I have had some Pilates Mat courses over the years, so far away that I didn’t even know Pilates Reformer. However, due to chronic neck pain that deteriorated my quality of life for years, with constant migraines, vertigo, and complete intolerance for sunlight, my physiotherapist suggested trying the reformer.\n\nFor some reason, the world around me seemed to be highly into fitness those days, so I took it as a motivation to incorporate [regular exercise into my life](https://www.workingal.com/articles/these-are-the-9-workout-mistakes-i-made-and-i-didn-t-get-results). I have been doing random workouts in different fields, but nothing seems to please my extravagant preferences.\n\nSo, I found a studio very close to my house and booked a first class just to see what I’m dealing with and whether Reformer is as good as it is marketed.\n\nWell, I can admit I got excited from day 1, and I haven’t stopped being excited since then. To begin with, with only two classes per week, I soon started seeing results in my body. The migraines began being more rare and I felt my body more carefree and intense. Within 2 months, my abs started showing results, and after 6 months, I completely got rid of the neck pain, which didn’t get better due to the long office hours.\n\nSince that first day, Pilates reformer has been a part of my life so much that when I miss a class, I feel bad. Reformer is a game-changer for your overall well-being and body and can do wonders for your posture. Let’s not forget that Joseph Pilates created it for that reason.\n\n# Just a little history\n\n### The Reformer is born\n\nDuring World War I, while interned, Joseph Pilates worked with injured individuals. He began experimenting with springs attached to hospital beds, enabling patients to exercise even while bedridden. This experience was fundamental in the development of the reformer. The reformer was designed to provide support and resistance, making it possible for people with limited mobility or injuries to perform exercises that would otherwise be difficult or impossible.\n\n![reformer mermaid exercise](https://assets.workingal.com/pilates_reformer_exercises_6c5ee3731e.webp)\n\nPilates aimed to create a system that would strengthen the entire body, improve flexibility, and promote proper alignment. The reformer's springs provide variable resistance, allowing for a wide range of exercises that target different muscle groups. The machine's design also helps to improve balance and coordination. Joseph Pilates called his method _\"Contrology,\"_ emphasizing the importance of mind-body connection and precise movements. The reformer assists in achieving this control by providing feedback and support during exercises.\n\n# Why Pilates reformer?\nFor a person like me who suffers from severe neck pain, it is important to find a type of workout that doesn’t increase the risk of injury but still helps work my back and neck muscles so that they gain strength. In general, even though the reformer does wonders for people with spine and neck problems as well as people who suffer from injuries, it’s an overall amazing exercise for multiple reasons.\n\nFirst of all, the main principle of the reformer is to focus on engaging the deep core muscles, leading to a stronger and more stable core. This way, while we strengthen our core muscles, we enhance our alignment; therefore, we manage to improve our posture.\n\nThe exercises on the reformer challenge your balance and stability, leading to improvements in coordination and the resistance provided by the springs allows for a full-body workout that strengthens and tones muscles. Not to mention that the low-impact nature of reformer Pilates makes it suitable for people of all fitness levels, including those recovering from injuries, and especially for me who I am certainly the worst supporter of extreme cardio.\n\nBut it’s very unique benefit is that the controlled movements and stretches on the reformer help to increase flexibility and range of motion. Even if your goal is not to be flexible, it’s unbelievably effective in making you more flexible. This is because the reformer facilitates stretches that might be difficult or impossible to achieve on a mat, allowing for a greater range of motion. On top of that, the resistance springs help to safely and gradually increase flexibility over time, and the way the reformer is built ensures proper form and prevents overstretching. So, even if you don’t want a very active workout, it can be beneficial only for improving your flexibility and all the benefits that come with it.\n\n# The exercises\nIf you are already on your Pilates reformer journey or you are exploring the possibility of starting, make sure you incorporate the following exercises into your routine. We asked our dear friend & Working Gal Angela, who is a certified Pilates reformer instructor, and she suggested that whether we are beginners or at a more advanced level, we should definitely add some essential exercises that can boost our flexibility and overall motion. Let’s dive in!\n\n## Eve’s Lunge\n\n![reformer eves lunge exercise](https://assets.workingal.com/pilates_for_flexibility_230af8b744.webp)\n\n[_Photo source_](https://images.app.goo.gl/sXTk3viA15R1tCGN8)\n\nNamed after Eve Gentry, a protégé of Joseph Pilates, this exercise strengthens and stretches the hips and hamstrings. It helps relieve tight hip flexors that can lead to lower back pain, stretches the front of the hip, and improves balance and focus.\n\n### How to do it\n\n- In medium resistance, stand up facing the foot bar.\n- Place your outside leg at the front of the Reformer, as in the photo.\n- Take your inside leg, tuck your toes under it, and place it right up against the shoulder block.\n- Place both your hands on the foot bar, push the carriage back, then draw it back in.\n- Switch sides.\n\n## Elephant\n\n![elephant reformer exercise](https://assets.workingal.com/pilates_for_flexibility_ca25708e1b.webp)\n\n[_Photo source_](https://images.app.goo.gl/R1VzBuy84U6Mm49q7)\n\nAn exercise with multiple benefits that stretches the back of the legs and feet while strengthening the front of the legs. It also creates mobility at the hip joints and improves posture, spinal alignment, and balance. It can also help reduce pain and stiffness.\n\n### How to do it\n\n- In medium resistance, grab with your hands the footbar.\n- Place your feet on the carriage in front of the shoulder blocks.