That’s an exciting column you have in there. So, maybe a bit common problem but I feel very stressed. About life, about my job, about my relationships. I feel so stressed that sometimes I am blocked, and I don’t know how to move forward. Is this something I can do to help me?”_\n\n## The Gal Answers\n\n![Botox and Sleepless Nights](https://assets.workingal.com/Botox_and_Sleepless_Nights_4_47d2015d67.webp)\n\nHey, Desperate! To begin with, don’t call yourself desperate; you predispose yourself to feel this way, which can stress you out more. Your problem now. Stress is is a natural human response to challenges and threats, and it's your body's way of reacting to any situation that you perceive as demanding or threatening. Stress, in normal levels can help you overcome life-threatening situations; for instance, when someone makes dangerous manoeuvers while driving and you are close, your body will stress and put you in a position to avoid the unsafe driver. Also, stress in moderate amounts can help you carry out a tight deadline at work, helping you to find quick solutions to a problem and focus more on finishing it. However, if your stress levels go beyond ordinary, then you usually have this blockage which can paralyze you and you can’t move forward, per your words.\n\nWe can’t make an evaluation of your stress levels but stress in general has specific causes that rarely have to do with each minor incident. If you stress to a point you can’t think clearly when you miss the bus, then you are more stressed than you are supposed to be. There isn’t any magic wand that can help you battle stress; it needs time and effort. What you can do when you are in a stressful situation is to take a step back, breathe, and put the problem into perspective. Ask yourself why is this situation, person, or task is causing you so much stress and analyze whether it’s worth it. Is it a life-threatening thing or is it just a bump in the road? Also, what is the worst thing that could happen if it doesn't work the ideal way? These questions take you away from the problem and let you think more clearly and logically. Another thing is to just remove yourself from the place/person/situation that causes you stress and go for a walk. Sometimes, a cold water splash in the face can help.\n\nOn the other hand, if you are constantly stressed, from the moment you open your eyes until you go to sleep, or if your stress levels create obstacles in your life, you need to dig deeper into the problem because, as good as the above advice is, it won’t eliminate it. Have you considered therapy?\n\n****\n\n## Plastic Asks: I want to have Botox.\n\n_“What do you think about Botox?”_\n\n## The Gal Answers\n\n![Botox and Sleepless Nights](https://assets.workingal.com/Botox_and_Sleepless_Nights_3_52483eee5a.webp)\n\nWhat do I think, or what do you think? I would say go for it if you feel you need it!\n\n****\n\n## D. Asks: What is beauty?\n\n_“My question is more theoretical and not so fix my problem. With all those social media beautiful people who constantly post themselves, I wonder what is beauty? What are the beauty standards we should follow? And if we all followed specific rules to be beautiful, wouldn’t it be a bit boring since we’d all look the same?”_\n\n## The Gal Answers\n\n![Botox and Sleepless Nights](https://assets.workingal.com/Botox_and_Sleepless_Nights_2_7352ddbf36.webp)\n\nIf you are trying to define beauty only using social media as a context, then you are leaving behind a large part of history and a lot of discussion about this issue. Beauty standards have evolved significantly throughout history, often reflecting societal values, cultural norms, and economic conditions. What you think is beautiful from your point of view, experiences, and societal background, a person on the other edge of the world would probably laugh. Not because it’s funny or you lack taste but because beauty does not follow specific guidelines. It has formed according to people’s beliefs, aesthetics, and experiences. Just because, at this time in history, a particular standard of beauty is followed by a large majority of people, it doesn’t mean that we all agree with this and that it’s somehow the right one. Actually, there is no right or wrong.\n\nHistorically speaking, the question of whether beauty is objective or subjective has persisted for centuries as a philosophical debate. You can read [this](https://www.faithonview.com/beauty-and-more-a-systematic-approach-to-reconciling-aesthetic-categories/) and [this](https://research.luc.edu/media/lucedu/psychology/pdfs/Download%20PDF-4.pdf) to gain some more insight on the matter.\n\nAlso, even if we all followed the same rules/guidelines/routines, we wouldn’t be the same; each one is undeniably unique. By the way, how realistic are these beauty standards nowadays? AI has done an incredible job of making us believe that flawless faces are real. They are not.\n\n****\n\n## Sleepless Asks: I can’t sleep.\n\n_“I can’t sleep regular hours, and I feel tired all day. I don’t think that I’m stressed, but I can’t keep a regular sleep schedule. What do I do?”