuality**, pursue our passions with courage, and live life with a touch of effortless chic and unwavering authenticity that is still relevant.\n\nHer Famous Quotes\n-----------------\n\n_\"My look is a cocktail. I'm not as nicely turned out as the French, but I don't care like the English.\"_\n\n_\"It's impossible to be stylish without confidence.\"_   \n\n_\"My mother was right: When you've got nothing left, all you can do is get into silk underwear and start reading Proust.\"_   \n\n_\"When you start recognizing that you're having fun, life can be delightful.\"_   \n\n_\"A Birkin bag is a very good rain hat; just put everything else in a plastic bag.\"_\n\n_\"Love is a wonderful thing, but it's not everything.\"_\n\n_\"I'm not afraid of getting older. I'm more afraid of not having anything to say.\"_\n\n_\"Happiness is not something ready made. However, during the reign of King Numa Pompilius, January was established as the first month of the year.\n\nIn 46 BCE, Julius Caesar reformed the Roman calendar (the Julian Calendar). This solidified January 1st as the beginning of the year.\n\nNot all cultures immediately adopted January 1st as New Year's Day. Some continued to use other dates, such as March 25th or December 25th.\n\n### However, nowadays, January 1st is the most widely recognized start of the year globally.\n\nAnd we have 20 reasons why we love the first month of the year!\n***\n\n**A Fresh Start:** New Year, new beginnings! Asks: Busy Beaver\n\n![ask the gals vanity and sexism](https://assets.workingal.com/ask_the_gals_vanity_and_sexism_c78307340a.jpg)\n\n_“I am so busy at work that I don’t have the time for self-care and this is putting a huge stress on me. What should I do? It feels really frustrating working long hours and the only thing I have time to do is go home and sleep. I miss my college life. Everything was easier back then.”_\n\nThe Gal Answers:\n----------------\n\nThe first thing I would say is that we are pretty much all busy at work. Life in capitalism is hard, and in order to survive, we need to hustle, and hustle, and hustle. However, in order to make some time for self-care, we need to define what self-care is for each one. Some people find reading to be self-care; for others, self-care is going out for drinks with your friends or an evening of Netflix and chilling. Also, self-care doesn’t need to be an everyday occurrence or 1-2 hours per day. It can be 10 minutes of your beauty routine or -the best- 8 consecutive hours of quality sleep. \n\nI know it’s hard not having 8 full hours of doing what you like, but (remember the perfect balance plan: 8 hours of work, 8 hours of sleep, and 8 hours of free time). Tell me one person who manages to balance their time so flawlessly, and I will retract the answer (and cry in bed, unable to understand how they do it!).\n\nA way to find some time for self-care —whatever that means for you— is to discipline yourself into adding at least 15 minutes daily to do what you want. For instance, if you wake up at the last minute to leave for work, set the alarm earlier and dedicate those 15 minutes to yourself and your favorite activity. Also, if you are working too much, think about how to manage your time better.\n\nAt this point, let me remind you of our motto at The Working Gal: _Don’t be busy; be productive!_ Aka, identify and change the things that keep you busy and don’t let you leave work on time, and make some changes/alterations to your schedule to fit your favorite activities. There is always time; we just don’t use our time wisely. \n\n***\n\n## Christina Asks: Partner Alert\n\n![ask the gals vanity and sexism](https://assets.workingal.com/ask_the_gals_vanity_and_sexism_95a5000983.jpg)\n\n_“I think that my partner is cheating on me. Should I search their phone?”_\n\nThe Gal Answers:\n----------------\n\nNo good has ever come from searching our partner’s phone. Never. If you feel that your partner is cheating on you, have an honest conversation with them and express your concerns. Depending on the conversation, you will identify the signs that they are lying. If they get on the defensive, something is going on. Also, check for gaslighting signs: if you have facts and they try to turn them against you, something is wrong. If they try to actually engage with what you are saying, they will probably try to resolve your concerns and doubts, and, in this case, your concerns may be invalid.\n\nAlso, what made you think that your partner is cheating on you? It would be helpful to have some more info on that. Have they changed their behavior toward you? Is a new person in their life making you think this way? Or is it something that derives from your insecurity?