Considering that we are talking about two countries that have taken early initiatives against the battle of gender-based discrimination and have implemented numerous policies against gender-based mobbing, bullying, and harassment, _things are not looking good, right?_\n\nAdding to the equation that [women in leadership positions](https://www.workingal.com/articles/why-women-are-underrepresented-in-leadership-positions) are very few compared to their male peers, then it’s completely obvious that sexism and gender inequalities are still the norm.\n\nThat said, it’s pretty obvious that women, on top of obstacles in their career development, also have to face [**widespread sexism**](https://www.workingal.com/articles/10-sexist-quotes-every-woman-has-heard-1) that actually confirms the _“this is a man’s world”_ verse. And even though we need more women in the workforce, it’s essential that we learn how to address and handle sexist people in the business world until the world becomes a better place for all and all genders can collaborate in peace.\n\n# Common signs of sexism in the workplace\n\nIf you are not sure if you can identify whether you are facing sexist behavior at work, check out the following signs:\n\n## You are not paid the same as your peer male\n\n![how to deal with sexism at work.jpg](https://assets.workingal.com/1_7cb84dc218.jpg)\n\nSo, you landed your dream job, all look awesome and you eventually realize that your male peer gets more money for doing the same thing as you. Been there, done that. This is a clear sign that you are working in sexist conditions, and your company hasn’t yet realized that [payroll should be equal](https://www.workingal.com/articles/mind-the-gap-the-fight-for-gender-equal-compensation) in the same job positions. If you address the problem, as I did when I realized that, and their reply is, _“Yes, but you don’t have all the skills as your male colleague,”_ then -guess what- sexism alert! Compensation for a job position is calculated per the position, not according to gender and skills, considering that why, in the first place, do you give the job to someone who doesn’t have the qualifications and not to someone who actually has the skills? This is **problematic** from the beginning and says much about the company and the employer.\n\n## You are not assigned important projects\n\nIf you feel like you **are not included** in specific, high-profile, and noteworthy projects while your male colleagues are undertaking one exciting project after the other, then you are probably a victim of sexist behavior. If a company employs people who are not trusted to carry out the job, then the company’s administration doesn’t have any **business sense**, which is terrible for the future of the company and its employees, but it also shows subtle sexism that is not direct, yet it’s evident if you pay attention. Women often feel left out of critical decisions and discussions, which can also be a severe obstacle to their careers and self-esteem. I can’t count how many times I have had **a seat at the table** but didn’t say anything or was completely ignored when I expressed my opinion. And the most infuriating thing during that time was that my ideas were good, so good that my male peers took ownership of them without my permission.\n\n## You are overlooked during promotions\n\nIf you are career-driven, advancing your career is undoubtedly very important. Promotions are part of this **career advancement** and are considered a reward for the time and effort you put into your work. However, if you are very into your work, working overtime, sacrificing your personal time and the time you spend with your family and your loved ones for your work, waiting for the promotion that -shockingly- never comes while your male peers are inviting the whole office to celebrate their promotion, then this should ring a bell, the sexism bell. I mean, it’s great to celebrate our colleagues' achievements, but if you notice that in the company you are working, the percentage of male people that are promoted is higher than their female counterparts, then your employers should reconsider their gender **discrimination policies** and practices.\n\n## You are the receptor of sexist/harassing jokes and comments\n\nIf your boss or a colleague makes **inappropriate** comments about you, your appearance, or your gender-based skills, then you are definitely experiencing sexism. Also, physical contact without your permission is considered sexism. No, nobody can come that close to you if you don’t want it, and there are specific social distance guidelines that should be followed unless someone gives you permission to come closer. Unfortunately, this subject came into the spotlight [during COVID-19](https://www.workingal.com/articles/10-things-we-learnt-from-the-covid-19-pandemic), when social distancing was vital to stop the _spread of the virus_; it was then that we realized that we were not aware that our personal space was essential and that not many people were aware. I was lucky enough to be able to learn more and be more mindful of the importance of social distancing when I was a student in social studies, and this has always been helpful for me -to keep my distance from people I didn’t want close physical contact with- but also helped me be in good terms with others since I knew how not to **violate their personal space**. Also, there is no “calculator” for how severe this behavior is; something is not right when you feel uncomfortable with a joke, comment, or someone’s physical distance.\n\n# How to deal with a sexist person at work\n\n![how to deal with sexism at work.jpg](https://assets.workingal.com/3_42063758b6.jpg)\n\nNext time you have to deal with a sexist person, and you identify any of the above behaviors, patterns, or modus operandi, try the following tips that actually work and will probably give you a sense of power and self-confidence.\n\n## Pretend You Don’t Get it–and Make Them Explain\n\nWhen you or a colleague are receptors of sexist behavior, the best way is to act as if you do not understand the **meaning** of the comment, joke, etc. For instance, if someone comments about women and driving, instead of getting offensive, which can escalate more -and not in your favor- then simply ask them to explain, “I don’t understand what you just pointed out about women and driving. Can you explain that, please?” So, this way, you put them in a weird position when they have to explain their inappropriate “joke” (or whatever), and then either they explain, which is embarrassing, or they just say, _“it was just a joke,”_ so you can reply without changing your serious attitude, _“Oh, I have never heard of such jokes before.”_ They will get it, believe me, and probably won’t be doing it again.\n\n## Be Straightforward\n\nSometimes, we avoid being straightforward and addressing the issue and the sexist behavior out of fear that people will say that we are overreacting and that “we are too sensitive.” Well, being **offended** by inappropriate behavior is not “being sensitive”; it is about not accepting such behaviors from adults who are supposed to know _basic human manners_. It is offensive if it makes you or another woman feel uncomfortable, and it is offensive to have put a lot of effort into your job and not get that promotion because someone decided not to give you a chance based on your gender. The best way to address all those behaviors is just to be **direct and precise** and support your point of view with concrete examples and arguments. You don’t care what they think of you; you care about making a point that everybody needs equal treatment and there are no genders when it comes to the workplace.\n\n![how to deal with sexism at work 2.jpg](https://assets.workingal.com/2_5bc7b2b65b.jpg)\n\n## Report it\n\nSexist behaviors won’t stop, and gender inequalities will continue to exist if we don’t pay attention and just “take it” out of fear of losing our jobs, our manager’s favor, or not being invited to after-work drinks. In reality, how much do you want to hang out with people who find it funny to make jokes and stereotype based on someone’s gender, or how far do you think you will go by **accepting discriminating behaviors** and people getting things they don’t deserve just because they were born males? So, if you are surrounded by sexist people, superiors, or inferiors, don’t hesitate to report it to the people responsible and “make noise” when things are not right. In the short term, you may feel weird, but in the end you won’t regret it. On the plus side, you will feel more **empowered** and motivated to continue doing your best in your job position.","how-to-handle-sexist-people-in-business","sexism in the workplace, how to respond to sexism, how to deal with sexists, sexim at work","Learn how to reply in sexism and gender-based discrimination when you are at work and how to identify sexist behaviors.","2024-09-24","Europe/Berlin","2024-09-23T22:51:22.949Z","2024-09-23T22:58:01.456Z","2024-09-23T22:58:01.453Z",{"id":105,"documentId":106,"name":107,"alternativeText":108,"caption":109,"focalPoint":62,"width":110,"height":111,"formats":112,"hash":151,"ext":114,"mime":118,"size":152,"url":153,"previewUrl":62,"provider":78,"provider_metadata":62,"createdAt":154,"updatedAt":154,"publishedAt":154},185,"kp19gwavi48pcabgirrq4svj","how to deal with sexism at work-204d71830f99c9845db53035d827383a28ee83ce1ce03563509e1246c8f8b2a9.jpg","","how to deal with sexism at work",1600,900,{"large":113,"small":124,"medium":133,"thumbnail":142},{"ext":114,"url":115,"etag":116,"hash":117,"mime":118,"name":119,"path":62,"size":120,"width":121,"height":122,"sizeInBytes":123},".jpg","https://assets.workingal.com/large_how_to_deal_with_sexism_at_work_204d71830f99c9845db53035d827383a28ee83ce1ce03563509e1246c8f8b2a9.jpg","345ec71be4f1214b1ad8b5a1b4b9c8cc","large_how_to_deal_with_sexism_at_work_204d71830f99c9845db53035d827383a28ee83ce1ce03563509e1246c8f8b2a9","image/jpeg","large_how to deal with sexism at work-204d71830f99c9845db53035d827383a28ee83ce1ce03563509e1246c8f8b2a9.jpg",59.39,1000,563,59389,{"ext":114,"url":125,"etag":126,"hash":127,"mime":118,"name":128,"path":62,"size":129,"width":130,"height":131,"sizeInBytes":132},"https://assets.workingal.com/small_how_to_deal_with_sexism_at_work_204d71830f99c9845db53035d827383a28ee83ce1ce03563509e1246c8f8b2a9.jpg","c8a699f645dfadda809b578281585925","small_how_to_deal_with_sexism_at_work_204d71830f99c9845db53035d827383a28ee83ce1ce03563509e1246c8f8b2a9","small_how to deal with sexism at work-204d71830f99c9845db53035d827383a28ee83ce1ce03563509e1246c8f8b2a9.jpg",21.33,500,281,21333,{"ext":114,"url":134,"etag":135,"hash":136,"mime":118,"name":137,"path":62,"size":138,"width":139,"height":140,"sizeInBytes":141},"https://assets.workingal.com/medium_how_to_deal_with_sexism_at_work_204d71830f99c9845db53035d827383a28ee83ce1ce03563509e1246c8f8b2a9.jpg","d5afe31b74aa623b228ea528fc216e26","medium_how_to_deal_with_sexism_at_work_204d71830f99c9845db53035d827383a28ee83ce1ce03563509e1246c8f8b2a9","medium_how to deal with sexism at work-204d71830f99c9845db53035d827383a28ee83ce1ce03563509e1246c8f8b2a9.jpg",38.41,750,422,38405,{"ext":114,"url":143,"etag":144,"hash":145,"mime":118,"name":146,"path":62,"size":147,"width":148,"height":149,"sizeInBytes":150},"https://assets.workingal.com/thumbnail_how_to_deal_with_sexism_at_work_204d71830f99c9845db53035d827383a28ee83ce1ce03563509e1246c8f8b2a9.jpg","7f18b4bd9ab5e0ef8e612fc25b9a055d","thumbnail_how_to_deal_with_sexism_at_work_204d71830f99c9845db53035d827383a28ee83ce1ce03563509e1246c8f8b2a9","thumbnail_how to deal with sexism at work-204d71830f99c9845db53035d827383a28ee83ce1ce03563509e1246c8f8b2a9.jpg",8.02,245,138,8022,"how_to_deal_with_sexism_at_work_204d71830f99c9845db53035d827383a28ee83ce1ce03563509e1246c8f8b2a9",125.11,"https://assets.workingal.com/how_to_deal_with_sexism_at_work_204d71830f99c9845db53035d827383a28ee83ce1ce03563509e1246c8f8b2a9.jpg","2026-09-06T10:34:03.795Z",{"id":26,"documentId":27,"name":28,"slug":29,"createdAt":156,"updatedAt":156,"publishedAt":157},"2026-09-06T10:31:16.599Z","2026-09-06T10:31:16.613Z",{"id":26,"documentId":48,"name":49,"slug":50,"instagram":51,"facebook":52,"bio":53,"linkedIn":54,"createdAt":55,"updatedAt":55,"publishedAt":56,"avatar":159},{"id":42,"documentId":58,"name":59,"alternativeText":60,"caption":61,"focalPoint":62,"width":63,"height":63,"formats":160,"hash":75,"ext":66,"mime":70,"size":76,"url":77,"previewUrl":62,"provider":78,"provider_metadata":62,"createdAt":79,"updatedAt":79,"publishedAt":80},{"thumbnail":161},{"ext":66,"url":67,"etag":68,"hash":69,"mime":70,"name":71,"path":62,"size":72,"width":73,"height":73,"sizeInBytes":74},{"id":163,"documentId":164,"title":165,"content":166,"slug":167,"coffees":26,"seo_title":165,"keywords":168,"seo_desc":169,"bylineDate":170,"bylineTimezone":100,"createdAt":171,"updatedAt":172,"publishedAt":173,"featuredImage":174,"category":215,"author":216,"img":213},298,"y5rrncz9nsbpwfzhuh024nna","The 5 Mistakes I Did As A Freelancer That Kept Me Back Professionally","**The 5 Mistakes I Did As A Freelancer That Kept Me Back Professionally**\n\nWorking as a freelancer has always fascinated me, and I have always thought that freelancing is a great way to earn money with the **flexibility** of an independent contractor. Even though I have been employed in many companies where I was required to attend the office (as in the 99% of the cases in the pre-COVID era) every day for the classic **9-5 working hours**, I had in the back of my mind that working in an office is completely inflexible and won’t let me grow.