_\n\n## The Gal Answers\n\n![Botox and Sleepless Nights](https://assets.workingal.com/Botox_and_Sleepless_Nights_1_c55db959a7.webp)\n\nI suggest that you read [this](https://www.workingal.com/articles/5-tips-to-sleep-better) and [this](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-to-get-the-most-out-of-your-sleep). I haven’t been in this job for a long time, but it is a great opportunity and I’m generally happy here, apart from the said colleague. I know that they have been with the company for a long time and for this reason, I don’t want to make a big deal out of it. I really don’t know what to do and I am thinking that maybe I should start looking for another job, even though I like this so much. Any tips?”_\n\n## The Gal Answers\n\n![ask the gals column.webp](https://assets.workingal.com/ask_the_gals_column_1ca87902b6.webp)\n\nHey, Sam! Unfortunately, this seems indeed to be an uncomfortable situation, especially when you haven’t established yourself in the new job. However, what you need to keep in mind is that having to deal with a competitive colleague is very common and, from my personal experience, at the end of the day, it doesn’t worth it. So, to give you a more realistic approach, what you should do is first of all to relax and accept the fact that their are competitive. Now, having that in mind, you can assess the situation and understand whether they are competitive and actually causing problem to others or it’s something they enjoy to motivate them. Try to monitor their behavior and whether this is a pattern.\n\nIf it’s actually their **modus operandi**, aka they are there to give you a hard time, then having a straightforward conversation with them could minimize the problem. You don’t have to argue with them, just express your concerns and state (in a cordial and professional manner) that you are doing what you have to do for the company’s benefit and your personal aspirations follow. They will get the message and, if they are smart, they will understand that you are not willing to go personal.\n\nIn general, competitive employees are pretty much everywhere and the best thing you should do is focus on your work. A chat may help; it may not. Eitherway, you do your job, keep being excited for the opportunity, and -believe me- your supervisor or manager knows.\n\nIf the situation gets out of hand, though, I would address the issue to **HR** or to a **manager**, just to be clear and have the necessary support.\n\nDon’t stress a lot, and enjoy your professional journey; don’t let one person define your next professional step. If you are to leave your job, do it because it’s something you want and something that will take you to the next level. I hope this helps!\n\n****\n\n## Bethany Asks: Do I Want To Work With My Husband?\n\n_“I recently had an offer to work to the company that my husband works. It is a great job opportunity and the salary is more than enough. My concern is that in case I accept this, I will be working closely with my husband and I am afraid that this is going to cause problems, not only at work but also at home, considering that we will be spending all day together. It’s a tough call since, in my current position, even though I like my job, the remuneration is not enough for what I am doing and the new job would definitely upgrade our family’s income. Will it, though, ruin my relationship with my husband?”_\n\n## The Gal Answers\n\n![ask the gals column.webp](https://assets.workingal.com/ask_the_gals_column_a9c49fd889.webp)\n\nFirst of all, congratulations on the job offer! It’s nice to hear that there are opportunities out there! Now, to answer your question, you need to have this **conversation** with your husband. You didn’t mention his opinion on the matter. Does he think that this is a good idea? Is he positive of working with you? Is it something that you both wanted or he is reluctant as you are? It seems that you skipped the most important part in the equation: **discussing** with him.\n\nIt’s better to have an honest discussion and understand his **intentions**, and then you can make a more informed decision. For instance, if he believes that this is a great opportunity and you shouldn’t miss it,then it will be easier for both of you to set some boundaries from the very beginning to avoid friction and arguments in the future.\n\nOn the other hand, if he is negative in working with you, then you know how to approach the offer, and decide whether it’s beneficial. But, before you do anything, talk with your husband and make a decision based on the **outcome of your chat**. Your concerns are legit and this is why you need to address them with the person on the other side of the conversation. Whatever you decide, make sure it makes you feel comfortable and that you set your own rules. I hope this helps!\n\n****\n\n## Feminist Asks: Sexism At First Sight\n\n_“Hello to the Working Gal Team! So, I am convinced that we live in a very sexist society and that we have all been victims of sexism. However, since I am done spending my time with sexist people, I was wondering whether there is a way to identify them before we need to spend even an hour with them. I get that nobody is going to be like “hey, I think that women are inferior to men and you should all go home” but are there any other subtle red flags that could prevent us from having to put up with such behaviors in the future? I know that sometimes it’s on the little things, and there are not a lot of signs, but are we doomed to coexist with them? Any thoughts/signs/tips I can work on?