\n\nBefore you react to the facts you have, be honest with yourself and aware of the situation. Don’t rush to blame them; try to control your emotions before acting. In any case, trust your gut; where there is smoke, there is fire. And remember that the truth may hurt sometimes but will come out, no matter how much somebody tries to hide it. \n\nWish you good luck, and keep us posted!\n\n****\n\n## X. Asks: Barbie Girl\n\n![ask the gals vanity and sexism](https://assets.workingal.com/ask_the_gals_vanity_and_sexism_622e8d8315.jpg)\n\n_“Happy holidays! I have a question: I don’t know what to think about plastic surgeries. Are they a way of working on our self-confidence by eliminating the things that we don’t like about ourselves or it’s a sign of vanity and intelligence is what matters?”_\n\nThe Gal Answers:\n----------------\n\nWell, a lot of people don’t know how to feel about plastic surgery. It’s a profoundly sociological issue with many aspects, and there is no clear answer on how to think of them. You may also not feel anything about them if it doesn’t affect you.\n\nPlastic surgery is not only cosmetic surgery. Plastic surgery has been historically used for people with body dysmorphia or victims of accidents in order to reconstruct their bodies for medical reasons. And their self-esteem, of course -mental health is health. Also, for individuals with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), a mental health condition where they obsess over perceived flaws, plastic surgery can sometimes be a part of a treatment plan alongside therapy. So, having this in mind, plastic surgery is an essential part of people’s health and well-being. \n\nOn the aesthetics aspect now, where women have been criticized for years for their choices to have bigger breasts, to refine their noses or to make their skin look younger, the question you should ask yourself is, _“Why do I care?”_\n\nWomen have always been criticized for whatever they do. If they are beautiful, they are dumb. If they are ugly, they will end up old maids full of cats (what’s wrong with cats, I never understood). If they don’t pay attention to their looks, they are unattractive and losers. If they pay attention to themselves, they are vain and shallow. So, they lose whatever they decide to do. The problem is that, as women, we pay much more attention as we need to others and their opinions of us. So, you don’t know what you feel about plastic surgeries because, on the one hand, you feel like it’s everyone’s right to feel good about themselves, but on the other, you feel that if you get your butt bigger, then people will start blaming you for trying to be someone else and a more advanced version of yourself.\n\nWhat will help you to recognize what you feel is to stop thinking about others and ask yourself whether you would ever have plastic surgery and, if not, why. If it is because you feel good about yourself and wouldn’t change anything, then great. However, remember that not all people feel good about themselves, and some might feel better if their noses were smaller. Why take that away from them?\n\nUltimately, the decision to undergo plastic surgery is a personal one. If an individual feels it will improve their quality of life and happiness, that's their right, and we don’t have to feel anything about it. Their body, nobody else’s choice.\n\n***\n\n## Queen Asks: \n\n![ask the gals vanity and sexism](https://assets.workingal.com/ask_the_gals_vanity_and_sexism_94f2578780.jpg)\n\n_“What do you think is the best way to deal with sexism?”_\n\nThe Gal Answers:\n----------------\n\nIf I had a penny for every time somebody asked about that, I would be so rich that I wouldn’t have to write anymore (kidding, I can’t think of my life without writing). \n\nDealing with sexism is not easy; there is not a specific answer that could solve the problem (we wouldn’t be talking about that if we had found the solution!) and it depends on the context. What I mean by “context” is that sexism is prevalent everywhere: at the bus stop, at work, in personal relationships, and even within our families. We can’t avoid it, but we can choose how to deal with it, depending on what we want to achieve. Sexism is deeply rooted in our society, and even if we have made some progress over the years, completely eliminating sexism would take many, many years. Don’t forget that sexism benefits people, not only men, but also women. \n\nCurrently, the key “weapon” societies have against sexism is education. Education can help all genders understand the roots of sexism, stereotypes, and attitudes and can engage people proactively to address them and eliminate them. When people understand something completely, this is the first step to fighting it. And, as long as people are uneducated on sexism, they cannot confront it or get rid of it. If you don’t know what you are fighting, how are you expected to win it? \n\nWhile the newest generations