\n\nAfter a very harmful experience in a company with an extremely [toxic workplace environment](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-to-recover-from-a-toxic-workplace) where both my skills and mental health took a huge punch, I decided it was time to let go of the office presence and start exploring a **freelancing career**.\n\nMy quick maths and calculations showed that I would be making more money as a freelancer while having more time flexibility and no location constraints.\n\n### Workation, here we go!\n\nLittle did I know! And I had to learn the hard way. As exotic and magical as it sounds, the life of a freelancer is certainly not a piece of cake and is not for everyone.\n\nNo, this post doesn’t aim to spread negativity over the freelancing life but to tell you the truth that nobody will ever tell you. Considering that over the last few years, where social media platforms have been full of “freelancers” who promise you a luxurious lifestyle around the world as [digital nomads](https://www.workingal.com/articles/the-rise-of-digital-nomads-exploring-the-trend), more and more people find it tempting to do that.\n\nFreelancing has been popular for years but came into the spotlight when COVID hit, and businesses worldwide needed to keep operating.\n\nHowever, freelancing has become synonymous with digital nomads and content creators. It has acquired a negative aspect over the last few years, mainly because many people are trying to be freelancers without being aware of what freelancing is and how to make it as a freelancer.\n\nAlso, as an entrepreneur now, I see from my company’s perspective that **freelancing has changed**, and people cannot manage it. They make mistakes that cost them either money or personal time; hence, they just go back to their 9-5 work, where things are less flexible but more stable.\n\nWe have already discussed [freelancers' struggles](https://www.workingal.com/articles/freelancers-the-ultimate-guide-to-survive-during-summer) in another post, which is insightful if you are considering starting a freelance business, and have provided some coping mechanisms during summer. Humor aside, to succeed and thrive as a freelancer, it’s essential to be ahead of problems and try to solve them as quickly as possible. So, benefit from the mistakes I made **during my freelancing years**, and if you want a freelance career, try to avoid them and see yourself growing and blossoming professionally!\n\n# 1\\. I Worked For Free\n\n![blog-900x550-_16_.webp](https://assets.workingal.com/blog_900x550_16_a87f1ba9eb.webp)\n\nWhen I quit the toxic job mentioned above, my mental state was so damaged that I thought I wasn’t good enough in pretty much anything, and I needed to learn better and acquire more knowledge and more experience -hello, [Imposter Syndrome](https://www.workingal.com/articles/are-you-suffering-from-impostor-syndrome)\\- to manage one day to get paid for my work. By the way, I was already being paid for years for doing the same job, but the only difference was that I was doing that from a specific office of a particular company. So, in order to acquire this _“knowledge”_ I allegedly was missing, I did work for free without getting paid. Horrible, just horrible. I managed to undermine myself, my skills, and my experience in order to _“learn.”_\n\nHowever, that wasn’t the only reason; it also had another result: I thought that working **for free** would bring more clients because the ones that I did the free job would say a good word for me. And, of course, they did! The good word was that I would work for free, and the **rumor spread**. This situation continued for some time until the first bill from the [tax office arrived](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-to-manage-your-finances-as-a-freelancer), and I seriously struggled to pay it back.\n\n## **_What to do:_**\n\nNever, ever work for free. Individuals or companies that need free work are not serious or professional. It’s okay to give a **discount** to get the job, especially when making your first steps in business, but never do anything for free. Electricity and rent are not free; this is your job, not your hobby.\n\nIf you feel like the **quality** of your work doesn’t deserve to be paid, why did you start your business to begin with? Don’t let your [Imposter Syndrome](https://www.workingal.com/articles/impostor-syndrome-test) win, and start charging as per your professional value.\n\n# 2\\. I Didn’t Claim Clients’ Debts\n\nWhen you work as a freelancer, you mainly work with other companies and infrequently with individuals. The only problem is that each company has its specific payment terms, especially when it comes to freelancers, and sometimes they can “neglect” the payment or deprioritize their freelancers. This, however, can create **financial chaos** for freelancers since they do not have any **stability**, which can seriously harm their money stream and make it almost impossible to [budget or save money](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-to-manage-your-finances-as-a-freelancer).\n\n![blog 900x550 (15).webp](https://assets.workingal.com/blog_900x550_15_df492b396f.webp)\n\nI got into this situation many times, meaning not collecting my money regularly and neglecting to claim it from the companies I collaborated with. As a result, my finances were a big mess. I couldn’t budget or control where my money went, and some companies owed me vast amounts, which I had to use an attorney to get back.\n\n## **_What to do:_**\n\nSince you are offering a service, it’s essential to keep in mind that you are doing it to live your life. So, you don’t practically care about the **financial situation** of each of your clients (individuals or companies); after all, if they can’t afford the job, they shouldn’t have assigned it in the first place. Set your payment **terms and conditions** before you undertake the job. It may seem overwhelming initially, and when you want to establish yourself as a **professional**, setting clear **expectations** and terms will only make you appear more skilled and experienced from the beginning. You may end up losing a couple of jobs in the process, but eventually, if they don’t **respect** you, why would you want them as clients?\n\n# 3\\. I Undercharged For Easy Work\n\nFor some reason, when I started working as a freelancer, I kept charging each client by considering how easy or difficult each job was. As a result, and given that I was pretty **experienced**, the majority of jobs I undertook seemed -and were- easy for me. However, the fact that something is easy for you doesn’t mean it’s easy or should be considered of less value. Most of the tasks will seem easy for **professionals** who know their job. The clients do not pay for the time you spend on a task; they pay for the quality of your work, whether it took 2 minutes, 2 hours, or two months to complete.\n\n## **_What to do:_**\n\nNever charge according to how easy or difficult a task is for you. Keep up with the industry’s rates, and don’t try to undermine your expertise in order to charge less. The clients don’t know whether something is easy or difficult. And from my **POV**, most clients don’t even want to know; they just want to be done. Charge accordingly and never lower your prices more than the industry’s standards. It creates a substantial generalized problem and undermines the future of professions.\n\n# 4\\. I Didn’t Market Myself\n\n![freelancer mistakes.webp](https://assets.workingal.com/blog_900x550_14_2cad2b8d12.webp)\n\nSo, after some time as a freelancer, I managed to build a network, have some ongoing jobs, and actually make ends meet. **So far, so good!** The problem is that nothing guarantees that your clients will be there tomorrow, and you must be prepared. The moment I started balancing my income and had an ongoing money stream coming in, I got too comfortable and didn’t make any effort to market myself and let the people know what I was doing. So, in case something happened -COVID, for instance- and your primary income get crippled, then you need to have **alternatives**, which I didn’t because I didn’t care about the future back then.\n\n## **_What to do:_**\n\nNo matter how much work you have, always spend time out of your computer, desk, home, and market yourself. Use **social media** to your advantage, show to people what you d, and be alert for new job opportunities. It’s always ok to have some steady collaborators. Still, it’s more than ok always to be open to new **partnerships** and opportunities because the future is never guaranteed, and we can’t control everything. What we can control, though, is how we **present ourselves** and how we market our business and profession.\n\n# 5\\. I Didn’t Control My Personal Time\n\n![blog 900x550 (13).webp](https://assets.workingal.com/blog_900x550_13_a3b11ae3f1.webp)\n\nThe biggest **struggle of a freelancer** is balancing work and personal time. Office hours may seem inflexible and restricting, but they at least guarantee some free time during the day. When you are a freelancer, you practically do not have working hours, and people know that. So, you may end up working for 18 hours because you said “yes” to a bazillion projects, and now you cannot fit them into an 8-hour working day. It’s normal to want to take more and more work, considering that the more you work, the more you get paid as a freelancer, however, be careful because burnout is just around the corner. It’s great to be able to make money, but making money by sacrificing your personal time, rest, and time spent with your loved ones is not as exciting as it sounds.\n\n## **_What to do:_**\n\nStart calculating how much time you need for specific tasks and projects. This way, you will be able to know a ballpark of how many projects you can **undertake** to have some time off -whether within the week or during the weekend. The good news is that freelancing allows you to decide when to work and arrange the rest of your day accordingly. For instance, if you are a **night owl**, you can work during the evening, go grocery shopping in the morning, and work out at noon, as long as you have managed your tasks. Also, dedicate some time away from your phone in order to **decompress**.\n\n### Being a freelancer is exciting but it can also be extremely stressful and financially unstable\n\nAlso, being a freelancer doesn’t mean that you can work from anywhere without any limitations. If, for instance, you work from **the US** and the majority of your clients are in **Europe**, it’s not as easy and carefree as it sounds. It needs programming, excellent project management skills, and awareness.