_\n\n## The Gal Answers\n\n![ask the gals column.webp](https://assets.workingal.com/ask_the_gals_column_98e21a5721.webp)\n\nHey Feminist! I understand that you must have had some unfortunate experiences with sexism. You are right to wonder, as sexism is ubiquitous.\n\nUnfortunately, there is no magic wand that could identify a **sexist with no trouble**, but there are a couple of things you can do. In early phases, exploratory discussions about other persons, more theoretical and distant, are indicative. For instance, when they casually slut-shaming a female celebrity or show that even though they desire her, on the other hand, they despise her, then, there you go; this is a terrible sign of misogyny.\n\nAlso, a good criterion is their opinion on women's self-determination over their bodies: the right to **abortion** or the attitude towards the choice of childbearing or breastfeeding. Other ominous signs that you are dealing with a sexist man are perceptions that fall into the ownership over women. For instance, excessive possessiveness and jealousy are not passion and love; they are the \"right\" of the master over his slave, aka the woman and is a clear sign that the man is sexist. Also, ask them about their feelings toward financially successful women; in general, the economic subordination of the woman is a clear sign that this man is not going to feel good about a financially **independent** woman.\n\nAs you can see, **no general rule** applies to uncovering sexism, but the good news is that the signs are easy to see if you are careful and don't get carried away and attribute them to interest. Orthorexia or 'orthorexia nervosa' is consequently classified as **Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS)**, i.e., still atypical and of alarming proportions. Usually, people suffering from these disorders believe that they do not have an eating disorder and, therefore, do not deserve the help of a specialist. EDNOS also requires preoccupation and concern about body shape and size, which are related to the person's self-confidence. It is less clear whether there is a movement of the individual from EDNOS to the classic forms of **psychogenic anorexia** and **psychogenic bulimia**.\n\n# What is orthorexia?\n\nThe term orthorexia comes from the Greek word ortho, which means right/correct and appetite. It is characterized by an obsessive obsession with biologically **\"clean\"** or proper, healthy food, leading to significant dietary restrictions. Its main characteristics are the **compulsive avoidance** of \"unhealthy\" foods such as sugar, salt, caffeine, alcohol, sweets, fried foods, wheat, animal fat, soy, corn, and dairy.\n\n# What are the characteristics of an orthorexic?\n\n![orthorexia nervosa 1.jpg](https://assets.workingal.com/orthorexia_nervosa_1_5be6371d3c.jpg)\n\nPeople who suffer from orthorexia show _an obsessive focus on healthy eating_, by taking special care of their diet and then perpetuate an obsession or fixation on restrictive food **in terms of quality**. They remove fats from their diet, eat foods that do not contain additives and fats, and eventually develop a mania against eating **\"bad\"** food. It is essential to distinguish that those who follow a way of eating with fully conscious choices that happen to be healthy, such as strict [vegetarianism](https://www.workingal.com/articles/my-life-as-a-vegetarian), are not classified as people suffering from orthorexia. In addition, individuals usually adopt **antisocial behavior**, as they cannot easily manage dietary issues in the presence of others.\n\n# How does an orthorexic person behave?\n\nThere are specific ways to understand whether a person shows signs of orthorexia. Below, there are some of the most common symptoms of orthorexia that can reveal this particular eating behavior.\n\n- They think about nutrition for more than **three hours a day** and plan their meals several days before eating them, showing an obsession with their meals and eating habits.\n- The meal's nutritional value is more important than the **pleasure** of eating it.\n- They feel a strong sense of **confidence** when they eat healthily.\n- They follow certain **rules** scrupulously and take great pride in their work. In many cases, the more challenging the rules, the greater their satisfaction with following them.\n- When their diet goes wrong, they **punish** themselves, e.g., \"I dared to eat a bowl of chips, so no food for me for the rest of the day.”\n- They avoid foods with **artificial** colors, flavors or preservatives, pesticides, genetic modification, unhealthy fats and added sugar or salt.\n\n![orthorexia nervosa 2.jpg](https://assets.workingal.com/orthorexia_nervosa_2_86166c39a6.jpg)\n\n- The utensils they use must meet certain **requirements** such as a high degree of sterilization.\n- Feelings of guilt, disgust and guilt will follow after any deviation from the rules.\n- They find it difficult to enjoy the **social aspects of food**, such as going out to dinner with friends or even accepting an invitation to a family meal. The strict rules surrounding food mean that eating out is increasingly restricted.\n- They remember and describe their 'right' and 'healthy' choices in detail.\n\n# What are the warning signs of orthorexia?