They're classics for a reason.\n\n### Home Alone\n\n![christmas movie list](https://assets.workingal.com/christmas_movie_list_10_38732c11c5.jpg)\n\nWe can't talk about Christmas without mentioning Kevin and his family in this iconic 1990 classic. Home Alone is, quite simply, one of the most Christmas-y, wholesome comedies that will keep you joyful and carefree during the entire holiday season—and for good reason.\n\nThe film follows 8-year-old Kevin McCallister, who accidentally gets left behind when his entire family travels for the holidays, only to discover that two burglars are targeting his home. What unfolds is a masterclass in both comedy and heart: Kevin must defend his beloved home using creativity, wit, and a series of hilariously elaborate traps.\n\nThe film works because it's not just funny—it's touching. Beneath the slapstick humor is a genuine story about family, belonging, and the realization that home is about the people you love, not the physical place. Beyond the comedy, Home Alone has become a cultural institution. Its iconic moments are quoted year after year, its catchphrases are instantly recognizable, and its production values remain impressive even decades later.\n\n#### Where to Watch: Disney+, available to rent on Amazon Prime, Apple TV\n\n### Elf (2003)\nA beloved Christmas classic that continues to be enjoyed by audiences of all ages, and it cannot be excluded from any Christmas movie list. Will Ferrell's performance as Buddy the Elf—a human raised by elves at the North Pole who travels to New York City to find his biological father—is nothing short of magical.\nThe film perfectly balances absurdist comedy with genuine heart. Buddy's childlike wonder and complete lack of cynicism in the face of modern city life is both hilarious and surprisingly moving. The scene where he eats spaghetti covered in maple syrup and candy? Unforgettable. The moment he believes in Santa even when no one else does? You'll feel it in your chest.\n#### Where to Watch: HBO Max, available to rent on most platforms\n\n### It's a Wonderful Life (1946)\nA 1946 film that has earned its place among Christmas classics and is worth watching at least once every holiday season. Love Actually weaves together multiple love stories in London during the holidays, from the Prime Minister falling for his assistant to a widower helping his stepson declare love at the airport.\n\nYes, some storylines are problematic by today's standards (we're looking at you, Rick and Karen plot). But the film's genuine moments of love, the iconic airport finale, and that opening montage about love being everywhere... it still works. The cue card scene alone has been referenced, parodied, and recreated countless times because it captures something deeply romantic about grand gestures and unspoken feelings.\n\n#### Where to Watch: Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Peacock\n\n### Serendipity (2001)\nThe core of this movie revolves around the age-old question: do we control our destinies, or are our lives guided by unseen forces? Serendipity is a charming and thought-provoking film that explores the power of love and the mysterious ways of fate.\n\n![christmas movie list](https://assets.workingal.com/christmas_movie_list_2_4ac904d689.jpg)\n\nJohn Cusack and Kate Beckinsale meet cute at Bloomingdale's while Christmas shopping, share a magical evening, and then leave their reunion to fate. Since her horrific story was brought to light, it has inspired millions of people around the world, not only victims of **sexual abuse** but also non-victims, and she hopes her case will change French legislation regarding rape and consent. _\"It's time for the macho, patriarchal society that downplays the importance of rape to change,\"_ Giselle Pellico said in a statement at the trial that began on September 2, 2024, in Mazan. A few weeks ago, she was the shocking cover of [German Vogue](https://www.the-independent.com/life-style/gisele-pelicot-vogue-cover-germany-france-rape-trial-b2653832.html) on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and we see her on the [BBC list alongside other women](https://www.bbc.com/mediacentre/2024/bbc-reveals-100-women-2024) who want this world to change, in every way possible.\n\n**Today, she got the justice she deserved.** Dominique Pelicot, her ex-husband who repeatedly drugged and raped her over the course of almost a decade has been found guilty of all the charges against him. He was found guilty of raping Gisèle Pelicot and sentenced to 20 years in prison, which is the maximum sentence for the charge of aggravated rape. \n\nHowever, it wasn’t only him. He would invite dozens of men he met online to their home to rape her while she was unconscious of the pills that he slipped to her drinks or food. The men were often strangers to her. Today, the court in Mazan found all 51 defendants guilty in the case. Dominique Pelicot was sentenced to 20 years in prison, the maximum sentence. The other defendants received sentences ranging from 3 to 15 years. \n\n_\"Mr Pellico, you are guilty of the aggravated rape of Gisèle Pelicot,\"_ said the president of the Avignon criminal court, Roger Arata. According to reports, Dominique Pelicot will not be eligible for parole until he has served two-thirds of his sentence. At this point, it should be noted that all 51 defendants were charged with serial rape and one of them, Nicolas François, was also charged with **depicting child abuse**. Most of the defendants denied the charges, saying they believed it was a consensual sex game orchestrated by the couple.