\n\nHowever, if you are not the 9-5 type, then freelancing is probably the solution to a happy career! The Real Story Behind Her Reputation Crisis (2026 Update)","_You knew her as Serena Van Der Woodsen, and for us millennials, she represented the girl who wore the best clothes, made chaos look chic, and somehow always landed on her feet. Then 2024 happened. And 2025. And now here we are in 2026, still talking about Blake Lively but not because of a comeback, but because the story refuses to close._\n\n***\nBlake Lively's reputation is one of the most documented image collapses in recent Hollywood history. What started as a promotional misstep for It [Ends With Us became a legal battle](https://www.workingal.com/articles/what-bugs-me-in-blake-lively-and-justin-baldony-drama), a PR war, and an extended public reckoning that resurfaced _years of inconvenient choices_. If you want to understand what actually happened, not the fan edits, not the PR spin, this is the breakdown.\n\n>She went from 'America's effortless sweetheart' to 'Hollywood's most contested figure' in under six months. Now, the question is no longer whether her image took a hit but whether the hit was earned.\n\n## Blake Lively's Public Image: Who She Was Before the Collapse\nFor almost two decades, Blake Lively held an unusual position in popular culture. She was famous enough to be a household name, aspirational enough to generate genuine admiration, and — crucially — uncontroversial enough that nobody looked too closely.\n\nThe Serena effect was real. Lively's portrayal of Serena Van Der Woodsen on Gossip Girl embedded her in the consciousness of an entire generation of women. The character was everything the show's audience was told to want: stylish, effortless, magnetic. Lively translated that into a real-life image with precision. Her relationship with Ryan Reynolds, their mutual public roasting, their carefully curated family content, it all added up to a brand that felt authentic because it never asked you to question it.\n\nThat is the foundation that cracked in 2024, not because Lively suddenly became a different person, but because the cracks had always been there, and the promotional cycle for It Ends With Us gave everyone a reason to look.\n\n## The It Ends With Us Promotional Disaster\n\n![blake lively 3.jpg](https://assets.workingal.com/blake_lively_3_46895b9d90.jpg)\n\nThe It Ends With Us press tour is now a case study in what happens when a star's personal brand collides with the subject matter of her own film. Colleen Hoover's novel is a story about domestic violence, survival, and the complicated psychology of leaving. Lively promoted it with hair product launches, floral dress codes, and _'grab your florals & friends'_ energy.\n\nThe disconnect was immediate and it was loud. [Online discussions flagged the tension between Lively and director Justin Baldoni](https://www.workingal.com/articles/what-bugs-me-in-blake-lively-and-justin-baldony-drama) early: cast members not following Baldoni on social media, separate promotional appearances, no collaborative presence. Audiences initially assumed that was a marketing tactic but it turned out to be something more substantive.\n\nBaldoni doubled down on the film's weight while Lively pivoted to her business launches and he internet made its choice about which read it preferred.\n\n>**THE VIRAL MOMENT**\nThe Kjersti Flaa interview — an older video in which journalist Kjersti Flaa stated she 'wanted to quit her job' after interviewing Lively — resurfaced at exactly the wrong (for Lively) time. It gave the 'mean girl' narrative a face and a timestamp.\n\n## The Legal Battle: What Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni Actually Filed\nIn late 2024, Lively filed a legal complaint against Baldoni alleging sexual harassment, a coordinated smear campaign, and a hostile work environment during filming. The complaint was filed with the court and simultaneously [shared with The New York Times](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/21/business/media/blake-lively-justin-baldoni-it-ends-with-us.html), which published a detailed account of Hollywood PR operations.\n\n**The strategy was clear:** control the narrative before Baldoni could. It worked, briefly. Baldoni lost projects, lost representation, and faced significant public backlash.\n\nThen Baldoni responded with a countersuit against Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Lively's publicist, and The New York Times, and he brought documentation. The receipts changed the public temperature and by mid-2025, the PR momentum had shifted. Lively's team's case appeared less airtight than the initial New York Times piece suggested.\n\nBaldoni’s countersuit, filed in January 2025 and valued at $400 million, made specific and documented claims. His legal team alleged that Lively and Reynolds ran a coordinated campaign to wrest creative control of the film from Baldoni, then used the harassment complaint as a mechanism to sideline him professionally once he pushed back. The filing included text messages that, according to Baldoni’s attorneys, showed Lively’s team explicitly discussing how to shape media coverage and neutralize Baldoni in the press. Critically, it named Ryan Reynolds as an active participant, not a bystander husband, in the communications strategy. The New York Times countersuit, filed separately, alleged the paper published a one-sided account based on materials selectively provided by Lively’s publicist, without adequate verification of Baldoni’s perspective.\n\n[What this tells us about celebrity culture and how it operates](https://www.workingal.com/articles/lively-baldoni-celebrity-culture) is more instructive than the outcome of any individual lawsuit.\n\n## The Resurfaced Record: Past Controversies That Complicated the Narrative\nWhen an ongoing controversy prompts people to look back, the results are rarely flattering. In Lively's case, the retrospective uncovered three specific incidents that complicated her carefully constructed 'progressive, unbothered' image:\n\n### The plantation wedding (2012)\nLively and Reynolds married at Boone Hall Plantation in South Carolina, a former slave plantation. The choice was not controversial at the time but it became retroactively significant as cultural awareness shifted. However, it remains a factual data point about the judgment calls she was making before the current scrutiny existed.\n\n### The Harvey Weinstein comments\nLively made public statements defending Harvey Weinstein that were resurfaced and widely shared in the context of her current lawsuit. The irony of someone alleging industry misconduct while having previously defended the industry's most prominent abuser was not lost on audiences.\n\n### The Woody Allen comment\nPraising Allen as 'empowering to women' — post-allegations — is the kind of statement that ages poorly under any circumstances. In the middle of a harassment lawsuit, it ages significantly worse.\nNone of these incidents are new. All of them matter more now than they did when they happened, which is precisely how reputation works.\n\n## A Marketer's Take: Where Blake's Team Failed\n\n![blake lively drama.png](https://assets.workingal.com/blake_lively_drama_7cf738c32d.png)\n\nThe [Blake Lively PR situation](https://www.edl.gr/blog/it-ends-with-us-marketing-and-pr-lessons-learned) is not a mystery. It is a textbook example of what happens when a communications team optimizes for brand extension when it should be doing crisis containment. \n\nHere is the breakdown:\n\n### Mistake 1: They launched during the wrong news cycle. \nRolling out a hair product line during the promotional window of a [domestic violence](https://www.workingal.com/articles/the-illusion-of-safety-are-women-safe-in-the-western-world) film is not a scheduling error — it is a priority signal. Audiences read it correctly. When your product launch and your film premiere compete for the same attention, you have told the audience which one matters more to you.\n\n### Mistake 2: They used legal action as a PR tool. \nFiling a complaint and simultaneously handing it to The New York Times is not a legal strategy. It is a reputation play. The problem with reputation plays is that they require the opposing party to have nothing. However, Baldoni had something. And The New York Times is now in a countersuit. That outcome was foreseeable.\n\n### Mistake 3: They underestimated the internet's institutional memory. \nThe Kjersti Flaa interview had been sitting on YouTube for years. The Weinstein quotes were publicly indexed. The plantation wedding photos were in every gossip archive. The team appears to have calculated that none of this material would resurface at scale. In 2024, in a high-attention controversy, that calculation was wrong.\n\n### Mistake 4: They had no credible contrition arc. \nEffective reputation repair requires a moment of visible accountability. Lively never provided one. She did not address the promotional disconnect directly, she did not address the resurfaced interviews, therefore the absence of that moment left audiences with no path back to sympathy.\n\n### Mistake 5: They chose silence over statement. \n\nThere is a version of the Blake Lively situation that could have been managed with a single, well-timed public statement; not an apology tour, not a press conference, but one direct acknowledgment that the promotional rollout missed the mark on tone. That statement never came. Instead, Lively’s team defaulted to legal action and media silence, which in the absence of any counter-narrative allowed Baldoni’s team to define the story. Silence is not neutral in a PR crisis. When one side is talking and the other is not, the side that is talking wins the public narrative, regardless of the legal facts.\n\n>**THE TAKEAWAY FOR WORKING WOMEN**\nYour personal brand is not just what you put out. It is the sum of every decision, statement, and choice that exists on the public record, including the ones you made before anyone was paying attention. Build accordingly.\n\n## Is Blake Lively the Ultimate Hollywood 'Yapper'?\nThere is a specific pattern in Lively's controversies that is worth naming: she talks. A lot. In interviews, in promotional appearances, in the [Kjersti Flaa video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2-2RBi1qzY), in the promotional press run. [Hollywood has a long history of stars](https://www.workingal.com/articles/lights-camera-chaos-4-hollywood-scandals) whose public relations problems were self-generated. Not by scandal, but by saying too much in the wrong room. \n\nIf the concept of a 'Hollywood Yapper' resonates, there is a [full breakdown of what it means and who fits the pattern](https://www.workingal.com/articles/dating-a-yapper-when-does-talking-become-too-much). Blake is not alone in this category, but she is currently the most visible example of how it plays out at scale.\n\n## Blake Lively's Reputation in 2026: Where Things Stand\nThe legal case is ongoing and recently the judge dismissed 10 of her 13 claims, including those of sexual harassment. However, neither side has achieved a definitive win in court or in public opinion. Baldoni has the more coherent narrative at the moment: the receipts strategy was effective. Lively's team appears to be in a holding pattern.\n\nWhat has changed in 2026 is the audience's orientation toward the story. The initial shock of the revelation has settled into something more analytical. People are less interested in whether Blake Lively is a good or bad person and more interested in what the situation reveals about how Hollywood power actually operates.\n\nThat is a harder environment to navigate than a simple cancellation cycle because it does not have a resolution. It just continues.\n\n## Frequently Asked Questions\n### Is Blake Lively nice in real life?\nAccounts differ significantly depending on who is talking and when. Journalist Kjersti Flaa's account suggests a dismissive and condescending interaction. Others describe positive professional experiences. The honest answer is that the public record is contradictory, and the current legal proceedings make it difficult to assess any claims with confidence.