\n- Press your heels down while lifting your toes up, and engage your core muscles, pulling your navel in towards your spine.\n- Initiate the movement by tucking your tailbone under and rounding your spine, creating a \"C\" curve.\n- As you round your spine, use the muscles in the back of your legs (hamstrings and glutes) to push the carriage away from the footbar.\n- Engage your abdominal muscles to pull the carriage back towards the footbar.\n\n## Side splits\n\n![side split reformer exercise](https://assets.workingal.com/pilates_for_flexibility_150c6271a8.webp)\n\n[_Photo source_](https://images.app.goo.gl/pKDMz3VTqWX3CUKJA)\n\nPerforming the side splits on the reformer adds a unique dimension to the stretch, offering support and controlled resistance. Side splits are an amazing exercise since they activate your glutes, inner thighs, and quadriceps. They also improve your balance and coordination by lengthening your tendons and improving your range of motion.\n\n### How to do it\n\n- Use light to medium spring resistance\n- Begin by standing sideways on the reformer carriage, with one leg extended along the carriage and the other foot placed on the footplate, ensuring that both feet are at the edges of the platforms\n- With a straight back, exhale to open your legs wide apart by pushing the carriage away, engaging your abductor muscles,\n- Then inhale to bring your legs back together, pulling the carriage in, maintaining alignment throughout the movement\n\n## Swan\n\n![swan reformer exercise](https://assets.workingal.com/pilates_for_flexibility_299a8ab7e0.webp)\n\n[_Photo source_](https://images.app.goo.gl/MeVGte5aSPcdVC23A)\n\nThe \"Swan\" exercise on the Pilates reformer is a challenging yet beneficial movement that promotes spinal extension, core engagement, and overall body control. It primarily focuses on extending the spine, particularly the thoracic region. Also, the reformer provides controlled resistance, allowing for a precise and effective stretch. You can either perform the exercise lying on the long box or directly on the carriage.\n\n### How to do it\n\n- Medium to heavy resistance.\n- Lie on your stomach with your hands on the footbar and your feet against the shoulder blocks.\n- Press the carriage out as you lift your upper body off the mat, extending your spine and opening your chest.\n- Keep your lower back down by controlling your core.\n\n## Short Spine\n\n![pilates reformer side split exercise](https://assets.workingal.com/pilates_for_flexibility_acf40d6ab2.webp)\n\n[_Photo source_](https://images.app.goo.gl/JFCFv8LkQmoD4esF7)\n\nThe Short Spine is a challenging exercise that can indeed improve flexibility, particularly in the hamstrings and spine, while also building core strength and control. Strengthens the glutes and hamstrings, and improves spinal alignment by developing balance in the back muscles.\n\n### How to do it\n\n- Medium resistance.\n- Place the balls of your feet in the straps, heels together toes slightly apart in a Pilates V stance.\n- Your arms are long by your sides, palms down, or you can hold onto the reformer frame.\n- Keep your lower back down by controlling your core.\n- Engage your core to curl your pelvis off the carriage, lifting your hips.\n- Continue the curl, lifting your legs straight up towards the ceiling, or slightly over your head. Keep your legs in the straps and ensure they are straight, or as straight as your hamstrings allow.\n- Focus on using your abdominals to lift your legs, not momentum. The goal is to create a straight line from your shoulders to your feet.\n- Slowly roll your spine back down onto the carriage, vertebra by vertebra. Control the descent using your core until back in the starting position.\n\n### _Important note_\nIf you are new to Pilates reformer, make sure that you try those exercises with a certified Pilates instructor in order to avoid injuries.","pilates-flexibility",3,"is pilates good for flexibility, pilates exercises for flexibility, is reformer pilates good for flexibility, pilates for flexibility, ","If you are about to start Pilates reformer or you are already a reformer fan, then you know how good Pilates is for flexibility. The drama that is evolving around them transcends the typical [celebrity scandal](https://www.workingal.com/articles/lights-camera-chaos-4-hollywood-scandals), revealing deeper societal tensions surrounding power dynamics, workplace culture, and the complex interplay between individual identity and professional performance.\n\nFrom a sociological perspective, the concept of power is central to understanding the allegations. Lively's lawsuit, accusing Baldoni of harassment and a smear campaign, speaks to the inherent **power imbalances** that can exist within the film industry. The hierarchical structure of Hollywood, where established actors and directors wield _significant influence_, creates an environment ripe for potential abuse. This resonates with broader sociological discussions about power structures in the workplace, where those in positions of authority can exploit their leverage.\n\n![blake lively justin baldoni drama](https://assets.workingal.com/blake_lively_justin_baldoni_drama_879f07dddd.jpg)\n\nFurthermore, the allegations of sexual harassment highlight the persistent issue of **gender inequality** within the entertainment industry. While the _#MeToo movement_ brought increased awareness to these issues, the Lively-Baldoni case underscores the _ongoing challenges_ in creating safe and equitable work environments. The dispute becomes a microcosm of larger societal debates about consent, boundaries, and the ways in which gendered expectations can shape interactions.\n\nBaldoni's reported practice of his **Baha'i faith** on set introduces another layer of complexity. The _intersection of religion and professional life_ is a subject of ongoing sociological inquiry. While individuals have the right to religious expression, the potential for these beliefs to create discomfort or a sense of imposition within a **diverse workplace** raises important questions about boundaries and inclusiveness and how tolerant society is towards different perspectives.\n\nFrom a functionalist perspective, one might argue that shared values and beliefs can contribute to social cohesion. However, in a pluralistic society, the **imposition** of one particular belief system can disrupt the equilibrium and lead to conflict. This is particularly relevant in the context of a film set, where **collaboration** and a shared sense of purpose are essential for successful production.