are more aware and better educated than the previous ones, and while there are amazing and hopeful examples of battling against sexism, it’s still around us, and sometimes we don’t even notice it. And sometimes we use it for our benefit, as I mentioned before. For instance, men usually face less competition in male-dominated fields and have easier access to leadership roles than their female counterparts. Also, women who don’t want a harsh career path (which is totally okay, by the way) may benefit from the societal expectations that usually prioritize domestic roles, and they feel less guilty about their choices. \n\nIf you ask how to deal with sexism in your everyday life, there is no manual, but there are some tips to address sexist behaviors. If it’s in the work context and you hear about a sexist joke, then ask for more information, like _“I didn’t get the joke; can you explain it to me?”_ This way, you make clear that you don’t find sexist jokes funny and entertaining, and you put the person who told the joke in a position to feel -at least- weird.\n\nIf your partner shows sexist behaviors, try not to overreact immediately; sometimes, people don’t notice behaviors until someone calls them out. Ask them why they think the way they think, and explain how this makes you feel and how hurtful it can be. \n\nNow, about the classic family gatherings where older people make sexist jokes all the time, the best solution would be to minimize contact with them because rarely will this end up in a fruitful conversation, and also, we can’t fight all battles—one battle at a time.\n\nYou may find interesting [that](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-to-handle-sexist-people-in-business) and [that](https://www.workingal.com/articles/10-sexist-quotes-every-woman-has-heard-1), and keep in mind that sexism needs patience, discussion, and, in some cases, empathy.","ask-the-gals-vanity-and-cheating","Ask The Gals about whatever problem you have, and we will give you an answer. According to many studies and research, women are disproportionately subjected to **harsher judgment online,** facing heightened scrutiny of their appearance, opinions, and actions.\n\n### Data show that it is increasingly clear that women and girls experience [online disproportionate and different harms online](https://www.socialeurope.eu/social-media-the-harms-to-women-and-girls#:~:text=These%20include%3A%20sexist%20stereotyping%20in,of%20women%20in%20misogynistic%20pornography.) compared with boys and men.\n\nFollowing the recent drama about [Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni](https://www.workingal.com/articles/when-did-blake-lively-s-public-image-take-a-turn) and the much-discussed movie _“It Ends With Us,”_ followed by substantial online scrutiny towards Blake Lively regarding the way she promotes the movie, we see how the online audience doesn’t hesitate to scan thoroughly and attack her whole personality intensely, finding “dirt” from her past and commenting on everything about her looks, partner choices, and actions. And Blake Lively is **only one of the victims of this online court.** Many famous (or not) people have been victims of online attacks and threats of “canceling” them because they did something “wrong.” And it’s not easy to recover from this constant criticism, which is not constructive; it’s mean and harmful. \n\n_Historically, this has not been a recent behavior towards women._ Media and press seem to find it extremely easy to attack and mistreat women, especially for their personal choices. **Men seem to be intact** or -at least- not facing the same rage. The previous generations, Gen-X and Millennials, certainly remember the [Clinton-Monica Lewinsky scandal](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clinton–Lewinsky_scandal), where she constantly faced intense public scrutiny and widespread condemnation for her consensual relationship with then-President Bill Clinton. This media coverage often focused on shaming and demeaning her while mainly overlooking the **power imbalance** inherent in the situation. A 22-year-old woman with a man of power. However, she took all the hits when the scandal broke out. \n\n\n_And who can forget about Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie?_ That the press “threw an online party” after the disclosure of Aniston’s divorce from Brad Pitt and his entering into a relationship with Angelina Jolie immediately after. Aniston was the one who lost the handsome, sexy, and fantastic husband, and Jolie was the one who stole this “amazing” husband. The media heavily speculated about Aniston's desire to have children, often framing her inability to conceive as a **personal failing** and a contributing factor to the divorce, while Jolie was frequently cast as the \"homewrecker.