\n\n### What is Blake Lively's reputation in 2026?\nSignificantly damaged compared to her pre-2024 standing, though not in a simple 'canceled' sense. As of early 2026, the industry is still absorbing the latest court filings and the ongoing legal battle with Baldoni, combined with the accumulation of resurfaced controversies, has created a complex, contested public image that is unlikely to fully recover without concrete legal outcomes and visible acknowledgment of the issues raised.\n\n### What happened between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni?\nLively filed a complaint alleging sexual harassment, a smear campaign, and a hostile work environment. Baldoni filed a countersuit against Lively, Ryan Reynolds, her publicist, and The New York Times, which was eventually got dismissed. As of 2026, the case remains active and heading to trial in May.\n\n### Did Blake Lively get married on a plantation?\nYes. Lively and Ryan Reynolds married in 2012 at Boone Hall Plantation in South Carolina, a former slave plantation. The choice was not widely critiqued at the time and became a recurring reference point in the 2024-2025 retrospective coverage.\n\n### Will Blake Lively's career recover?\nIt depends on legal outcomes and whether she makes any genuine move toward addressing the public record directly. Image rehabilitation is possible but not automatic. It requires a credible accountability moment, something that has not materialized so far.\n\n### What is Blake Lively’s net worth in 2026?\nBlake Lively’s net worth is estimated at around $30 million as of 2026, though figures vary depending on the source. This reflects her acting earnings, her stake in the Betty Buzz beverage brand, and previous business ventures including her now-shuttered lifestyle site Preserve. The legal battle and associated PR fallout have not visibly impacted her personal wealth in the short term, but the longer-term commercial implications, such as brand partnerships, casting opportunities, remain an open question as the lawsuit continues.\n\n### Did Ryan Reynolds stand by Blake Lively during the controversy?\nPublicly, yes. Reynolds has maintained a united front with Lively throughout, and his name appears in Baldoni’s countersuit as an active participant in the communications strategy, not a peripheral figure. The filing alleges Reynolds was directly involved in the messaging campaign designed to contain and redirect the narrative around the film and the allegations. Reynolds has not addressed these claims specifically in any public statement. It seems, however, that the company has decided to curb promotional videos and released new rules that will block body-shaming images and relatively harmful messages. As expected, users who were making money promoting slimming drugs and tactics saw their commissions affected by the new rules and either headed to other platforms or started changing the way they talked about these drugs. But TikTok is only a part of the social media universe and the huge influence it has gained over our bodies.\n\nOur world is undoubtedly dominated by social media; if you are online, it's hard to escape the endless stream of perfectly filtered images and curated lifestyles. Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok platforms have reshaped our perception of beauty, making body image concerns more prevalent than ever before. But what is social media's impact on our self-esteem? And how can we survive this world of filters and influencers without surrendering to unreal and unrealistic standards?\n\nSocial media's profound influence on body image and the way it shapes our ideals of beauty has recently alerted scientists and psychologists. Over the last 3-4 years, with the rise of influencers promoting unattainable standards and the damaging effects of **comparison culture**, social media, instead of a means of healthy connections, has become a psychological and emotional toll on many individuals, especially women. According to a [survey](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5865626/), social media is correlated with body dissatisfaction and eating disorder symptoms.\n\n# The role of filters and photo editing in shaping body image\n\nSocial media platforms have revolutionized the way we present ourselves to the world. The ubiquity of filters and photo editing tools has created an environment where the \"perfect\" image is the norm. These digital enhancements allow users to smooth skin and slim features and even wholly alter their physical appearance with just a few taps, showing mainly a “different”, more beautified self.\n\nThis ease of manipulation has profoundly impacted our perception of beauty and body image. When constantly exposed to these flawless, filtered images, it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain a healthy, realistic view of our bodies. We see the “perfect” bodies and believe it’s true. The line between reality and fantasy becomes blurred, and we start to internalize the idea that perfection is attainable, even if it's only through digital tools.\n\nThe problem is that these edited images do not reflect the true diversity of human bodies. They perpetuate a narrow, unrealistic standard of beauty that is simply unattainable for the majority of people. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem, and even body dysmorphia as individuals strive to achieve an image that is inherently false and unattainable. The **psychological impact** of this constant exposure to filtered perfection can be devastating, particularly for young people who are still developing their sense of self and body image.\n\nAlongside the rise of filters and photo editing, the influence of social media influencers and celebrities has had a significant impact on body image. These individuals, often with large followings and carefully curated images, have become the new arbiters of beauty and desirability.\n\n![social media and body image.webp](https://assets.workingal.com/social_media_and_body_image_1f2fd67585.webp)\nMany influencers and celebrities promote a specific body type, mainly the thin, toned, and flawless type. The images they share make us believe and reinforce the idea that this is the \"ideal\" body, leading their followers to compare themselves and strive to achieve this unattainable standard, often via extreme methods, such as **extreme diets**, unsuitable and potentially dangerous medications, etc. The constant barrage of these idealized images can be overwhelming, leaving the audience feeling inadequate and ashamed of their bodies.\n\nMoreover, some influencers and celebrities have been known to engage in deceptive practices, such as using filters or editing their images to create an illusion of perfection. This further aggravates the disconnect between the reality of the human body and the unrealistic images presented on social media.\n\n### When followers realize that the photos they've been aspiring to are not authentic, it can lead to a deep sense of betrayal and a further erosion of their self-esteem\n\nThe link between social media use and body dissatisfaction is well-documented. Studies have consistently shown that increased time spent on social media is associated with higher levels of body image concerns, disordered eating behaviors, and overall dissatisfaction with one's physical appearance.\n\nThis phenomenon is particularly prevalent among young people, who are especially vulnerable to social media's negative impacts. Constant exposure to idealized images and the pressure to conform to a certain standard of beauty can lead to a heightened sense of self-consciousness and a preoccupation with physical appearance. According to internal [Meta research](https://about.fb.com/news/2021/09/research-teen-well-being-and-instagram/), for one in three teenage girls who were already struggling with body image issues, the Instagram app made them feel worse.\n\nFurthermore, social media's interactive nature, where users can engage with content, leave comments, and receive feedback, can worsen these issues. The desire for likes, shares, and positive reinforcement can drive individuals to seek validation through their physical appearance, leading to a cycle of insecurity and unhealthy behaviors.\n\nThe pervasive nature of social media has also led to a culture of constant comparison, where individuals constantly evaluate their own bodies and appearance against those of their peers and the influencers they follow. This comparison can have a devastating impact on self-esteem and overall body image.\n\nWhen we see the seemingly perfect bodies and lives of others on social media, it's natural to feel a sense of inadequacy. We may find ourselves scrutinizing our own flaws and shortcomings, feeling as if we fall short of the standards set by these curated images. This can lead to a downward spiral of low self-worth, anxiety, and a **distorted perception** of our own bodies.\n\nThe impact of this comparison culture extends beyond just physical appearance. It can also affect our sense of self-worth, our confidence, and our overall well-being. The constant need to measure up to unrealistic standards can be emotionally draining and can lead to a range of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, and disordered eating.\n\n#### Instead of being motivated to live a balanced life where we eat wholesomely, work out regularly, and take care of ourselves and our health, we are constantly trying to achieve a “photoshopped” image\n\n# Can Social Media Be Healthy?\n\nYes, they can. It all depends on our perspective. The solution is not to cut social media out of our lives, especially given their popularity. What matters is to develop strategies for using social media to our benefit and in a healthy and empowering way. To do so, the first step is to watch who we follow and what we are trying to achieve via navigating through social media platforms.\n![social media and body image.webp](https://assets.workingal.com/social_media_and_body_image_6a925611e1.webp)\n\nIt's essential to be selective and intentional about the social media accounts we engage with, ensuring that they promote body positivity, inclusivity, and realistic representations of the human form. Unfollowing accounts that make us feel inadequate or perpetuate unrealistic beauty standards is a powerful act of self-care.\n\nAdditionally, it's essential to cultivate a social media feed that reflects the diversity of human bodies and celebrates different shapes, sizes, and appearances. Seeking out accounts that showcase a range of body types, skin tones, and physical abilities can challenge the narrow beauty ideals often presented on these platforms.\n\nWhat we also do is take proactive steps to promote positive body image and challenge the dominant narratives around beauty and worth by sharing body-positive content.\n\nThis can involve sharing our own unfiltered, authentic images and celebrating our bodies as they are. It can also include engaging with and amplifying the voices of body-positive influencers, activists, and content creators who challenge the status quo and promote self-love and acceptance.\n\nAnother strategy is to be mindful of the [language we use](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-language-is-affected-by-our-gender) when discussing our bodies and the bodies of others. Avoiding negative self-talk and replacing it with affirmations and positive self-reflection can shift our mindset and cultivate a more compassionate relationship with our physical selves.