\n\nConversely, a conflict theorist would likely view the situation as a manifestation of power struggles and competing interests. The allegations of harassment and defamation suggest a clash between individuals vying for control and influence. The focus on Baldoni's religious practices could also be interpreted as a way to delegitimize his authority and _undermine his position_. The inherent power dynamics within the entertainment industry, which are often tied to wealth, status, and cultural capital, can exacerbate these conflicts.\n\nThe role of celebrity culture in shaping public perception is also crucial. The media's coverage of the controversy, the way that social media platforms are amplifying the voices of those involved, and the public's consumption of this information highlights the complex relationship between celebrities and their audiences. The way that the media is reporting the situation, is also being called into question, with some sources calling out what they consider to be **insensitive reporting**. Sociological studies of celebrity culture have shown how it can both reflect and reinforce societal values and norms. The way this situation is being presented, and consumed, is a reflection of current societal values.\n\nThe concept of impression management, as articulated by Erving Goffman, is also relevant. Impression management is a _conscious or subconscious process_ in which people attempt to influence other people's perceptions of a person, object, or event by regulating and controlling information in social interaction. Both Lively and Baldoni are likely engaging in strategic efforts to manage their public image and control the narrative surrounding the dispute. Their legal actions, public statements, and interactions with the media are all carefully calculated to shape public perception and protect their reputations.\n\n![blake lively justin baldoni drama](https://assets.workingal.com/blake_lively_justin_baldoni_drama_8383de027e.jpg)\n\nThe sociological lens also allows us to examine the role of social norms in shaping **workplace behavior**. _What constitutes acceptable conduct on a film set? How do power dynamics influence these norms?_ The allegations of harassment and discomfort suggest a potential clash between competing norms, with Lively's lawsuit challenging the prevailing power structures and demanding greater accountability.\n\nFurthermore, the concept of social constructionism highlights the subjective nature of reality. The way that individuals interpret and respond to the situation is shaped by _their own experiences, values, and beliefs_. What one person perceives as harassment, another may view as a misunderstanding. The legal proceedings and public discourse surrounding the dispute will ultimately involve the construction of competing narratives, each vying for legitimacy.\n\nThe situation raises questions about the role of social institutions in addressing workplace **misconduct**. The legal system, the media, and professional organizations within the film industry all play a role in shaping the outcome of the **dispute**. ","While it sounds like a joke to talk about saving money, considering what is happening out there, TikTok seems again to find a solution with its new microtrend which apparently is expanding and gets new fans day by day.\n\nOkay, let’s admit that we won’t base our money —and life—decisions on random TikTok trends. However, maybe the no-buy challenge can serve as a springboard for making more informed decisions regarding our personal finances—specifically when it comes to **saving money**. We all know that saving money is important; the news says that, financial gurus say that, our mothers say that; everyone with basic knowledge knows that life is unpredictable, but our money management shouldn’t be. Saving money is for your finances what flossing or eating your vegetables is for your health—nothing fun but something you _must_ do for your wellbeing. \n\n![no buy challenge 2025](https://assets.workingal.com/no_buy_challenge_2025_55ca6765cb.jpg)\n\nFirst things first, what exactly is a no-buy challenge? In its purest form, it's a period of time where you consciously restrict your spending to _only essential items_. Think groceries, rent, utilities –the stuff you absolutely need to survive. Everything else, from that cute new sweater to your daily latte, is **off-limits**. The duration can vary from a week to a month, or even a whole year (talk about commitment!). Some people go hardcore, cutting out everything beyond the bare necessities. Others opt for a _\"low-buy\"_ approach, where they set limits on certain categories, like entertainment or dining out. The beauty of the no-buy challenge is that _you get to define the rules_.\n\nNow, why would anyone willingly subject themselves to this kind of financial austerity? Well, the most obvious reason is to save money. By cutting out [impulse purchases](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-to-identify-your-bad-spending-habits) and [unnecessary expenses](https://www.workingal.com/articles/you-re-not-richer-you-re-just-spending-more), you can free up a surprising amount of cash. If you consider that your daily $5 latte adds up to $150 a month, you can save up to $1800 a year! Suddenly, that [dream vacation](https://www.workingal.com/articles/7-reasons-why-you-should-visit-athens) or down payment on a house seems a little more attainable.\n\nBeyond the immediate financial benefits, a no-buy challenge can also be a powerful tool for **self-reflection**. It forces you to confront your spending habits and identify areas where you're overspending. Do you really need a new pair of jeans every month? Are those subscription boxes actually bringing you joy, or are they just cluttering your house? By taking a break from shopping, you can gain a clearer sense of your relationship with money and develop healthier [spending habits](https://www.workingal.com/articles/financial-self-sabotage-why-you-fail-to-manage-your-finances) in the long run.