\" However, Brad Pitt didn’t have anything to do with this. While Pitt undoubtedly faced media attention, the narrative around him often cast him in a more **favorable light** compared to the scrutiny faced by Aniston and Jolie.\n\n![online rage against women](https://assets.workingal.com/online_rage_against_women_55a4e9aacc.jpg)\n\nAnother woman, a victim of the online “vice squad,” **Meghan Markle**, the Duchess of Sussex, experienced significant media scrutiny following her marriage to Prince Harry. The marriage was initially celebrated, but later, the public perception shifted, with criticism arising during her pregnancy, parenting choices, and home renovations, including instances of racism and attacks on her relationship with her family. These pressures ultimately led the couple to step back from their royal duties and relocate to the United States, where people are lurking around the corner for her next move to be analyzed criticized. \n\n[Taylor Swift](https://www.workingal.com/articles/inspirational-taylor-swift) couldn’t be excluded from the list, considering that she has faced significant scrutiny throughout her career. This includes criticism of her **dating life**, often framed in a manner that some perceive as slut-shaming. Her physical appearance, particularly her weight, has also been subject to public commentary. Her musical style and friendships have also been widely debated and sometimes dismissed. Perhaps most notably, the media response to her [sexual assault case](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taylor_Swift_sexual_assault_trial), where some minimized her experience, drew considerable criticism. While she has received praise, the prevailing narrative in some media circles has often been more negative than positive.\n\nAnd the list is not focused only on the **entertainment industry**. No matter what their profession is, women cannot always escape their online destiny. For example, women in politics pretty much face the same behavior, no matter how much they contribute. [Fridkin states in the Journal of Politics](https://journalistsresource.org/media/gender-bias-news-politics/), _“In senatorial races, women receive less campaign coverage than their male counterparts and the coverage they receive is more negative — emphasizing their unlikely chances of victory.”_\n\nThe media heavily scrutinized **Michelle Obama** during and after her husband’s presidency. While her initiatives during that time were intriguing, she received most criticism mainly for her looks and her identity as a woman of color. Instead of her work, she received numerous comments about her body and eating habits.\n\nAnother victim of this online scrutiny was the Greek MEP **Eva Kaili**, who was arrested and charged with corruption in the European Union but was indeed sentenced before her trial by the media and the audience. She received a considerable amount of online rage, far beyond the legal case, and _focused on her looks and connections_ as factors for advancing her career in the European Parliament rather than her participation in the actual case. However, the other [four people who were charged along with her](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qatar_corruption_scandal_at_the_European_Parliament) did not get that hostile rage, and nobody talked about their bodies and looks.\n\nThe list goes on, but it is not exhaustive and does not include only famous women. If you scroll down your social media, you will understand how different people treat women online than men. Comments about women’s looks, behaviors, and motherhood abilities are ubiquitous. \n\n### People love to express rage towards women much more than towards men. \n\n![online rage against women](https://assets.workingal.com/online_rage_against_women_a92bd228a6.jpg)\n\nWomen are victims of stereotypes, and they are **expected to fit into those stereotypes**. They are often held to higher standards and face more criticism for their opinions and actions, even when compared to men expressing similar views. Women frequently face discrediting of their expertise or qualifications in usually dismissive or [condescending language](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-language-is-affected-by-our-gender). And this language and behavior does not only originate from men -it originates from women as well  -from mothers who scrutinize every mother who puts herself online to women who insult and feel superior to women who are dressed in a specific way that doesn’t match their preferences. This internalized misogyny stems from the pervasive **societal messages** and stereotypes that devalue women and their contributions, and online platforms are the most popular way to express it.