\n\n****\n\nWhile individuals can take steps to use social media healthily, the responsibility for promoting body positivity and challenging unrealistic beauty standards also lies with the platforms themselves. Social media companies have a significant influence over the content and narratives that are amplified and disseminated, and they have a moral obligation to use this power to support the well-being and self-esteem of their users. Already, many of the most popular social media platforms have implemented stricter policies around the content posted as well as product promotions. However, the road is long, and more consistent measures are needed to eliminate unrealistic and potentially dangerous content.","do-social-media-and-influencers-damage-our-body-image",3,"social media and body image, social media filters and body image, social media causing body image issues, social media and women's body image, ","Social media and influencers can harm our body image and cause negative body perceptions. However, since I wasn’t _“that”_ girl, meaning the girl who would spend a significant amount of time at the gym, I had many misconceptions, and I could characterize myself as a “newbie” in the fitness world. I just wanted to be healthy without paying much attention to what constitutes healthy and how to benefit from exercise. As a result, I found myself not having the outcomes I wished for without having any more than a vague idea of what I was aiming for by working out. Therefore, I was disappointed and began to realize that all those fitness gurus and experts [were just scams](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-the-fitness-industry-lies) and I soon got tired of practically not achieving anything.\n\nIt was sometime after I joined a Pilates studio that I actually learned what constitutes a beneficial workout. While diving into the magic of Pilates, I started **acknowledging** the fitness mistakes I used to make (thankfully, not anymore!), and I didn’t get the results I wanted.\n\nIf you are also tired of working out consistently but not seeing the results you desire, you may be making some of the mistakes I made and severely slowing down my **fitness progress**, making me feel that I was spending my valuable time for nothing. And, apart from the slow process of building my ideal body, I also had some minor injuries or sore muscles for days after my last workout.\n\nFitness experts say that mistakes we make regarding our workout routine can damage our bodies and overall **well-being**. The sooner we identify them, the better and more beneficial our workout will be, and the sooner we will achieve our fitness goals. So, identifying and correcting these mistakes is the optimal way to maximize the effectiveness of your workouts and achieve the results you've been striving for.\n\nWhat you don’t want to do is give up on your **training** and let these mistakes hold you back from reaching your fitness potential. Read on to discover the ten fitness mistakes I made, how I managed to avoid them, and how I started progressing towards a healthier and fitter self.\n\n# I Didn’t Manage My Expectations\n\nThat means that I never set a **concrete fitness goal** and never managed my expectations on how to achieve this goal. For example, I never narrowed down the _“I want to be healthier”_ goal, so I just started going to the gym without purpose. I wrongfully thought that since I had little experience working out, I could do better than a beginner, resulting in visiting the gym every day, not having a workout schedule, and not being able to execute the majority of exercises I was thinking since they were too **advanced**. Do you see the pattern? A newbie without significant experience trying to be a professional trainer -what an unrealistic expectation!\n\nHowever, while having a clear **vision** of what you want to achieve is essential, setting overly ambitious or unrealistic targets can be counterproductive and lead to disappointment and frustration. When you set unrealistic goals, such as expecting to **lose 25 pounds in a month** or build a significant amount of muscle in a short period, you put excessive **pressure** on yourself. This unnecessary pressure can lead to a sense of failure and a lack of motivation, ultimately hindering your progress and potentially causing you to abandon your fitness journey altogether.\n\nFor this reason and in order to avoid this pitfall, it's essential to set **_SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound)_** goals that are realistic and aligned with your current fitness level, lifestyle, and available resources. For instance, if you need to be at the office every day at 8 am and already have a busy morning, hitting the gym earlier may not be an excellent fit for you, and you will eventually skip workouts. Or if you are not a morning person, deciding to wake up only for a workout won’t work well.\n\nIt’s better to move with baby steps each time, make a flexible and achievable workout schedule, and target small goals every time rather than becoming a fitness model within a month—it won’t work, and you will probably risk both your physical and mental health. Also, keep in mind to focus on the process rather than just the outcome so that you can maintain a positive and sustainable approach to your fitness adventure.\n\n# I Didn't Warm-Up Properly\n\nBeing a very career-focused person, you can imagine how much of a **sacrifice** it would be for me to spend my hours working out rather than working. So, many, many times, I skipped warm up in order to save me some time. After many hours spent in the gym without any particular result, I came to the conclusion that **warming up** is a crucial component of any effective workout routine, and it’s important to spend enough time doing it correctly. Skipping proper warm-up increases the risk of injuries, reduces our performance, and delays muscle recovery.\n\nA proper warm-up prepares your body both **physically** and mentally for the demands of your workout. It gradually increases your heart rate, blood flow, and body temperature, which helps to lubricate your joints and activate the muscles you'll be using. This, in turn, improves your range of **motion**, flexibility, and overall movement efficiency, allowing you to perform exercises with better form and technique.\n\nI learned from my Pilates trainer—where I spent 20 minutes only on the warm-up—that neglecting to warm up can lead to muscle strains, joint pain, and even more painful injuries like tendinitis or ligament tears. These types of injuries can sideline you from your workout routine for an extended period, setting back your progress and potentially requiring medical intervention. To avoid my mistake, try to include a **dynamic warm-up** tailored to your specific workout routine, even if it is only 10-15 minutes long; your body will thank you!\n\n# I Didn’t Take Any Breaks\n\n![working gal workout mistakes.webp](https://assets.workingal.com/working_gal_workout_mistakes_456937b13b.webp)\n\nEven though I hadn’t set any particular goals, I decided that the only way to see **results** was to work out daily. However, fitness experts insist on letting our bodies **rest** for some days and not falling into the trap of overtraining. While it is undoubtedly admirable to have a **strong work ethic** and a desire to push your limits, overtraining can have severe consequences for your body.\n\nWhen you **overtrain**, your body doesn't have the necessary time to repair and rebuild the muscles that were broken down during your workouts. Therefore, you will probably notice decreased performance and chronic fatigue, whose origins you won’t be able to determine. According to [several studies](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/overtraining-syndrome), overtraining can also take a toll on your mental health, causing symptoms like irritability, anxiety, and depression—all in good measure.\n\nDon’t forget to take breaks and listen to your body. Not all days are the same, and if you constantly push yourself to exceed your limits, then you will end up being tired and counterproductive. Also, make sure that you engage in low-impact activities or complete rest, balancing the intensity of your workouts as well. This way, your body will be restored, and therefore, you will **maximize** the effectiveness of your workouts and avoid the negative consequences of overtraining.\n\n# I Didn’t Watch Out For My Technique\n\nNo matter how many hours you spend on the Pilates Reformer, on the mat, or at the gym, or no matter how many reps of each exercise you execute, you will not see any results if you don’t perform the **technique** correctly. Effective and safe workouts must be executed with the proper form and technique since poor form can impede progress and increase the risks of **injury**. Improper form can stem from various factors, such as a lack of understanding of proper technique, trying to lift too much weight, or rushing through exercises, even when you don’t follow your trainer’s breathing instructions. When you perform exercises with poor form, you put unnecessary stress on your joints and muscles, which will lead to pain, discomfort, and an ineffective set of exercises. For example, every time I performed squats, I used to do it with a rounded back: this put undue stress on my **lower back**, and I couldn’t see any results on my glutes, even though I could do 100 reps each time.\n\nWhen you are new to a sport, or if you are practicing for the first time, it’s better to get professional assistance first, aka a certified trainer who will help you and **guide** you through the technique of each exercise and how to use your body to perform the exercise correctly. Also, a professional fitness expert will teach you how to use the equipment correctly without harming yourself during the workout. Additionally, listening to your body is essential; if something causes you pain, it’s not beneficial; on the contrary, you may end up injured. Adjust your workouts according to your body’s **needs** and physical condition, and set proper technique as a priority.\n\n# I Skipped Strength Training and Focused on Cardio\n\nCardio exercise is the most popular, especially among people who wish to lose weight. Also, cardio exercise is preferred because, due to its intensity, it gives a sense of **effective** training. I fell into this trap myself, even though my aim wasn’t to lose weight. Cardio is great; however, our bodies need strength as well.\n\nStrength training, such as weightlifting, **bodyweight** exercises, or resistance band workouts, offers a multitude of benefits that can help you achieve our fitness goals, as well as build and maintain muscle mass, increase metabolism, and improve overall strength and energy. Stronger muscles not only enhance your athletic performance but also help protect your **joints** and reduce your risk of injury.\n\nNeglecting strength workouts can lead to muscle imbalances, decreased bone density, and a slower metabolism, which can hinder your fitness progress. Target a balance between your cardio and strength sessions since combining both types of exercises can help you achieve a more well-rounded, effective, and sustainable workout routine. For instance, when I started taking dancing lessons, I combined them with Pilates mat sessions, which helped me **balance** between cardio and strength and made both my workouts effective.\n\n# I Neglected Flexibility and Mobility Exercises\n![working gal workout mistakes.webp](https://assets.workingal.com/working_gal_workout_mistakes_c514991fdc.webp)\n\nBeing flexible by nature, I usually didn’t pay much attention to **flexibility** exercises and solely focused on strength. However, flexibility is an important aspect of working out and has overall benefits to an effective workout.\n\nFlexibility, is the range of motion around a joint and we need it for our joints and muscles to function and they make movement more efficient. If you don’t include flexibility exercises in your workout routine, you run the risk of tightness, stiffness, and a decreased range of **motion**, which can impair your ability to perform exercises with proper form and technique. This, in turn, can increase your risk of injury and slow your progress in achieving your goals.