\n\nAccording to the National Centre for Eating Disorders in the UK, the warning signs of orthorexia include **compulsory checking** of ingredients on food labels, exclusion in the variety of foods so that high levels of psychological distress are experienced when there are no _'healthy'_ foods in the diet, heavy use of social networking accounts and blogs. People with orthorexia usually exclude **processed grains** and added sugars and may cut out gluten, dairy, soy and other foods or whole food groups. In severe cases, orthorexia eventually leads to malnutrition when essential nutrients are eliminated from the diet. It does not mean, of course, that a person with orthorexia is **thin or skinny**. In fact, many of those are obese individuals.\n\n# How will you know if you have orthorexia?\n\n### Dr. Steve Bratman, the first person to describe orthorexia in 1997 states \n\n#### _\"A person who spends their days eating oats can feel as holy as if they had dedicated their entire life to helping the homeless.\"_\n\nThus the emphasis is placed on devout, almost ascetic adherence to a particular diet with devotion, and thus the person feels **\"pure\"**. In contrast, in the possibility of regression in eating behaviour, feelings of **guilt** and inadequacy are experienced. This behavior is similar to that of individuals suffering from Psychogenic Anorexia Nervosa or Psychogenic Bulimia Nervosa, except that those people are concerned about the **quantity** of food they consume, whereas people with orthorexia are concerned about the quality of food.\n\n# The Bratman test for orthorexia\n\nThe Bratman Orthorexia Test (BOT) is a tool developed by Dr. Steven Bratman, who first identified orthorexia nervosa. It's designed to help identify individuals who may be at risk for orthorexia nervosa, which is characterized by an obsession with \"healthy\" eating. It assesses beliefs, thought patterns, and behaviors related to food and nutrition. \n\nThe original BOT is a self-assessment consisting of a series of questions with _\"yes\"_ or _\"no\"_ answers. It examines how much time and emotional energy a person invests in their dietary restrictions.\n\n_Do you spend more than 3 hours a day thinking about what you will eat?_\n\n_Do you plan your meals several days in advance?_\n\n_Is the nutritional value of your meal more important than the pleasure of eating it?_\n\n_Has your quality of life decreased as the quality of your diet has increased?_\n\n_Have you become more strict with yourself recently?_\n\n![orthorexia nervosa 3.jpg](https://assets.workingal.com/orthorexia_nervosa_3_80809fa003.jpg)\n\n_Does your confidence increase when you eat healthily?_\n\n_Have you stopped eating the foods you used to enjoy in order to eat the \"right\" foods?_\n\n_Does your diet not easily allow you to eat out, taking you away from your family and friends?_\n\n_Do you feel guilty when you \"mess up\" your diet?_\n\n_Do you feel good about yourself and that you are in control when you eat healthy?_\n\nIf you answered positively in **4-5** **positive** **answers**, it is recommended that you take a break from worrying about your diet and visit a specialist ASAP. If there are more positive answers, then dealing with good nutrition has reached the point of obsession. Orthorexia needs to be approached by a **multidisciplinary** team. The cooperation of specialized therapists—both a psychiatrist or psychologist and a dietician or physician—is essential.\n\n# Orthorexia and treatment\n\nOrthorexia is one of the most common **atypical eating disorders** and the most difficult to diagnose.\n\nPsychological treatment generally converges towards those of anorexia nervosa and obsessive-compulsive behavior. However, as the experts note, the individual's **decision** and commitment to change their eating behavior is more important than the method used to achieve change. A prerequisite for this to happen, however, is that the individual recognizes that the way they think and act is a real **obstacle** in their life and that it **impacts** something that they consider to have more substantial value and meaning.\n\nOrthorexia is a serious disordered eating pattern that can have **serious mental and physical health consequences** since it impacts their mental health and people who suffer from it need professional help. The main treatment is psychotherapy. To better frame the treatment, a registered nutritionist can debunk misinformation they may believe about what looks like a healthy eating pattern and help re-educate them to improve their relationship with food.","eating-disorders-what-is-orthorexia-nervosa-and-what-you-need-to-know","orthorexia, disordered eating, eating disorders, orthorexia meaning, what is orthorexia","Obi Ndefo's death brought on the spotlight orthorexia, a serious eating disorder that can affect both men and women and has serious consequences. Check out the recent article we were quoted in: [Fall Dinner Party Menu.](https://www.rent.com/blog/fall-dinner-party-menu/)!