\n\nAnother unexpected perk of the no-buy challenge is the **mental clarity** it can bring. In our consumer-driven society, we're constantly bombarded with messages telling us to buy more, buy now, buy the latest and greatest. This consistent pressure can be overwhelming and even lead to high levels of anxiety. Taking a step back from the shopping frenzy can be incredibly **liberating**. It allows you to focus on the meaningful things in life, whether it's your relationships, your hobbies, or your [personal growth](https://www.workingal.com/articles/5-free-coursera-courses-to-boost-your-career).\n\nOkay, so far, so good. But is the no-buy challenge all sunshine and rainbows? Of course not. Like anything worth doing, it comes with its own set of challenges (pun intended!). The biggest hurdle is **temptation**. Our world is meticulously designed to make us want to buy things—capitalism at its best. From the nonstop targeted ads on social media to the enticement of window shopping, it can be tough to resist the urge to give in. Especially in the early days of a no-buy challenge, you might find yourself experiencing serious FOMO or extended deprivation, like a kid who can see the toy but can’t touch it. Yikes!\n\n![no buy challenge 2025](https://assets.workingal.com/no_buy_challenge_2025_bfcb0314d8.jpg)\n\nAnd, since we live in an organized (allegedly) society, we should consider the social aspect of a no-buy challenge. Many of our social activities revolve around spending money, whether it's going out to dinner, catching a movie, or celebrating a birthday. Participating in a no-buy challenge might mean having to _decline invitations_ or suggest alternative, less expensive activities. This can be awkward at times, and you might even feel like you're missing out on fun experiences.\n\nSo, is the no-buy challenge right for you? The answer, like most things in life, is: _it depends_. If you're serious about saving money and you're willing to put in the effort, it can be a fantastic way to achieve your [financial goals](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-to-set-smart-financial-goals). However, it's not a magic elixir. It requires discipline, commitment, and a willingness to change your habits.\n\nNo matter how decisive you are, keep in mind that the no-buy challenge _is just a tool_.  It's not a solution to all your financial problems, but it can be a valuable step in the right direction. So, are you ready to give it a try?\n\nIf yes, the following tips may help you:\n\n1\\. **Minimize takeaway and start cooking.** There are countless easy recipes with simple ingredients you can make [within 10 minutes](https://www.workingal.com/articles/10-one-pot-dinners-you-need-for-your-busy-weekdays). Also, wave goodbye to your morning latte and make your own coffee at home. Treat yourself with your latte during the weekend or on special occasions (no, showing up at work doesn’t count as a special occasion!).\n\n2\\. **Shop smart.** When you don’t have time, you usually don’t pay attention to special offers or discounts, and you end up spending lots of money on things that you could find cheaper. Private brands in grocery stores are pretty much the same as the popular ones but cost much less. Do you really want to spend all those bucks on toilet paper? Don’t think so. At the end of the month, you will definitely see some improvement in your bank account.\n\n3\\. **Stop being a fashion victim.** Fashion trends change pretty much every month. The sweater you buy today will probably be out of fashion in 6 weeks. And then what? Being fashionable doesn’t mean you need to renew your closet every month. Take some of your valuable time and rearrange your closet. What do you wear and what don’t you wear? While doing this, you will definitely find pieces that were hidden, and you have forgotten about them. Use them as if you just bought them. Nobody will tell the difference, and you will cover your —emotional, mainly—need for new clothes.","is-no-buy-challenge-the-solution-to-saving-money","no buy challenge, no buy 2025, no buy challenger 2025, no buy challenge tiktok","A no-buy (or low-buy) period helps you to gain awareness of how the market manipulates, self-control over your own spending, and helpful habits of living more intentionally. Do you find yourself in a vicious cycle where something seems to hold you back just when you go to improve your relationship with money?_\n\nYou are not alone, and it’s not a rare thing. **We've all been there**. We know we should save more, budget, and invest wisely. Yet, month after month, we fall short of our financial goals, [even though they are smart](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-to-set-smart-financial-goals). It's easy to blame external factors –the government and inflation that are responsible for the high cost of living, unexpected expenses, or a salary that doesn’t seem to rise. While these can certainly play a role, often, the biggest obstacle to **financial success** isn't the market or the economy but ourselves. We sabotage our _financial well-being_ through ingrained behaviors and thought patterns that keep us in a financial frustration cycle. Understanding these self-sabotaging tendencies is the first step towards leaving the bad financial decisions behind and achieving true financial freedom.\n\n## The psychology behind poor financial habits\n\nFinancial decisions aren't purely rational. They're deeply intertwined with our emotions, beliefs, and past experiences. This complex interplay can lead us down a path of self-sabotage, even when we consciously desire financial stability. The most common reasons behind our poor financial decisions are a mix of psychology along with modern consumerism.\n\nOne of the most prevalent reasons that sabotage us financially is the fear of scarcity. It stems from a deep-seated belief that _resources are limited and that we'll never have enough_. This fear can manifest as hoarding money (even when it's not being used effectively) or, paradoxically, as reckless spending, driven by the feeling that _\"it doesn't matter anyway.\"_ Aka, **FOMO** at its best. The fear of scarcity creates a _self-fulfilling prophecy_, preventing us from taking calculated risks that could improve our financial situation.