\n\nWhen we talk about mobility, we mean the ability to move a **joint** through its full range of motion with control and stability. Improved mobility can enhance overall movement patterns, improve posture, and reduce the risk of joint-related injuries. Dynamic stretches, foam rolling, and targeted mobility drills are the fundamental exercises you must include in your fitness routine for joint function and movement quality.\n\n# I Neglected My Diet\n\nThat is a big chapter that needs a lot more than an article to explain. However, this was one of my biggest mistakes that prevented me from having the best version of my body. Nutritionists claim that if you want a healthy lifestyle and a well-shaped body, then **_80% of your effort is balanced nutrition and only 20% is exercise_**. An unbalanced and wholesome diet will eventually undermine all your efforts and prevent you from achieving your fitness goals.\n\nInclude a variety of nutrient-dense foods in your everyday diet, such as lean proteins, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats, fruits, and vegetables. These macronutrients and micronutrients are essential for providing your body with the energy, building blocks, and recovery support it needs to perform at its best. Take care of your **pre-and post-workout meals** so that your body has the necessary energy to execute the workout routine and recover afterward.\n\nAlso, **hydration** is essential. If you are not adequately hydrated, your performance during your workouts will decrease. You will end up feeling dehydrated and probably losing a lot of electrolytes. Dehydration can lead to a host of issues, including decreased exercise capacity, muscle cramps, and impaired mental focus.\n\n****\n\nIf you are making the above mistakes, keep this guide close and try to avoid them in order to achieve a healthy and effective workout routine.\n\nA holistic approach to fitness, which includes proper warm-ups, adequate rest and recovery, correct technique, a balanced exercise routine, and a nutritious diet, can help you achieve your goals and maintain a healthy, active lifestyle for years. I Developed Self-Discipline: 7 Proven Ways","“I want to lose weight, but I can't,” “I'll be on a diet from Monday,” “I'll have to take care of my health, but I don’t have the time,” “I'll start getting my medication,” “I want to change jobs, but I cannot sit down and update my LinkedIn profile,” or replace this sentence with whatever you think you need to do.\n\nIf you recognize yourself in one of the above phrases, keep reading because it’s time you **acknowledged** that you lack self-discipline.\n\nThe bad news is that you have lost some time trying to do whatever you need/want/must do. The good news is that there are ways to escape this **vicious cycle** of doing nothing and build the discipline to move from where you are to where you want to be.\n\nFirst things first, we need to define discipline and [self-discipline](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-to-practice-self-discipline). In essence, the big difference between those terms is that discipline is focused on the promise you've given to someone else, so someone else is looking at you and watching your steps. Sometimes, you're trying to be okay with that because it's the stress you feel when somebody is paying **attention** to you and your actions. \n\nSo, what is self-discipline? It is about doing what is right for you and what you've promised yourself, and nobody is watching apart from you.\n\n### Self-discipline is a part of self-leadership\n\nIf you don't have control over your life and you cannot discipline yourself, then how can you lead others?\n\nAccording to numerous studies, self-disciplined people show significant levels of **happiness** and satisfaction compared to people who **struggle** to fulfill their obligations because they feel more productive and creative. They get out of their comfort zone since they are moving towards action, and they're not losing their time and **thoughts** on what could have happened in the past or what they could have done better; the only thing that they care about is [how to succeed](https://www.workingal.com/articles/habits-of-successful-women) and how to move ahead with their lives.\n\nJim Rohn once said that self-discipline is the **bridge** between goals defined and goals accomplished. So, the only way to succeed, move forward, and do what you actually want to do in your life is to be self-disciplined.\n\n![Woman around hands](https://assets.workingal.com/how_to_be_self_disciplined_76fc3242a7.webp)\n\nIf you think being self-disciplined is extremely hard and something you would never be able to achieve, believe me, it’s not; it’s more like following some simple **rules** but following them for an amount of time equivalent to not having to think about them anymore. Keep reading because I have the seven ways that have helped me build self-discipline and actually move forward with my life -personally and professionally.\n\n# Replace “I Have To” With “I Want To”\n\nOk, this is a great one -and it can be fun! If you tell yourself that **you have to** lose weight or you **have to save money this month**, then by default, you put yourself in a position where what you are going to do is either extremely dull or overly unpleasant, and it shows that you have to work hard for that and that someone has imposed and enforced that to you, but when you say _“I want to lose weight”_ or _“I want to go to save money this month,”_ you automatically get in the mood that you are motivated to go for it. So, next time you must do something, replace those two words and see the magic of your brain when you tell it the right words!\n\n# Manage Self-expectations\n\nIt's physically impossible to be exceptional in everything we are doing. Nobody is good at everything, so it is important to be self-aware and know where you are good and where you're not. Then, when you understand your sensitive spots, it will be easier for you to work for them and put them first on your **to-want list** because you don't want to be exposed; you want to do your job and move on with your goals. Don't start with the easy ones, aka the things you are good at; begin with the **challenging** ones because this is the only way to build self-discipline. For instance, if your sensitive spot is communications, then the first thing you should put on your “want list” is to communicate in any possible way with everyone; so, go on arrange meetings, **call** people instead of texting, have a chit-chat with the person waiting behind you on the line to grab a Starbucks… If you keep doing that, you will soon feel more comfortable talking to other people, and, at the same time, you will **build** discipline.\n\n# Avoid Distractions\n\nSuppose you are about to work on a critical project or have a crucial deadline. You know that, but having your phone beside you will make you **scroll**. So, you lose a couple of hours of your life doomscrolling and end up late at night with no energy or motivation to finish your report. Take your phone and put it somewhere else. Remove it from where you are, restrict access to your phone for the next couple of hours until you progress with your work, and try not to go and touch it. Some phone apps can help you do that, but your loved ones can also be a helpful **ally**; that means take your phone and give it to you only when the time is right. Overall, try to do whatever you can to avoid distractions, **temptations**, or whatever keeps you away from your goals.\n\n# State your why\n\nWhen you want to achieve a goal but don't feel disciplined enough, remember your **why**. For instance, if your goal is to lose weight, why do you want to do that? Reflect on what achieving this goal means for your life, how important it is, and what good it can bring; also think about the negative impact of not **fulfilling** it. If you know your why, then the motivation of being self-disciplined is going to be more accessible, and you are going to remember the reasons for taking away from yourself some quick pleasure, like sitting on the couch without doing anything instead of hitting the **gym**.\n\n# Schedule Your Time Accordingly\n\n![woman doing plank with barbels](https://assets.workingal.com/blog_900x550_2_1_6cda54913c.webp)\n\nList all the actions and activities you must do to **achieve** your goals and go where you want to be; then add them to your calendar. If you want to go to the gym early in the morning, block the calendar so that this is the dedicated time. If you want to finish the report, block this time on the calendar so that this time is dedicated to that. Having a **calendar** will definitely help you take action. My colorful calendar is watching me every single day! However, what you need to pay attention to is to make your calendar as **functional** as you can so that your tasks are achievable. Don’t overload yourself every day, and don’t try to fit everything in one day. Trust me, if you keep doing this for a month, the calendar habit will become irreplaceable!\n\n# Change The Way You See Yourself\n\nThe way you **look** at yourself and the way you talk to yourself is fundamental. If you keep telling yourself that you cannot be self-disciplined, you cannot sit down and do what you must, or that you do not have what it takes to move forward, this becomes a **self-fulfilling prophecy**, and you end up causing your beliefs to come true. Instead of this negative self-talk, try tomorrow to wake up and say, _“I'm very disciplined, and I can do everything,”_ or _“I can do whatever it takes to lose weight or to save money this month.”_ It may not work the first day, but after 10 days, if you keep motivating yourself like this and talking positively to yourself, believe me, this will get you the self-discipline you need.\n\n# Forgive Yourself\n\nSelf-discipline is not a sprint; it's a **marathon**. It's expected to be kept from being disciplined every day. This is a common motif for people who start a diet on Monday. Imagine going to the office while you're ready to begin your new nutritional plan, and then a colleague has their birthday, and they have brought candies. You eat one, and then you say, _“you know what, I don't think I'm going to do that. I'm not capable of doing that”_. And then you drop your diet. Let me tell you something: It's okay to **make a slip**. You need to forgive yourself and move forward to the rest of your diet day. If you want ice cream, it's okay; you can keep eating healthy after that. Do not slap yourself if you have a sleep, and do not feel that you failed in any way. Do not ruin what you have been building with your **nutrition** all this time for one time for 5 minutes that it took with this ice cream; it's okay; you deserve a moment of sleep, and you go back to your plan as you have scheduled it.\n\nSelf-discipline is something that you need to work on and keep trying to achieve. This is your first and very impressive of the island's **beauty** and **uniqueness**.\n\n### Tip: Consider renting a car\n\nCorfu is a big island; you can only get the whole experience if you have a car! Luckily, several car and motorbike rental companies suit every **taste** and **budget**. Personally, I wouldn’t suggest renting a motorbike, as the road network is not very well preserved, so a car would be a safer solution.\n\n# Northern Corfu\n\nLet's first see the northern part of the island! Leaving the port, we head towards the city's suburbs, such as Kontokali and Gouvia, which, due to the many **rentals and hotels**, are full of tourists in the summer. You can find several beaches there, and the location is convenient as you are ten minutes from the city, Paleokastritsa, Dassia, and Ipsos, which are about the same distance.\n\nDassia and Ipsos are very popular tourist areas with shallow waters, restaurants, and intense nightlife. Heading north, we will approach Barbati, which has many accommodation options and a wonderful pebbly sea, with many **beach bars and restaurants**. Going further, we pass by various small villages and lovely swimming bays, such as Nissaki, Agni, Kalami, the beautiful Kerasia beach, and Avlaki. Finally, we reach the largest town of northeastern Corfu, Kassiopi. Kassiopi is about 50 minutes from the port of **Corfu**. There is a very picturesque harbor and many small bays where you can swim while drinking your evening coffee.