\n****\n\nAs the days begin to get darker and the air becomes cooler, it’s no surprise if you want to start staying in more. Autumn is truly the season for embracing your inner homebody, cozying up, and inviting your loved ones over to share a meal. Unsure what to cook? Don’t worry! We’ve compiled the perfect fall dinner party menu for you whether you’re hosting in your new [rental home in Tacoma, WA](https://www.rent.com/washington/tacoma-houses), [apartment in Minneapolis, MN](https://www.apartmentguide.com/apartments/Minnesota/Minneapolis/), or [home in Boca Raton, FL](https://www.redfin.com/city/1903/FL/Boca-Raton). Complete with mocktails, soups, salads, gluten-free desserts, and hosting tips, there’s truly something here for everyone!\n\n## Delightful drinks\n\nWhile you could always go with apple cider or a bottle of wine, why not change it up and make some cocktails? After all, mixology could just be your new fall hobby!\n\nPerfect for all ages and every party guest, consider making mocktails so that everyone is included. In fact, “Non-alcoholic mocktail options are on the rise as more and more people are trying to reduce their alcohol consumption, have cut it out completely, or can’t drink due to health issues,” says Gabby Monahan, owner of Evergreen Curated.\n\n![fall dinner party 2.jpg](https://assets.workingal.com/fall_dinner_party_2_d84ba9aa1f.jpg)\n\nWe recommend trying their [Apple Cider Spritz](https://evergreencurated.com/blogs/recipes/fall-mocktails) mocktail for the perfect transition to fall from an aperol spritz summer. Not only is this drink delicious, but offering non-alcoholic options is a great and easy to be a better host: “As someone who doesn’t drink, it’s the best feeling arriving at an event and finding that the host has gone above and beyond to offer mocktails,” notes Gabby.\n\nIf you do want to go with an alcoholic drink, opt for a classic daiquiri. [Ten To One Rum](https://www.tentoonerum.com/)’s blend of both Dominican and Jamaican rums are “ideal for adding a touch of sophistication to any fall gathering,” says Ten To One’s chief of staff Shivani Pandya. This refined and refreshing drink is sure to pair well with whatever of the upcoming bites you choose to serve up!\n\n## Amazing appetizers\n\nAfter drinks, it’s time to bring out the appetizers. Having shareable plates is a great way to get your guests to mingle as well as bide time for the mains to finish cooking.\n\nTo start, you truly cannot go wrong with a [French Cheese Board](https://lechefswife.com/how-to-make-a-french-cheese-board/). Le Chef’s Wife’s Anina Belle Gia recommends setting out the board an hour before guests arrive so the cheese has time to warm to room temperature and so the guests have something to nibble on right away. “It helps take the edge off their hunger and also buys you time to finish up any last minute details,” notes Anina. A cheese board can truly be a work of art, but the key is a variation of cheeses. Anina likes to serve three different types: “one hard, one soft, one stinky (such as a Comté, a goat cheese, and a blue cheese.” Regardless of what cheeses you end up choosing, “Just make sure not to put cheese and charcuterie on the same plate,” reminded Anina.\n\nHow about wrapping your cheese in puff pastry? Ten Pound Cake Company’s [savory roasted sweet potato puff pastry turnovers](https://tenpoundcakecompany.com/savory-roast-sweet-potato-puff-pastry-turnovers/) will have you making an appetizer that’s “filled with a delicious sweet potato mixture and perfectly combined with caramelized onions and brie cheese,” says owner Julie Swift. These bites are truly the ultimate comfort food appetizer, ideal for parties both large and small.\n\n## Scrumptious salads\n\nWhether you’re having a separate salad course or are serving up a bowl family style, we have three great autumnal salad options for you!\n\n“To make a great fall-inspired salad, start by combining hearty fall veggies (like brussels sprouts or sweet potatoes), with greens of your choice and lots of fresh toppings,” recommends Shannon Lyon of [Plum Street Collective](https://plumstreetcollective.com/). Her fall harvest salad includes roasted brussels sprouts, pomegranates, bacon, goat cheese, pecans, and is finished with a sweet mustard dressing.\n\n![fall dinner party 1.jpg](https://assets.workingal.com/fall_dinner_party_1_99bca8888e.jpg)\n\nIf you’re more in the mood for sweet potatoes, try her autumn arugula salad that features warm sweet potatoes, shredded chicken, arugula, burrata, pecans, and corn. “The pecans add the perfect crunch and the corn adds just the right amount of fresh sweetness,” says Shannon. Whichever salad you choose, both are sure to please, but just “try to include some kind…that brings in different fall flavors and colors,” reminds Shannon.\n\nYou can’t go wrong with a chopped salad, but swap in some fall favorites to make it seasonal. Rachel Tiemeyer, cookbook author and co-creator of the popular food blog [Thriving Home](https://thrivinghomeblog.com/), suggests adding tart apples, sweet dried cranberries, toasted pecans, and an apple cider vinaigrette for that fall flair. “The ingredients are simple, fresh, and provide a contrast of textures and flavors,” making it the perfect side, says Rachel.\n\n## Superb soups\n\nFall is one-hundred percent soup season, so we had to include a couple bowls of hearty goodness.\n\n### “Fall is here, and so are those cozy dinner nights with our loved ones. What is better to accompany an autumnal evening than a wholesome, tasty velvet soup with leek, potato, and green apple?” asks [The Working Gal](https://www.workingal.com/). “This soup not only is the perfect appetizer for your dinner party, but will also start your meal off on the coziest autumnal note.”