\n\n#### Another reason we sabotage ourselves is the instant **gratification** we get from a purchase. \n\n![financial self-sabotage](https://assets.workingal.com/financial_self_sabotage_f95b381f53.jpg)\n\nImpulse buying can be incredibly alluring, especially in our [consumer-driven society](https://www.workingal.com/articles/christmas-gift-exchange-an-ode-to-consumerism). However, impulse buying often masks deeper emotional needs, such as a desire for validation or a temporary escape from stress. However, while the momentary pleasure is undeniable, the long-term consequences –mounting debt and a depleted savings account– can devastate our finances. Similar to impulse buying, **emotional spending** is driven by our feelings. We might splurge after a bad day, reward ourselves for a _minor accomplishment_, or use shopping as a way to cope with anxiety or depression. This type of spending is rarely aligned with our financial goals and can quickly spiral out of control.\n\nEven though I believe in education and all it has to offer for individuals and societies, school doesn’t prepare us for financial education and literacy. Many people avoid dealing with their finances simply because t_hey don't understand the basics_. Concepts like budgeting, investing, and compound interest can seem intimidating and difficult to understand, which often results in [procrastination](https://www.workingal.com/articles/why-do-we-procrastinate) and avoidance of taking actual care of their finances. This lack of knowledge perpetuates the cycle of poor financial decisions, as individuals are not adequately equipped to make informed choices. The lack of financial education can make financial planning overwhelming, especially if you're starting from a _place of debt_ or financial insecurity. Putting off tasks like creating a budget, reviewing your **investments**, or paying bills can lead to missed opportunities, late fees, and a growing sense of anxiety.\n\nThe result of this sabotage is engaging in negative self-talk. Thoughts like _\"I'm just not good with money\"_ or _\"I'll never be able to save enough\"_ can undermine our efforts and discourage us from even trying to restore and fix our financial situation.\n\nAnother psychological factor that leads to **poor financial decisions** is a sense of entitlement, which can lead to overspending and a disregard for financial responsibility. Some people with this mindset may feel they deserve certain things, regardless of their financial situation. And to cover their _lifestyle choices_, they accumulate significant amounts of debt, live beyond their means, and show a general lack of concern for the future.\n\n## How to avoid financial self-sabotage\n\nIf you feel like you are sabotaging your own finances, it’s important to acknowledge your weak spots and have the willingness to change, even if this means that you make some hard decisions and lifestyle choices. According to financial experts, the following strategies are proven to help as long as you stick with them and don’t give up the effort.\n\n### Educate yourself\n\nTake the time to learn about personal finance. It may seem intimidating, but it is valuable for future financial decisions and choices. Since the **educational system** doesn’t yet support financial education, you need to start your own research. Read books and articles, or take a budgeting, investing, and debt management course. The internet is full of practical and well-structured sources that give you all the necessary knowledge for your **personal finances**. The more you know, the more confident you'll become in your financial decision-making. You can start [here](https://www.workingal.com/articles/be-financially-fit-your-101-guide-ebook).\n\n### Identify your triggers\n\n![financial self-sabotage](https://assets.workingal.com/financial_self_sabotage_80c380fac8.jpg)\n\nPay attention to the situations, emotions, and thoughts that precede your poor financial decisions. Are you more likely to overspend when you're stressed? Do you tend to avoid looking at your bank statements when you're feeling anxious? Or do you feel the FOMO if you don’t have the latest designer bag? The first and most crucial step to managing your finances is identifying your triggers and what causes you to spend irrationally.\n\n### Organize and manage expectations\n\nKnowing how to create a budget is probably the easiest to learn and the most essential tool for managing your finances. A _well-organized and structured budget_ allows you to track your income and expenses, specify areas where you can cut back, and allocate funds toward your financial goals. For instance, if you track what goes in and out, you can understand where your money goes and decide how to stop overspending. Sometimes, when we don’t see it written, we cannot understand that we spent a significant amount of money to buy 3 extra foundations we don’t need. Also, **saving money** is more painless when you have a budget since you can allocate it accordingly every month. However, you need to manage your expectations when you start saving money. _Don't try to change everything at once;_ start with small, achievable goals, such as saving a certain amount each month or paying off a small debt. This way, you won’t overwhelm yourself, and month by month, you'll **build momentum** and confidence to tackle more significant challenges as you achieve these goals.\n\n### Seek Professional Help\n\nIf you're struggling to overcome your self-sabotaging behaviors on your own, maybe it’s time you sought help from a financial advisor or therapist. According to psychologists, there is [a link between finances and mental health](https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/tips-for-everyday-living/money-and-mental-health/the-link-between-money-and-mental-health/#:~:text=If%20you're%20feeling%20low,re%20experiencing%20mania%20or%20hypomania.), and you may spend your money as a response to a mental health issue. For this reason, maybe you should consider allocating some funds to an experienced financial advisor who can provide **guidance** on budgeting, investing, and debt management or a therapist who can help you address the underlying emotional issues that are contributing to your financial problems.\n\n#### If you are reading this article, then you have made the first step to make your financial situation sustainable and plan your financial future ahead. Most of us haven’t inherited a big pile of money, so we have to work to make ends meet. And apart from work there is life and everything that comes with it: family gatherings, friends we miss and haven’t spoken to for a long time, kids with numerous responsibilities and needs, different home errands, and the list keeps going. _But how did we manage to be so busy and not have enough time for the fun things of life?