\n\nThe question resulting from the above is whether we can create an online -and offline- society where _women can have flaws but won’t be humiliated and harassed when those flaws come to the surface_. \n\nIt’s at least childish to believe that women are perfect or that they don’t make mistakes or even be less than angels on Earth. They are not; they are **human beings** with positive aspects and flaws. They do things well, they can contribute equally to our society, and they can also make mistakes -big-time mistakes. However, it’s unfair for them to be judged more **aggressively** and treated disrespectfully, especially without having complete awareness of the circumstances. It exudes a feeling of wholesomeness and anticipation of the new year. Nevertheless, over the last decades, it has increasingly become synonymous with the stress and materialism of gift-giving. Instead of getting ready to meet our loved ones and enjoy delicious meals with them, we **tend to anticipate the gifts instead of the people.**\n\nNevertheless, we cannot argue that the tradition of exchanging gifts can be a fun way to show appreciation and love, but it can also contribute to a sense of obligation, disappointment, and commercialism that detracts from the true meaning of Christmas.\n\nOne of the primary downsides of gift exchange is the immense pressure it places on individuals to spend money on gifts. Months before the holiday season, we are bombarded with advertisements and marketing campaigns encouraging us to buy more and more and more. New last-minute Christmas deals are on the everyday menu, and we are getting into a panic mode when [adjusting our budget](https://www.workingal.com/articles/be-financially-fit-your-101-guide-ebook) for the Christmas gifts. However, this gift-giving pressure can lead to financial stress and anxiety, especially for those who are struggling to make ends meet.\n\nAnother issue with gift exchange is the potential for **disappointment**. When people receive gifts that they don't want or need, it can lead to feelings of frustration and resentment. This can be particularly harmful to children, who may feel pressured to express gratitude for gifts they don't enjoy. Instead of appreciating the process of gift-giving and the ritual of exchanging gifts around the Christmas tree, we put ourselves in a position of disappointment instead in a position of [gratitude](https://www.workingal.com/articles/the-power-of-being-grateful) that someone was thoughtful enough to gift us something. \n\nGift exchange has fueled a culture of materialism, where the value of a person is measured by the **quantity** and quality of gifts they receive. This consumerist mindset has led to a relentless pursuit of the latest gadgets, the trendiest clothes, and the most **expensive** toys. It has turned Christmas into a competition rather than a celebration of love and compassion.\n\n![consumerism on christmas](https://assets.workingal.com/consumerism_on_christmas_5f01d17e10.jpg)\n\nAlso, let’s consider the environmental impact of gift exchange. The excessive production and consumption of goods contribute to pollution, deforestation, and climate change. The mass packaging waste generated during the holiday season further aggravates the problem.\n\nAs a result of the above, the most significant problem with gift exchange is that it can overshadow the true meaning of Christmas. **The holiday season should be a time to focus on family, friends, and community.** However, when we prioritize gift-giving, we can lose sight of what truly matters and we tend to be completely materialistic.\n\nA More Meaningful Christmas\n---------------------------\nSo, how can we make Christmas more meaningful and recall the essence of the holiday season? In order to recapture the spirit of Christmas, we should think of other more positive ways to **celebrate** the holiday. For example, we could focus on spending quality time with loved ones, volunteering in our communities, or simply enjoying the season's peace and tranquility. Possibly, by shifting our focus away from material possessions and towards meaningful connections, we can rediscover the true joy of Christmas. This means that instead of focusing on **material possessions**, we should prioritize spending quality time with loved ones, volunteering in our communities, and practicing acts of kindness.