\n\nAnother great soup option is [Green Weddings Shoes](https://greenweddingshoes.com/)’ roasted butternut squash soup. Green Weddings Shoes’ Jen Campbell recommends serving it up in mini pumpkin bowls as “The rich, creamy flavors paired with the presentation make for a festive and cozy starter that sets the tone for an unforgettable fall gathering.” For garnish, she also suggests adding “a sprinkle of toasted pumpkin seeds for a satisfying crunch and an extra touch of seasonal charm.”\n\n## Magnificent mains: The heart of your fall dinner party menu\n\nMoving onto mains, continue to tie in the fall warmth with a decadent butter chicken dish complete with spicy flavors and an irresistible aroma. [Tripping on Earth](https://trippingonearth.com/)’s recipe is for sure to be a crowd-pleaser. “\\[The\\] richness from the butter, comforting warm spices, and juicy tender chicken, \\[lends its way to\\] an amazing mouthfeel and indulging essence to your fall dinner party,” says Moksh, blogger of Tripping on Earth.\n\nIf butter chicken isn’t your cup of tea, “Consider seasonal offerings like red wine braised short ribs, maple glazed salmon, pumpkin ravioli, or roasted spatcock chicken,” says Sarah Wilkins of [Nutritionist Mom](https://nutritionistmom.com/). A good rule of thumb is that “each dish should invite new tastes and textures, while complementing the overall cuisine and season of your main course,” notes Sarah. It might be helpful to start with the main and then build the rest of the menu (appetizers, salad, dessert, etc.) around the center dish.\n\n## Decadent desserts\n\nSpeaking of desserts, we have four great options for your perfect fall dinner party. Since fall really is the season for baking, you could make them all instead of picking just one.\n\n![fall dinner party.jpg](https://assets.workingal.com/fall_dinner_party_aa00c0598f.jpg)\n\nOur first recommendation is none other than an apple crisp. A true fall classic, this dessert is both effortless and impressive. “It requires minimal baking skills and only takes a short time to prepare. You can quickly assemble it and pop it in the oven just before your guests arrive, allowing you to enjoy the evening without the stress of preparing a complicated dish. Plus, it requires minimal cleanup, making it a truly stress-free option,” notes [Pretty Delicious Life](https://prettydeliciouslife.com/) blogger Kimberly Cauti.\n\nAnother great apple dessert option is [Conservamome](https://conservamome.com/)’s apple pie cheesecake bars. You can use a store-bought or homemade apple filling for this recipe, but either way your guests are sure to love this treat. With its amazing combination of flavors and textures, consider serving this delectable at your fall dinner party.\n\nOur last apple dessert recommendation comes from an easy yet delicious mix! [Josie's Best](https://josiesbestgf.com/) offers an incredible gluten free apple bread mix perfect for any dinner party. “The bread's classic texture and real apple pieces make it a perfect pairing for after dinner conversations over a hot cup of coffee or apple cider,” notes owner Josie Johnson. She also suggests putting the loaf in the oven an hour before guests arrive: “The delicious smell of baked apples and cinnamon will fill your home, creating an inviting atmosphere for your guests and by the time dinner is over it will be cooled and ready to enjoy!”\n\nIf you’re not into apples, how about pumpkins? This fall flavor staple pairs well with, you guessed it, cream cheese. While you could always do a pumpkin cheesecake or the like, [Just As Tasty](https://www.justastasty.com/)’s Taleen recommends “topping off a batch of extra soft pumpkin cookies or irresistible pumpkin bars with some perfectly rich cream cheese frosting for a special finishing touch.”\n\n## Helpful hosting tips\n\nNow that you have all of your dishes figured out, time to think about hosting! From dinner scapes to tips to keep your evening as easy as possible, we have you covered.\n\nAnina recommends preparing as much as possible in advance. “Plan out your menu so that you are serving dishes that can be made earlier in the day or even days in advance so that you are spending quality time with your guests instead of disappearing into the kitchen,” says Anina. Other things to do before your guests arrive is to set the table, have an empty dishwasher so cleanup is easiest, and prepare a playlist in advance. As for the table itself, Anina suggests “\\[leaving\\] a pitcher of water on the table within easy access of your guests \\[to\\] help to minimize the time that you spend away from the table.”\n\n![fall dinner party.jpg](https://assets.workingal.com/blog_900x550_19_c98b2e3876.jpg)\n\nMoving onto decorations, opting for a fall color scheme is of course a great and classic choice, but consider going beyond the colors and adding in natural elements. [Take Two Tapas](https://www.taketwotapas.com/)’ Jennifer Stewart likes to use flowers, leaves, and twigs in her centerpieces. For example, she adds a few sprigs of leaves in the center of the table surrounding a candle for the perfect centerpiece. \n\nShe says, “To complete the look in my dishes, I add fresh herb sprigs to serving dishes and freeze fall fruit to use as ice cubes in my drinks. They add color to the glass, keep it cold longer, and don’t water down the drink,” adds Jennifer. Try not to stress too much about the decor, simply “Look around and see what natural elements you can use to make your fall party a hit,” says Jennifer.