_\n\nIf we break it down, all this busyness often masks a deeper problem: **a lack of productivity**. We're running around like chickens with our heads cut off, but are we actually getting anything meaningful done? We have made busyness **equal to** [**success**](https://www.workingal.com/articles/habits-of-successful-women), and we are almost ashamed to say to someone that we are not busy enough and our calendar is not full for at least 18 hours a day, or else we fear that we won’t be as successful as everyone else. And we end up feeling guilty when we have time to dedicate to more fun activities and not a dull errand.\n\n### So, why is busyness so detrimental?\n\n![how to stop being busy](https://assets.workingal.com/how_to_stop_being_busy_1e6580fb85.jpg)\n\nI admit I have always had things on my plate every day and there were times that I felt very overwhelmed by how busy I was. And yes, I was one of those who always responded, _“I’m so busy, I can barely pay attention to you for more than 1 minute.”_ Was I, though? Not as much as I thought. Or, to put it another way, I had things to do, but my procrastination levels were so high level that I didn’t understand that it wasn’t the _“busyness”_ I thought that would let me enjoy life but the lack of productivity that kept me from [managing my time](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-to-manage-your-time-effectively). I recently heard a great podcast from Business Insider in which the guest remarked that _success doesn’t require being busy._ The truth is, being busy doesn't necessarily equate to being productive. In fact, it can be quite the opposite.\n\n## Busyness breeds stress and burnout\n\nConstantly feeling rushed and overwhelmed **impacts** our mental and physical health. Chronic stress leads to burnout, which can manifest as exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced performance. Notably, according to [a survey](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2020/02/05/how-americans-feel-about-the-satisfactions-and-stresses-of-modern-life/), 60% of U.S. adults said they at least sometimes felt too busy to enjoy life. You might be \"busy,\" but you're not performing best.\n\n## Busyness leads to poor decision-making\n\nWhen we're constantly trying to deal with multiple tasks and deadlines, we often make hasty decisions. We don't have the time or **mental space** to evaluate options and consider the consequences properly, giving space to costly mistakes and setbacks.\n\n## Busyness prevents deep work\n\nMeaningful work requires [focus and concentration](https://www.workingal.com/articles/7-ways-to-improve-concentration-in-everything-you-do). Constantly switching between tasks and responding to interruptions hinders our ability to engage in **deep work**, the kind of focused effort that produces truly valuable results. We become masters of surface-level activity but struggle to make real progress.\n\n## Busyness sacrifices quality for quantity\n\nWhen the primary goal is to simply _\"get things done,\"_ quality often suffers. We rush through tasks, overlooking details and making careless errors, which can impact our reputation and undermine our efforts.\n\n## Busyness steals our time\n\n![how to stop being busy](https://assets.workingal.com/how_to_stop_being_busy_e910c357aa.jpg)\n\nIronically, all this \"busyness\" can actually make us less efficient. We spend so much time reacting to immediate demands that we don't have time to plan and **prioritize**, leading us to wasted effort and a feeling of constantly chasing our tails.\n\n## Busyness impacts our well-being\n\nWhen we're always busy, we neglect our personal lives, relationships, and well-being. We sacrifice sleep, exercise, and leisure activities, which ultimately undermines our productivity in the long run.\n\n# How to break free\n\nIf you are in the vicious circle of busyness, it’s not always easy to recognize the significance of taking a step back and realizing that you need to slow down and evaluate your time, priorities, and the results of your constant effort. However, the strategies below worked from the escape from my _“busy girl era.”_\n\n## I prioritized ruthlessly\n\nLife is not only our job—it takes a considerable part of it, and we need to be able to fit in 24 hours of work, rest, and **fun time**. So, I had a bazillion tasks‚ including fun time with friends and family, and I needed to fit them all in 16 hours (8 hours are for sleep). So, I prioritized accordingly. The truth to be told is that not all tasks are created equal. I followed the **Pareto Principle**, which can be extremely helpful in such a situation. According to it, the way to be productive is to focus our energy on the _20% of tasks that will yield 80% of the results_. For instance, say that you have multiple tasks at work; which will get you closer to your goal? The goal would be to deliver a project, get that promotion, or prepare an offer for a client. Pick those 2-3 that help you get there and let the other down on your [to-do list](https://www.workingal.com/articles/your-monthly-to-do-list-with-our-favorite-quotes). For instance, if you have to deliver an urgent project that is critical and one that can be delayed but is manageable, focus on the hard one because this is probably the one that will _bring more money to the table_ and send an email of delay to the other. This technique is effective in the long run, especially if you are leading businesses or projects, and it is pretty effective in reducing the amount of busyness in your life. However, that means that you have to [learn how to say _\"no\"_](https://www.workingal.com/articles/5-things-you-need-to-say-no-to-to-be-more-productive) to anything that doesn't align with your priorities, aka redirect phone calls to your voicemail, and not take over urgent projects for the foreseeable future.