\n\nThe beaches of Kalamaki are perfect for children as they are very shallow, as is the beach of Agios Spyridonas. Apart from the main beach, there is a smaller one that few people know, located after the small bridge.\n\nRight before Agios Spyridonas beach, there is an old village, Palaia Perithia, an architectural gem of the island. The village has been **abandoned** since 1960. However, the old mansions and houses, all built according to Venetian architecture, have been preserved over time.\n\nSince 1980, the old Perithia has been declared a **Historical Preservable Monument**. After strolling through the village, you can taste Corfiot **delicacies** at one of the restaurants.\n\n### Before leaving the village, don’t forget to stop at Ice Dream for authentic Italian ice cream in many unique flavors\n\nTo reach the northernmost part of the island, which consists of many small villages, the most renowned being **Acharavi** and **Sidari**.\n\nAcharavi is very crowded in the summer, with many choices for drinks, food, clubs, etc. Its beach extends to 3 km, one of the longest in Corfu. Ten minutes from Acharavi is Sidari, which is also a very touristic area, with a shallow beach and the impeccable Canal D'amour, the **Greek Channel of Love**, which is an area with rocks created by the formations of the sea and on one of these rocks, there is a sea path. According to a legend, couples who go through it together without separating hands will stay together forever.\n\nBefore you leave the northern part of Corfu, don’t forget to visit the unique beach of Agios Georgios Pagon. It is a large bay with **crystal clear** waters, sometimes frozen, but well worth a visit! You can also rent a boat from here to visit Paleokastritsa.\n\n# West Corfu\n\nPaleokastritsa is one of the most popular destinations in Corfu. It is about 20 minutes from the city center and is usually full of tourists in the summer. Apart from the main beach, there are little bays around where you can be **more private** and enjoy the -cold- but amazing waters. The unique thing about this place is that because the ground is virgin, most beaches have rocks, and some are difficult to access.\n\n![corfu travel destination](https://assets.workingal.com/blog_900x550_9_1_886ae59533.webp)\n\nIf you visit Paleokastritsa, rent a boat to tour all these lovely, remarkable bays, such as Rovinia, Limni, Paradise Beach, Liapades Beach, and many more. Don't forget to visit, either by sea or on foot, the fantastic **all-day beach bar** built inside a rock, [La Grotta](https://www.lagrottabar.com/)! Here, you can swim in the morning and enjoy your drink until late at night, watching the incredible view.\n\n# Southern Corfu\n\nLet’s now move to the southern part of Corfu. Leaving the city heading south, there is the well-known Achillion Palace. It was the palace of **Princess Sissy,** who was in love with the ancient Greek God Achilles, hence its name.\n\nLeaving Achillion, we take the main road to reach **Lefkimmi**. This narrow road has many turns, so you must pay attention, especially in the summer when it is jam-packed! The first seaside village we meet is Benitses, which many tourists choose because it is relatively close to the city! Here, you can find many restaurants and bars and the **Sea Shell Museum of Corfu**, which is quite interesting. Heading to the south, we meet Moraitika and Messonghi villages, where you can find great hotels for all tastes.\n\nChalikounas and Issos are two massive sandy beaches with beach bars and many places for those who want tranquility. In the area, there is also **Lake Korission**, the only lake on the island, which has been declared a Landscape of Outstanding Natural Beauty and belongs to the Natura 2000 network.\n\nMarathias Beach is ideal for surf lovers when it’s windy. From there, we drive to Lefkimmi, a small town with many shops, bars, and services! From here, it is possible to take the **ferry** to Igoumenitsa and Paxos.\n\n# Corfu Old Town\n\nUndoubtedly, Corfu's most beautiful and iconic part is the **old town**! Walking through the kantounia (small alleys), you feel you are in another era! The Venetians occupied Corfu for many years, and that's why they heavily influenced the island's culture; you will notice an _“Italian”_ vibe around.\n\nNext to the main port is the Old Port, or Spilia, as the locals call it.\n\nFrom there, you can explore the New Fortress of Corfu and walk towards Liston Square.\n\nA must-visit is the **Saint Spyridon Church**, the patron saint of Corfu.\n\nIt is located in the alleys of the old town, and from there, the visitor reaches the famous pedestrian street, Liston, the local meeting point, where you will find many cafes and restaurants. Walking across **Liston**, you will end up at the Museum of Asian Art, and behind, there is a magnificent public garden worth a walk, overlooking the sea and the old Fortress.\n\nDo not forget to visit **Garitsa**, which has many restaurants and a magnificent view of the fortress, especially at night!\n\n### Walking by the sea from the Old Fortress to Garitsa Bay totally worth it\n\n![corfu old town](https://assets.workingal.com/blog_900x550_9_c3a286822c.webp)\n\nAbout 5 minutes from the city by car lies **Kanoni**, with a beautiful view of Pontikonissi Island and the Vlacherna Monastery. Here, you can enjoy your coffee or drink while enjoying the fantastic view, not only of the monastery and the bay but also of the airport since the airway is extremely close. Watching **airplanes** take off and land in the background is quite mesmerizing!\n\nCorfu is an amazing, cosmopolitan island that can satisfy every taste. Enjoy the always happy locals' singing accents and relax in a must-go travel **destination**!\n\nAnd, to help you a bit more, here is a ToDo List for your trip to Corfu! Enjoy!\n\n# Your Corfu Bucket List\n\n- Have a coffee in Liston Square.\n- Visit the Old Fortress and take a selfie with the Garitsa Bay and the Old City in the back.\n- Try the traditional local dishes: Pastitsada, Bourdeto, and Sofrito.\n- Eat stuffed donuts at the town hall square, at Dripping Honey.\n- Stroll around Campiello, the oldest area of the Old Town with the beautiful alleys.\n- Visit the Archaeological Museum.\n- Walk to Kanoni - Vlacherna Monastery.\n- Enjoy your drink at the Hotel Cavalieri roof garden, which has an endless view of the Old Fortress and the bay of Garitsa.\n- Enjoy the singing accent of the inhabitants of Corfu.","corfu-the-queen-of-the-ionian-sea","corfu island greece, corfu kerkira greece, paleokastritsa, corfu greece, corfu old town","If you are looking for an elegant yet historic and popular holiday destination, then Corfu island is what you are looking for!","2024-07-14","2024-07-14T16:35:43.521Z","2024-09-03T20:14:37.605Z","2024-07-16T16:56:25.290Z",{"id":466,"documentId":467,"name":468,"alternativeText":469,"caption":470,"focalPoint":62,"width":110,"height":111,"formats":471,"hash":499,"ext":181,"mime":185,"size":500,"url":501,"previewUrl":62,"provider":78,"provider_metadata":62,"createdAt":502,"updatedAt":502,"publishedAt":502},135,"spelu9s7ky2tdl4tm19skpl7","corfu travel destination-a9c9257bf3437493ab1bd2625e8421730c7234799dbc58cc70064df8fc49884d.webp","corfu beach","corfu travel destination",{"large":472,"small":478,"medium":485,"thumbnail":492},{"ext":181,"url":473,"etag":474,"hash":475,"mime":185,"name":476,"path":62,"size":271,"width":121,"height":188,"sizeInBytes":477},"https://assets.workingal.com/large_corfu_travel_destination_a9c9257bf3437493ab1bd2625e8421730c7234799dbc58cc70064df8fc49884d.webp","1799b06c63478961d3d5128faa2fe857","large_corfu_travel_destination_a9c9257bf3437493ab1bd2625e8421730c7234799dbc58cc70064df8fc49884d","large_corfu travel destination-a9c9257bf3437493ab1bd2625e8421730c7234799dbc58cc70064df8fc49884d.webp",175498,{"ext":181,"url":479,"etag":480,"hash":481,"mime":185,"name":482,"path":62,"size":483,"width":130,"height":131,"sizeInBytes":484},"https://assets.workingal.com/small_corfu_travel_destination_a9c9257bf3437493ab1bd2625e8421730c7234799dbc58cc70064df8fc49884d.webp","68f8fe9af278f4fa0e587ac1fb01be44","small_corfu_travel_destination_a9c9257bf3437493ab1bd2625e8421730c7234799dbc58cc70064df8fc49884d","small_corfu travel destination-a9c9257bf3437493ab1bd2625e8421730c7234799dbc58cc70064df8fc49884d.webp",52.36,52364,{"ext":181,"url":486,"etag":487,"hash":488,"mime":185,"name":489,"path":62,"size":490,"width":139,"height":140,"sizeInBytes":491},"https://assets.workingal.com/medium_corfu_travel_destination_a9c9257bf3437493ab1bd2625e8421730c7234799dbc58cc70064df8fc49884d.webp","db668a10ba94d30a1f40f51849a34ce4","medium_corfu_travel_destination_a9c9257bf3437493ab1bd2625e8421730c7234799dbc58cc70064df8fc49884d","medium_corfu travel destination-a9c9257bf3437493ab1bd2625e8421730c7234799dbc58cc70064df8fc49884d.webp",108.46,108460,{"ext":181,"url":493,"etag":494,"hash":495,"mime":185,"name":496,"path":62,"size":497,"width":148,"height":149,"sizeInBytes":498},"https://assets.workingal.com/thumbnail_corfu_travel_destination_a9c9257bf3437493ab1bd2625e8421730c7234799dbc58cc70064df8fc49884d.webp","a8409afbe116002a97df4dd519a10bb9","thumbnail_corfu_travel_destination_a9c9257bf3437493ab1bd2625e8421730c7234799dbc58cc70064df8fc49884d","thumbnail_corfu travel destination-a9c9257bf3437493ab1bd2625e8421730c7234799dbc58cc70064df8fc49884d.webp",14.29,14294,"corfu_travel_destination_a9c9257bf3437493ab1bd2625e8421730c7234799dbc58cc70064df8fc49884d",411.27,"https://assets.workingal.com/corfu_travel_destination_a9c9257bf3437493ab1bd2625e8421730c7234799dbc58cc70064df8fc49884d.webp","2026-09-06T10:33:16.282Z",{"id":21,"documentId":22,"name":23,"slug":24,"createdAt":504,"updatedAt":504,"publishedAt":505},"2026-09-06T10:31:17.364Z","2026-09-06T10:31:17.407Z",{"id":26,"documentId":48,"name":49,"slug":50,"instagram":51,"facebook":52,"bio":53,"linkedIn":54,"createdAt":55,"updatedAt":55,"publishedAt":56,"avatar":507},{"id":42,"documentId":58,"name":59,"alternativeText":60,"caption":61,"focalPoint":62,"width":63,"height":63,"formats":508,"hash":75,"ext":66,"mime":70,"size":76,"url":77,"previewUrl":62,"provider":78,"provider_metadata":62,"createdAt":79,"updatedAt":79,"publishedAt":80},{"thumbnail":509},{"ext":66,"url":67,"etag":68,"hash":69,"mime":70,"name":71,"path":62,"size":72,"width":73,"height":73,"sizeInBytes":74},{"id":511,"documentId":512,"title":513,"content":514,"slug":515,"coffees":288,"seo_title":513,"keywords":516,"seo_desc":517,"bylineDate":518,"bylineTimezone":100,"createdAt":519,"updatedAt":520,"publishedAt":521,"featuredImage":522,"category":560,"author":561,"img":558},232,"u9dn167tbqcgj6sfzl2biy0j","Why Women Are Underrepresented in Leadership Positions?","Throughout history, women have shattered glass ceilings and defied limitations. Their contributions across every field are indisputable, from pioneering scientists to bold entrepreneurs. Today, women represent a **powerful force** in the global workforce, achieving educational milestones and demonstrating exceptional leadership qualities.\n\nHowever, despite significant progress in education and qualifications, along with the [Gender Equal Compensation](https://www.workingal.com/articles/mind-the-gap-the-fight-for-gender-equal-compensation), a persistent barrier remains: _women are still considerably underrepresented_ in leadership positions across many industries. This lack of parity not only represents a missed opportunity to leverage the full potential of **talent** but also hinders company growth and innovation.\n\n# Facts and Figures: The Gender Leadership Gap\n\nThe underrepresentation of women in leadership positions is a global phenomenon with significant consequences, and the data paints a clear picture of this ongoing disparity:\n\nThe [2023 Women in the Workplace Report](https://www.mckinsey.com/featured-insights/diversity-and-inclusion/women-in-the-workplace), conducted by McKinsey and LeanIn, showed that women now occupy the highest level of C-suite representation in history, at 28%.