\n\nRegardless of what salad, soup, appetizer, or color scheme you choose, we hope we’ve prepared and inspired you for your fall dinner party this season. “Most of all, remember that your guests are coming to your home to spend time with you. Keep your menu simple with familiar favorites so that you can truly enjoy their company,” reminds Anina. If that sounds painfully familiar, the frustration and exhaustion you are feeling are entirely valid. There is truly nothing more maddening than putting real effort, time, and focus into your daily habits without seeing the payoff you worked so hard for.\n\nBefore you throw your hands up or assume you are doing something wrong, take a breath. Your body is not a basic calorie calculator; it is an intricate, highly intelligent system that constantly requires energy to fuel every single vital function—from balancing your hormones and powering your organs to cell repair and daily focus.\n\nThis entire internal powerhouse is your metabolism. It is the true driver behind not just how your body manages weight, but how you feel, how you function, and how much energy you actually have each day.\n\n## What Exactly Is Metabolism?\n\nStrip away the buzzwords and trends, and the core definition is surprisingly straightforward: metabolism is the continuous series of biochemical reactions occurring within your cells that convert the food you eat into usable cellular fuel.\n\nThink of it as your body’s internal engine. That energy doesn’t just sit there; it actively powers every single process keeping you alive and functioning—from circulating your blood and regulating body temperature to repairing tissue and maintaining steady focus. When your metabolism runs efficiently, your body knows precisely how to utilize that incoming fuel, keeping your weight balanced and your daily energy rock solid.\n\nYet, we have all been there: you eat clean, stay active, and do everything right, but your system still feels sluggish and uncooperative.\n\n### Why does that happen?\n\nThe truth is, your metabolic rate isn't just about calories in and calories out. According to leading nutritionists, there are four key culprits that can quietly throw the entire system off balance.\n\n## 1\\. Severe Calorie Restriction & Crash Diets\n\nYour body’s primary instinct is survival, and it is exceptionally smart at adapting to whatever environment you create for it.\n\nWhen you drastically slash your calorie intake or jump into an aggressive crash diet, your body doesn't see a fitness goal—it perceives a famine. In response, it immediately hits the brakes, downshifting your resting metabolic rate to hoard every single scrap of available energy.\n\nThis survival response makes sustained weight loss nearly impossible over time. Even worse, prolonged under-fueling often forces the body to break down precious lean muscle tissue for fuel. Because muscle mass is your greatest metabolic asset—burning calories even when you are completely at rest—losing it only weakens your engine further, setting you up for an uphill battle the moment you try to eat normally again.\n\n![slow metabolism.jpg](https://assets.workingal.com/slow_metabolism_36f1e80b0c.jpg)\n\n### How to fix it:\n\nThe solution starts with abandoning the all-or-nothing mindset in favor of real, sustainable nourishment. Focus on fueling your body with whole, nutrient-dense foods that support your daily vitality rather than running on empty. A big part of keeping your internal engine active is consistency: avoid going longer than three to four hours without food, which prevents sharp blood sugar crashes and reassures your system that it isn't facing a shortage.\n\nIf fat loss is your goal, stick to a slight, moderate calorie deficit instead of an aggressive cut. This allows you to make steady progress without triggering those stubborn metabolic defense alarms. At the same time, pay attention to how you assemble your plate. Learning how to properly pair lean proteins, healthy fats, and fiber-rich carbohydrates maximizes nutrient absorption and keeps you genuinely satisfied between meals. When in doubt, consult a [registered dietitian](https://www.workingal.com/articles/office-hours-flora-giatra-registered-nutritionist) who can assess your unique baseline and create a personalized plan tailored specifically to your body's needs.\n\n## 2\\. Hormonal Imbalances\n\nHormones act as your body’s chemical messengers, and when it comes to metabolic rate, they hold massive sway over how efficiently you burn energy, store fat, and feel on a day-to-day basis.\n\nWhen that delicate balance gets thrown off, your metabolism is often the first system to take the hit. A prime example is hypothyroidism, where an underactive thyroid fails to produce sufficient levels of thyroid hormones—the exact signals responsible for setting your metabolic pace. The result is often an abrupt slowdown in calorie burning, stubborn weight gain, and overwhelming, persistent fatigue that no amount of coffee seems to fix.