\n\n## I planned my day ahead\n\nEvery day, I used to wake up and just react to whatever came my way. This made my day a roller-coaster of tasks, meetings, and unforeseeable **commitments**, and at the end of the day, instead of Netflix and chilling, I had to finish tasks that stayed behind. Things are not as unexpected as we think, so it’s better to take some time each day to plan our tasks and allocate specific time blocks for focused work. This will help you stay on track and avoid getting sidetracked by less important activities. So, grab your **calendar** and allocate specific blocks of time for specific tasks. This helps you focus your attention and avoid multitasking, which has been proven to decrease productivity. For instance, my calendar contains not only my work commitments but also my commitments for my personal life. I workout **4 times a week**, which means that I wake up at 7 am, and by 7:30 am, I am already on the reformer for 1 hour. This time is blocked on my calendar; unless the world blows up, I stick to my calendar. Also, during the days I need to focus on actual work, I don’t take any phone calls and meetings for the time that is blocked on my calendar. When making dinner, I make sure to put it on the calendar and know how much time I need to make food. A good trick is to know what you are planning to eat each day so that you allocate the appropriate amount of time to do so.\n\n## I waved bye-bye to distractions\n\nMy phone is the extension of my hand, and I like it. However, I have cultivated a more productive relationship with it, and I farewell it the moment I have to do **actual work** (writing this article, for instance!). A distraction-free environment is of paramount importance for focused work. Otherwise, it turns into a **multitasking** show, and the work is never done—which takes time from the fun activities of life (aka, sleep and guilty pleasure shows). [Discipline yourself](https://www.workingal.com/articles/self-discipline-7-proven-ways), turn off notifications, close unnecessary tabs, and let your colleagues —or roommates if you work from home—know you need uninterrupted time. A pair of **headphones** and an inspirational playlist are a must. Just set the alarm for breaks (see below) and keep working, and then you will realize that the 8-hour working time was implemented for a reason and the work can be done in that or less time.\n\n## I ceased the one-man show\n\n![how to stop being busy](https://assets.workingal.com/how_to_stop_being_busy_fe5135cc2f.jpg)\n\nAka, I started delegating. I have often mentioned that my [control freak nature](https://www.workingal.com/articles/kill-your-inner-control-freak) wouldn’t let me leave control to others easily. Nobody can do it the way I do it, so I kept myself busy, depriving myself of fun, sleep, and socializing because I wanted to have control over everything. However, this is the principle of busyness and the opposite of **productivity**. So, my advice would be not to try to do everything yourself—you will fail and be disappointed. Nobody would do whatever it is that you do as well as you, but each person is different, and another perspective can be extremely helpful. The art of delegation is powerful; learning it well _can be a game-changer_. Delegate tasks to others who are better suited for them. This frees up your time and allows you to focus on your core responsibilities. For instance, at work, delegate the phone calls with clients who take up your time to people who have more **flexible schedules** than you, and, yes, your partner can make dinner tonight even if it’s not Michelin star worth. It’s just dinner. If you are invited somewhere and you’d like to bring something, ask your partner/friend/another close invitee to get something on your behalf and do that next time when you have more free time. Find solutions that won’t burden the people around you but would unburden your _“busy”_ schedule. Also, you have no idea how many people **get pleasure in helping others**; it’s a sense of fulfillment, and your loved ones would do something for you if that meant that they could spend more time with the actual you!\n\n## I forced myself to take breaks\n\nIt may seem counterintuitive, but regular breaks can boost your productivity and reduce your busyness levels. It’s not [possible to focus](https://www.workingal.com/articles/7-ways-to-improve-concentration-in-everything-you-do) on one task for a long time, so short breaks are ideal because they allow you to recharge and refocus, preventing burnout and improving your concentration. You can also **multitask constructively** while on a break. Call a loved friend or family member for a quick catch-up, listen to the podcast you don’t have time to do, or take ten minutes to start the laundry if you are working from home. This way, your brain loses focus and recharges because you do something different, and then you get back to being more **motivated** to keep working. The same applies for the weekends. Even if you have a lot of things to do, allocate enough time for [quality sleep](https://www.workingal.com/articles/5-reasons-why-good-sleep-is-important-for-your-physical-and-mental-health) and self-care activities. I usually work during the weekend, but I make sure I meet with friends or **do something fun** in between so that my mind gets a bit away. The more rested you are, the higher your productivity levels will be and the sooner you finish your tasks.\n\n## I adjusted and adapted accordingly\n\nBoth work and life flow change, so you can’t be rigid on your schedule every single day. Don’t expect to make the ideal life schedule and be **consistently productive** and carefree. It actually takes time to get the mindset of a productive lifestyle, but the truth is that you are not a machine. Also, life is unpredictable, so you need to be as flexible as possible to adapt to every situation without overwhelming yourself and constantly feeling busy. Do a self-check from time to time and evaluate your progress. For instance, have you left your **phone** away enough to do your work undistracted? _Are there any things that you could have done differently?_ Have you managed to delegate enough tasks so your life doesn’t seem like an endless to-do list? Be honest with yourself and see what else you can change or **improve** in the future. The movie's production was under **Wayfarer company**, of which Justin Baldoni is a co-founder, and their primary goal was to raise awareness about DV and create a film that could leave a positive impact not only for DV victims but also for the rest of the world. Baldony is one of the co-stars and the film director, and Blake Lively co-starred with him. At first glance, it seemed like an excellent opportunity to address such an important issue affecting millions of women —and men— worldwide and spread awareness around it.