\n\nGift exchange can be a fun tradition, but it is essential to remember that it is not the only way to celebrate the holiday season. Let’s prioritize more meaningful connections and acts of kindness so we can create a more fulfilling and joyful Christmas for ourselves and others.","christmas-gift-exchange-an-ode-to-consumerism","gift exchange, christmas spirit, consumerism during christmas holidays","Amidst the endless gift exchanges and parties during Christmas, maybe we have lost the true meaning of the Christmas spirit. Since her horrific story was brought to light, it has inspired millions of people around the world, not only victims of **sexual abuse** but also non-victims, and she hopes her case will change French legislation regarding rape and consent. _\"It's time for the macho, patriarchal society that downplays the importance of rape to change,\"_ Giselle Pellico said in a statement at the trial that began on September 2, 2024, in Mazan. A few weeks ago, she was the shocking cover of [German Vogue](https://www.the-independent.com/life-style/gisele-pelicot-vogue-cover-germany-france-rape-trial-b2653832.html) on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and we see her on the [BBC list alongside other women](https://www.bbc.com/mediacentre/2024/bbc-reveals-100-women-2024) who want this world to change, in every way possible.\n\n**Today, she got the justice she deserved.** Dominique Pelicot, her ex-husband who repeatedly drugged and raped her over the course of almost a decade has been found guilty of all the charges against him. He was found guilty of raping Gisèle Pelicot and sentenced to 20 years in prison, which is the maximum sentence for the charge of aggravated rape. \n\nHowever, it wasn’t only him. He would invite dozens of men he met online to their home to rape her while she was unconscious of the pills that he slipped to her drinks or food. The men were often strangers to her. Today, the court in Mazan found all 51 defendants guilty in the case. Dominique Pelicot was sentenced to 20 years in prison, the maximum sentence. The other defendants received sentences ranging from 3 to 15 years. \n\n_\"Mr Pellico, you are guilty of the aggravated rape of Gisèle Pelicot,\"_ said the president of the Avignon criminal court, Roger Arata. According to reports, Dominique Pelicot will not be eligible for parole until he has served two-thirds of his sentence. At this point, it should be noted that all 51 defendants were charged with serial rape and one of them, Nicolas François, was also charged with **depicting child abuse**. Most of the defendants denied the charges, saying they believed it was a consensual sex game orchestrated by the couple.\n\n![gisele pelicot trial vogue](https://assets.workingal.com/gisele_pelicot_trial_vogue_84c4bfaab8.jpg)\n\nAccording to BBC, the defendants were sentenced to sentences lower than those sought by the prosecutor at the arraignment, while Giselle's children, David and Caroline, were clearly disappointed. On December 16, Dominique Pelico begged his family to accept his _\"apology\"_ and hailed Giselle's _\"courage\"_. _\"I would like to start by saluting the courage of my ex-wife,\"_ he had told the Avignon court. _\"I ask her, as well as the rest of my family, to accept my apology.\"_\n\nDespite the severity of the crimes, nearly all of **Gisèle's rapists received lenient sentences**. Six will be released today, having served their time or received suspended sentences. The longest sentence, excluding Dominique's, was 15 years for Romain Vandevelde, who raped Gisèle six times, while we was aware that he was HIV positive. Jean-Pierre Marechal, who raped his own wife using Dominique's methods, was sentenced in 12 years. Gisèle's daughter, Caroline Darian, was stunned by the leniency of the sentences.\n\nHowever, the sentences were not well received by a vast amount of the public. Anne-Cécile Mailfert, president of Fondation des Femmes, denounced the sentences as a _\"disgrace\"_ and a **systemic failure** to protect victims of sexual violence.\n\nHowever, what we should keep from this horror story is that Gisèle Pelicot, by appearing in public and putting a face to the victim, **wants the shame to change sides**. And she has already done so. She wants to fight for all those women who may never be recognized as victims of rape. Her life was destroyed as her husband of decades drugged her with pills he slipped into her food, then raped her and invited other men to molest her body. He filmed all these horrific moments, keeping a specific file with a date, name or pseudonym and pornographic title on his computer. Gisèle Pelico was raped at least 92 times, but her rage has turned into strength, voice and protection.\n\n\n#### Images source:\n[France 24](https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20241212-gisele-pelicot-france-rape-survivor-who-became-a-feminist-hero) \n[The Independent](https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gisele-pelicot-vogue-cover-germany-france-rape-trial-b2653832.html)","gisele-pelicot-case-did-she-get-the-justice-she-deserved","gisele pelicot, gisele pelicot trial, france rape trial, pelicot sentence, gisele pelicot vogue cover","The mass rape trial in France has come to an end and Gisele Pelicot is a symbol for all those women who are victims of violence.