\n\n![gisele pelicot trial vogue](https://assets.workingal.com/gisele_pelicot_trial_vogue_84c4bfaab8.jpg)\n\nAccording to BBC, the defendants were sentenced to sentences lower than those sought by the prosecutor at the arraignment, while Giselle's children, David and Caroline, were clearly disappointed. On December 16, Dominique Pelico begged his family to accept his _\"apology\"_ and hailed Giselle's _\"courage\"_. _\"I would like to start by saluting the courage of my ex-wife,\"_ he had told the Avignon court. _\"I ask her, as well as the rest of my family, to accept my apology.\"_\n\nDespite the severity of the crimes, nearly all of **Gisèle's rapists received lenient sentences**. Six will be released today, having served their time or received suspended sentences. The longest sentence, excluding Dominique's, was 15 years for Romain Vandevelde, who raped Gisèle six times, while we was aware that he was HIV positive. Jean-Pierre Marechal, who raped his own wife using Dominique's methods, was sentenced in 12 years. Gisèle's daughter, Caroline Darian, was stunned by the leniency of the sentences.\n\nHowever, the sentences were not well received by a vast amount of the public. Anne-Cécile Mailfert, president of Fondation des Femmes, denounced the sentences as a _\"disgrace\"_ and a **systemic failure** to protect victims of sexual violence.\n\nHowever, what we should keep from this horror story is that Gisèle Pelicot, by appearing in public and putting a face to the victim, **wants the shame to change sides**. And she has already done so. She wants to fight for all those women who may never be recognized as victims of rape. Her life was destroyed as her husband of decades drugged her with pills he slipped into her food, then raped her and invited other men to molest her body. The holiday season is right by the corner and every year I get frustrated since my -lovely by all means- guests are extremely reluctant to leave the house after dinner, celebrations, etc. and I end up tired, almost asleep on the couch waiting patiently for them to realize that it’s late. They need to leave. Like now. Any ideas?_\n\n## The Gal Answers\n\nExcellent question! Well, it depends on your boundaries, your relationship with your guests, and how much you are inclined to be unpleasant. What usually works is to start tidying up and moving around the house. Also, it’s a good idea to start a conversation on your next day’s plans and start by saying “oh, I have exciting plans for tomorrow, getting up veeeery early for \\[insert -imaginary or not-plan\\].\n\nThese methods are proven to be effective and guests with a sense of social awareness usually get the “go away” hint. Others, may not. So, you have two options: either you wait patiently for them to get tired and leave or you tell them that the party is over and it’s time to get some sleep.\n\nIf you are close to your guests, then they will be ok. Worst case scenario, they won’t coming back to the next gathering. But, at least, the party will be over on time!\n\n\\*\\*\\*\\*\n\n## D. Asks: Holiday Stress\n\n![woman holding gifts and screaming](https://assets.workingal.com/ask_the_gals_column_d00d20c0f2.jpg)\n\n_“Holiday season is here and I feel so stressed that I don’t know what to do. I have some days off work and I could really use the time to rest but I have so many social obligations and so little time to manage them all. What should I do?”_\n\n## The Gal Answers\n\nThat’s a very common problem that pretty much everyone faces. We were taught to please them all, no matter if our mind (and body) say the opposite. I won’t tell you to not stress, but I will tell you that at the end of the day, nothing bad can happen if you don’t show up to a party or gathering. I tried doing it for a year and then I needed a couple of weeks off work to manage to recover. And that in my twenties. In my late thirties I would suggest Netflix favorites and RSVP to events that really warm your soul. Honestly, everyone is so duped these days that they won’t even notice your absence. All good.\n\n\\*\\*\\*\\*\n\n## Money Maker: I don’t believe women make less money than men\n\n![woman throwing money](https://assets.workingal.com/ask_the_gals_column_f3778b8477.jpg)\n\n_“Hello Working Gals! I have a question-statement to make. I think that the belief that women make less money than men is a bit misleading. I believe that both sexes can earn the same amount of money if they have the appropriate skills and that we tend to victimize ourselves in order to have something to complain about.”_\n\n## The Gal Answers\n\nWell, that was not a question but I could really suggest you did some reading on the topic. A simple Google search will show you that _“Although the gender pay gap has narrowed since the signing of the Equal Pay Act of 1963, women earned 82 cents for every dollar a man earns according to 2020 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.”_\n\nSo yes, women do earn less than men. Why? The reasons are multiple and a simple column cannot explain how deep the gap in equal compensation is.\n\nWe have addressed the issue in The Working Gal and I would suggest you read some information [here](https://www.workingal.com/articles/mind-the-gap-the-fight-for-gender-equal-compensation) and [here](https://www.workingal.com/articles/why-women-are-underrepresented-in-leadership-positions).\n\nHowever, there are many places where you can see women earning more than men but these are not the rule nor magically we managed to bridge the gap of compensations only because some businesses took the lead.\n\nThe road is long and if you are in position where you earn more money from your male counterparts, then congratulations but you are the exception!\n\nDemanding equal compensation schemes and addressing the issue is not victimizing ourselves. It’s trying to put us in a position where we are heard and we get what we deserve.