\n\nSimilarly, conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) can significantly alter your metabolic landscape. Driven by insulin resistance and elevated androgen levels, PCOS impairs your cells' ability to process glucose efficiently. Instead of utilizing food for steady fuel, the body tends to shuttle that energy directly into fat storage, making conventional weight management feel like an exhausting, uphill fight no matter how clean your diet looks on paper.\n\n### How to fix it\n\nIf your body feels continuously out of sync despite consistent habits, stop trying to power through with willpower alone and consult your doctor. Suspected hormonal disruptions require a clear clinical picture, so request a comprehensive panel to check your thyroid function, fasting glucose, insulin levels, and reproductive hormone profile. Early diagnosis and targeted treatment—whether through specific medical protocols, strategic supplementation, or targeted lifestyle adjustments—can dramatically turn things around. Getting your hormone levels properly balanced eliminates the hidden friction in your system, allowing your metabolism to function normally and making weight management achievable again.\n\n## 3\\. Chronic Sleep Deprivation\n\nQuality sleep is not a luxury or an afterthought; it is a non-negotiable pillar of your metabolic health. When you consistently cut corners on rest, you trigger an immediate biochemical shift in the hormones that dictate your hunger cues and appetite control.\n\nSpecifically, [skimping on sleep](https://www.workingal.com/articles/brain-dump-before-sleep) causes your body to spike levels of ghrelin, the hormone responsible for signaling hunger, while simultaneously suppressing leptin, the hormone that signals fullness and satisfaction. This chemical mismatch leaves you feeling perpetually unsatisfied, no matter how much you eat. Even worse, sleep deprivation dulls the prefrontal cortex, meaning the part of the brain responsible for impulse control, while ramping up cravings for quick, calorie-dense carbohydrates and sugars. Trying to stick to a balanced diet on four or five hours of sleep is not a test of discipline; it is an active biochemical battle against your own physiology.\n\n![slow metabolism.jpg](https://assets.workingal.com/slow_metabolism_7ea5bad75c.jpg)\n\n### How to fix it\n\nTreat your sleep with the same non-negotiable dedication you give your nutrition and movement. Make it a non-negotiable habit to secure seven to nine hours of restorative, uninterrupted sleep every single night. Start by dialing in a relaxing evening wind-down routine—step away from glowing screens at least an hour before bed, dim the overhead lighting, and give your nervous system time to shift out of high alert. Transform your bedroom into an actual sanctuary optimized for rest: keep the room cool, completely dark, and quiet. When you prioritize high-quality sleep, you give your hunger and satiety hormones the chance to reset naturally, removing the constant cravings and setting your metabolism up to function at its best all day long.\n\n## 4\\. Inadequate Lean Muscle Mass\n\nLean muscle is your body’s most active metabolic currency. At rest, a pound of muscle burns far more calories simply existing and repairing itself than a pound of fat tissue does. The more lean mass you carry, the higher your baseline metabolic rate, meaning your body naturally torches more energy around the clock—even while you are sitting at your desk or sleeping.\n\nThe challenge comes with time and lifestyle. As we age, our bodies naturally begin to shed muscle tissue through a process known as sarcopenia, which is often accelerated by sedentary habits and under-eating protein. When you lose that metabolically active tissue, your overall daily calorie burn drops right along with it. This silent, gradual loss of muscle is one of the primary reasons many people notice their metabolism slowing down over the years, making weight maintenance feel increasingly difficult even when their food intake has not changed at all.\n\n### How to fix it\nThe key to protecting and ramping up your metabolic rate is actively training your muscles. Make regular resistance training a consistent part of your weekly routine, aiming for at least two to three targeted sessions per week that challenge all your major muscle groups. Whether you prefer working with free weights, resistance bands, or high-intensity bodyweight movements, applying consistent mechanical tension tells your body to build and retain dense, metabolically expensive tissue. Pair those workouts with adequate daily protein intake to supply the essential building blocks for repair, ensuring your muscle mass stays strong, functional, and continuously firing up your metabolism well into the future.\n\n## The Bottom Line\nA vibrant, fully functioning metabolism is never about one single miracle fix, extreme workout, or rigid food rule. It is the direct result of a finely tuned ecosystem of daily habits working in tandem. By fueling your body with consistent, nutrient-dense meals, challenging your muscles through regular movement, prioritizing deep and restorative sleep, and proactively keeping daily stress in check, you create an internal environment where your metabolism can genuinely thrive.