\n\n![Women in leadership positions](https://assets.workingal.com/Women_in_leadership_positions_9f1e328d15.webp)\n##### Source: [Research Gate](https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Percent-of-institutions-and-number-of-women-in-leadership-positions-1998-2013_fig2_289685995)\n\nThis gap widens at higher levels, with men significantly outnumbering women in C-suite roles.\n\nIn the US, for instance, women CEOs make up a mere **10.4% of Fortune 500 companies**.\n\nAccording to the [World Economic Forum](https://www.weforum.org/publications/global-gender-gap-report-2023/in-full/gender-gaps-in-the-workforce/), labor force participation parity is highest in _North America (84%), followed by Europe (82%), East Asia, and the Pacific (80%)._\n\nThe International Labour Organization (ILO) reports that [women comprise over 40% of the global workforce](https://www.ilo.org/). This signifies a growing presence of women contributing across various industries and sectors, but **only 38% of manager positions** globally are occupied by women. This gap widens dramatically at higher levels.\n\nEurope boasts the highest regional [gender parity at 76.3%](https://www.weforum.org/press/2023/06/gender-equality-is-stalling-131-years-to-close-the-gap/). One-third of European countries rank in the top 20 for overall gender equality. However, women remain underrepresented in leadership roles, particularly on corporate boards and high-level management.\n\nEast Asia and the Pacific have the fifth-highest regional score, showing **68.8% parity**. Progress varies significantly: New Zealand leads the region, but South Asia lags far behind. Compared to Europe, women hold a smaller share of leadership positions, especially in politics.\n\nIt's important to note that the gender leadership gap varies across regions. While some countries have made significant strides towards gender parity in leadership, others continue to lag behind.\n\n# Understanding the Barriers\n\nThere are several factors that contribute to women's underrepresentation in leadership, and they all sum up in biases.\n\n## Unconscious Bias\n\nOne of the most significant obstacles women face on their path to leadership is unconscious bias. Unconscious bias is implicit **stereotypes** and assumptions that unconsciously influence our thoughts and behaviors. It can lead women to underestimate their abilities compared to men, holding them back from applying for leadership roles or advocating for themselves during promotions.\n\nIn the context of leadership, unconscious bias can manifest in several ways:\n\n### Perception of Leadership Traits\n\nTraditional leadership stereotypes often associate decisiveness, assertiveness, and risk-taking with **effective leadership**. These qualities are frequently (and unconsciously) attributed more readily to men. Women exhibiting these traits might be perceived as aggressive or bossy, hindering their leadership potential.\n\n### The \"Motherhood Penalty\"\n\nUnconscious bias can penalize women for their maternal roles. The motherhood penalty describes how mothers suffer severe compensation and hiring disadvantages in the workplace. They might be seen as less dedicated or reliable due to potential **childcare commitments**, even if they are demonstrably high performers, making them less committed leaders. This stereotype ignores the fact that many men also value [work-life balance](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-to-maintain-your-work-life-balance), and many women are perfectly capable of excelling in both areas.\n\n### The \"Likability Trap\"\n\nWomen leaders are often held to a higher standard of likability compared to their male counterparts. They might face pressure to conform to a more agreeable or passive leadership style, which can undermine their **perceived authority**. For example, a woman who makes a tough decision or delivers critical feedback might be seen as harsh or demanding, while a man exhibiting the same behavior might be seen as decisive and strong. This **double standard** creates a challenging situation for women leaders as they navigate the need to be assertive while maintaining a sense of approachability.\n\n![women in leadership](https://assets.workingal.com/women_in_leadership_57b72281ad.webp)\n##### Source: [LinkedIn Economic Graph](https://economicgraph.linkedin.com/blog/the-number-of-women-hired-into-leadership-is-increasing-but-by-less-than-one-percent-a-year)\n## Confirmation Bias\n\nWhen evaluating **candidates**, decision-makers might unconsciously focus on information that confirms pre-existing biases. For example, if a hiring manager assumes women are less suited for technical roles, they might subconsciously downplay a female candidate's technical skills while focusing more on her soft skills. Also, if leadership is seen as a **masculine field**, interviewers might unconsciously be more likely to see strong leadership qualities in male candidates.\n\n#### The danger of unconscious bias lies in its subtlety. These biases operate outside our conscious awareness, making them particularly difficult to identify and address\n\n## Work-Life Balance Challenges\n\nWomen often shoulder a more significant burden of domestic responsibilities, making it harder to navigate the demands of leadership roles that often require long hours and extensive travel.\n\nEven today, women often take on a larger share of **household chores**, childcare, and eldercare duties than men. This double burden of paid work and unpaid **domestic labor** creates a significant time crunch, making it difficult for women leaders to maintain the long hours and extensive travel often associated with top positions.\n\n# Why Diverse Leadership Leads to Success\n\nWhile the underrepresentation of women in leadership is a pressing issue, there's a compelling reason to strive for gender parity at the top: companies with strong female leadership demonstrably outperform those without. Studies by McKinsey & Company, such as \"[Diversity Wins: How Inclusion Matters](https://www.mckinsey.com/featured-insights/diversity-and-inclusion/diversity-wins-how-inclusion-matters),\" have shown a clear correlation between gender diversity in leadership and positive business outcomes. Why?\n\n### Diverse Perspectives\n\nWomen leaders bring a unique set of experiences and viewpoints to the table. This diversity of thought fosters more creative problem-solving and **innovation**. When faced with challenges, a leadership team with a broader range of perspectives is better equipped to consider different approaches and arrive at more effective solutions.\n\n### Stronger Talent Pool\n\nBy breaking barriers for women in leadership, companies tap into a vastly larger pool of qualified talent. This allows them to identify and promote the best person for the job, regardless of **gender**, leading to a more robust overall leadership team.\n\n### Improved Decision-Making\n\nInclusive leadership that leverages diverse **perspectives** can lead to more informed and well-rounded decision-making. When a broader range of voices are heard and considered, decision-makers are less likely to fall prey to **groupthink** or overlook potential blind spots.\n\n### Enhanced Reputation and Branding\n\nCompanies that champion **gender diversity** in leadership project a progressive and **inclusive** image. This can attract top talent, improve customer loyalty, and enhance the company's reputation in the marketplace.\n\n### Role Models and Mentorship\n\nThe presence of successful women leaders creates positive role models for future generations, inspiring and encouraging more women to pursue **leadership aspirations**. Additionally, women leaders can mentor and sponsor other women, fostering a culture of support and advancement within the organization.\n\nBridging the Gender Leadership Gap is not easy; we have much to work on. However, when businesses take more decisive initiatives and create a more welcoming and inclusive environment for women, we will be one step closer to more female leaders.","why-women-are-underrepresented-in-leadership-positions","women in leadership, women in leader, female leadership, women leading, women business leaders, ","Eventhough women are constantly entering the workforce, however, women in leadership positions are not enough. Yeah, adulthood is a bit more complex. Being a **grown woman** is pretty awesome, don’t you think? You're independent, capable, and hopefully rocking a killer sense of self. But sometimes, even the coolest grown-ups can find themselves sticking to a few habits that belong more on the playground than in the boardroom or at a fancy dinner party, and even the most capable woman can find herself slipping back into some, well, let's just say \"less mature\" habits.\n\nMany times, people do things we don't understand. We adopt behaviors that go \"against\" our age, and even though we know we are _\"wrong,\"_ we continue in the same mode. Unfortunately, these \"bad\" habits can also prevent us from growing up - emotionally and spiritually.\n\n![woman acting like a child](https://assets.workingal.com/5_Childish_Behaviors_5af958ab9f.webp)\n\nEven the \"smallest\" thing, from holding a grudge against a friend for something meaningless or seeking validation from others, can be considered \"childish\" behavior and a tell-tale sign that it's time to grow up.\n\nHowever, all this growing-up talk is not about losing your sense of fun or spontaneity! It's about recognizing behaviors that might be holding you back from feeling truly empowered and fulfilled.\n\nSo, let's ditch the emotional tantrums and embrace the beautiful things that come with being a grown woman. Here are five childish behaviors you can say goodbye to and step confidently into your most mature, fabulous self!\n\n# You are selfish in your friendships\n\nIf you have a friend willing to drop everything and be there when you need them, do the same for them. In friendships, efforts should always be equal for a **healthy** outcome. If your friend is always there when you need them, it's time for you to do the same. Grown-ups understand the importance of caring for their loved ones and sometimes make small sacrifices to be there for them.\n\n# You hold a grudge\n\nIt's time to stop obsessing about your ex or constantly talking about them. We know it may hurt, but life is short. Keep people in your life who are good for you, and get rid of anyone who doesn't make your world a better place. People do their best according to their **perceptions** and life experiences, and filling yourself with negative emotions is a sign that you must work towards your adult self. In general, avoid drama; if you aren’t a teen movie star, don’t act like one!\n\n# You seek validation from others\n\nWhen you want to find your [confidence and self-esteem](https://www.workingal.com/articles/habits-than-ruin-your-self-confidence), instead of turning to others for validation, it's best to turn inward. That is, to yourself. Once you reach a certain age, you just have to stop [overthinking](https://www.workingal.com/articles/why-are-you-overthinking) or being afraid. Do what makes you happy, and don’t count on anyone’s opinion. Different people, different personalities, hence, different perspectives.\n\n# You are never grateful\n\nDenying or not acknowledging the positive aspects of yourself and your efforts is more than just childish behavior. Feeling ungrateful could be a sign of a deeper inner **problem**, and it is undoubtedly a sign that you need to grow up. Being grateful for everything in your life that makes you happy is important and remember that not all people have had or will ever have the same chances as you in life. Appreciate all the good around you and say, “Thank you!”.\n\n# You think you know everything\n\nNo, you don't know everything. No one knows it all, and if anyone thinks they do, they're just naive. As you get older, you realize that everything is so fluid that life **changes** from one day to the next, and that's more than okay. Nothing is a given, not even knowledge. The “smart-ass” attitude is not appealing and generally turns people away.