\n\n\\*\\*\\*\\*\n\n## Employee of the month Asks:\n\n![woman scolding a colleague](https://assets.workingal.com/ask_the_gals_column_fa46a79b99.jpg)\n\n_“I think my boss doesn’t like me. But what is surprising is that not only have they revolutionized the job market, but they have also created ambiguous feelings; are they fighting for a good cause, or are they rebels without a cause?\n\nAccording to a recent analysis by [Intelligent.com](http://intelligent.com), almost 18% of managers in the United States have said they have considered quitting due to the stress of managing Generation Z employees. This research presents managers' concerns about employees in the younger age frame.\n\nIn addition to executives considering resigning, 27% of managers said they would **avoid hiring Gen Zers** if they could. While their communication skills, time management, and teamwork are the \"expertise\" of this generation, managers argue that young people, especially in recent years, have had fewer opportunities to develop these skills through **conventional** methods. The evidence does not conclude here. \n\n![gen z at work](https://assets.workingal.com/gen_z_at_work_bbe06fdd2c.webp)\n\nAs it turns out, 65% of managers surveyed have had to adjust their management style, while three out of four managers say that compared to other generations, managing Gen Z employees requires more time and resources, and 54% have experienced Gen Z individuals communicating with them in an **inappropriate** tone or manner.\n\nAlso, according to the research findings, 2 in 3 managers report that they adjusted their management Style to accommodate Gen Z employees.\n\n[Hui Nguyen](https://www.intelligent.com/about-us/huy-nguyen/), Chief Education, and Career Development Advisor for Intelligent.com pointed out that _\"Gen Z employees come with stronger technical skills than previous generations but may lack the practical experience gained through traditional work environments. Gen Z's preference for flexibility can drive companies to adopt innovative technologies, streamline processes, and become more agile in today's dynamic digital landscape.\n\nIn another survey of 1,000 managers in the US, 51% said they had experienced **frustration** and 44% **stress** due to managing this age group. Half the managers noted that younger employees cause **tension** because they often demonstrate **poor work ethics** or **overuse their phones**.\n\nWhether this change is for good and whether it will change the job landscape is yet unknown. In humans, these tiny organisms reside in various body parts, including the gut, skin, mouth, and respiratory tract.\n\nAn unhealthy gut microbiome can lead to increased gut permeability, allowing harmful substances like endotoxins to enter the bloodstream. These substances can trigger chronic low-grade **inflammation**, which is linked to the development of visceral fat. Also, chronic inflammation can contribute to insulin resistance, a condition where the body becomes less responsive to insulin, leading to increased blood sugar levels and fat storage.\n\n# How To Improve Your Microbiome?\n\nThe following minor changes can help you improve the microbiome of your gut, hence reduce belly fat.\n\n## Even the slightest change matters\n\nYou probably believe that changing your microbiome will take years, just as it takes years to develop. However, that’s not the case here. What you consume affects the microbiome within 24 hours; the maximum change occurs up to _3 days later_. This means that if you immediately change your dietary habits with more friendly to your microbiome ones, you will have a change in your gut microbiome within 3 days since your microbiome changes day to day and hour to hour.\n\n## Change the gut microbiome through nutrition\n\n![gut health and microbiome](https://assets.workingal.com/gut_health_and_microbiome_0c51050ebd.webp)\n\nIf you want to modify your gut microbiome, the most effective thing to do it is mainly through your diet. If you try to improve it by taking a supplement, you have to engage in taking it every day because the gut bacteria change extremely quickly. On the other hand, if you choose fermented foods, you are \"feeding\" the good gut bacteria and are more likely to maintain the changes in your microbiome.\n\n## Avoid ultra-processed foods\n\nUltra-processed foods are highly connected to our gut health. They are made through industrial production processes, colors, additives, **preservatives** and other artificial ingredients. One of the main concerns regarding UPFs is that their artificial ingredients and the way they are made are not recognized by the body, so the body responds with fat increase and inflammation. Ultra-processed foods also indirectly affect health by altering the **balance** of gut bacteria.\n\nDiets rich in highly processed foods are also low in fiber, which is essential for the growth of the variety of microbial species needed for gut health. In addition, certain food additives have been shown to affect the diversity of bacteria in the gut by interfering with digestion and nutrient uptake from food.\n\n## Invest in a variety of plant foods\n\nIn order to maintain our gut health, we need to prioritize variety over quantity. That's why experts say we should consume 30 different types of **plant foods** each week. This may sound impossible, but it doesn't mean you should only eat vegetables and fruits. Plant foods also include anything unprocessed from plants like herbs, spices, green tea, legumes, and plant-based snacks like hummus, guacamole and even dark chocolate.\n\nDon’t peel the vegetables and fruits\n\nEating fiber is extremely important for gut health. It acts as a prebiotic, which means it feeds healthy gut bacteria, helping it grow and multiply, making it just as **essential** as the bacteria itself. Fiber is necessary because it feeds the microbiome. Invest in vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, vegetables, mushrooms, fruits, lentils, beans, spices, and herbs.