\n\nHowever, even though the initiative was very well accepted by the public, the storm clouds brewing in the relationship between Lively and Baldoni first appeared during the **film's promotion**, when many noticed that they both intensively promoted the movie —however, not together.\n\nDuring the **promotional interviews**, people noticed Baldony promoting the film alone and Lively with the rest of the cast and the book's author in separate events. Also, it was widely noticed that both parties promoted the movie _significantly differently_. Baldoni insisted on the importance of spreading awareness of domestic violence and gave a positive message to women, while Lively and the rest of the crew talked about flowers and treated the movie as a [rom-com](https://www.workingal.com/articles/10-rom-coms-for-a-lazy-week-night) rather than a DV-related movie. Things escalated during the premiere when Lively and Baldony _were not seen together_ on the red carpet, and people started mentioning that Lively was promoting her brands, her husband’s —Ryan Reynolds— new movie, and everything else but the actual movie.\n\n![it ends with us drama](https://assets.workingal.com/it_ends_with_us_drama_b07439a8b7.jpg)\n\nAnd suddenly, [Blake Lively was a target of substantial online -and offline- scrutiny](https://www.workingal.com/articles/when-did-blake-lively-s-public-image-take-a-turn) about the way she promoted such a delicate matter. Videos and old interviews started appearing, and suddenly, Lively became _the talk of the town_ —in a very discouraging way. She received —and is still receiving— enormous backlash about her past and current attitude, beliefs, statements, and general behavior. And then, almost 4 months after the premiere, which, nevertheless, was a box office success, Lively sued Baldony with **sexual harassment** allegations, as well as allegations that he and his PR team started a _smear campaign_ against her in order to destroy her reputation. The exact moment she filed her complaint, the _New York Times_ published [an extended article](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/21/business/media/blake-lively-justin-baldoni-it-ends-with-us.html) about the case, alleging that Baldoni not only harassed Lively but also tried to **destroy her career**, which resulted in her losing significant amounts of money from her brands. The article also published her complaint in which there were messages and communications from Baldoni and his team trying to influence the media and allegedly _“planting”_ stories in order to make her seem evil to the public. And it worked since a lot stood by her side, accusing Baldony and making statements about sexual harassment and how cruel the **media** can be for ruining people’s reputations.\n\nThis lasted for about 2 weeks, during which Baldoni faced a considerable backlash, ending in an award being taken away that he had just won just one day before Lively’s complaint, his co-host withdrawing from his podcast in support of Blake Lively, and his talent company immediately dropping him. And then he replied; and he replied with evidence that allegedly overturned Lively’s case since, as it seems from both his lawsuits, one against the New York Times and one against Blake Lively, **Ryan Reynolds**, and a couple of other people, there were messages that, according to his attorney, were _“cherry-picked”_ in order to destroy his reputation and that were misleading, leading to Baldoni losing jobs, money and his reputation. And then immediately things turned again, and now both the power couple Lively-Reynolds are facing vast backlash and are being _“canceled,”_ and Baldony seems to be gaining popularity. And every day is full of new revelations about the case, which, for now, is still developing.\n\nHowever, all this mess after the movie, apart from the distress and tension caused to the relative parties, has raised a lot of [food for thought](https://www.workingal.com/categories/food-for-thought) for the people who monitor it —and those who don’t. This case is _disturbing in so many ways_ and whether you have already picked sides or clearly don’t bother to care much, some matters can be really bothering and raise questions and concerns about not only Hollywood but the modern working environment in general.\n\n## The “we don’t think before we speak”\n\nAka, how we jump to conclusions instantly the moment we hear something. Most of us are lucky to be part of the **democratic world**, which implies that each one of us can form opinions and have the right to express them. However, being fixated on our views is not an extremely helpful skill, especially in an era where everything is fluid, and things move too fast, too furious. Even if things are fluid, jumping to conclusions, picking sides too quickly, or forming an opinion that we change after a couple of hours is at least concerning. As one professor of mine at college used to say, _“read the story, double check the facts, understand them, and then you will begin to form your own opinion.”_ It’s amazing how people get **fixated** on something one day, and then they read something else, and then suddenly, their whole mindset is completely switched. Also, we read one line and rush to judge without doing the appropriate research.\n\n## The media chaos\n\n![it ends with us drama](https://assets.workingal.com/it_ends_with_us_drama_6d78133fd2.jpg)\n\nIt’s incredible how the media nowadays present facts without any form of **filtering**, without proper research, and without trying to maintain objectivity in stating the facts. [Journalistic objectivity](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journalistic_objectivity#:~:text=Journalistic%20objectivity%20is%20a%20principle,encompasses%20all%20of%20these%20qualities.) has long been debated. While many argue that it’s impossible to retain it since journalists are people with opinions, which is good, the problem lies in when we need the facts and when we need the opinion. In this case, for instance, we read about it usually on the one side, and there is a strong sense of individual views rather than stating what is happening. Understandably, many factors contribute to writing on a topic, but the amount of **fake news** to only get views and sell is overwhelming and harms the whole media sector, cultivating doubts in the audience and making them seem not credible. The obsession over the little details that have nothing to do with the case is also unimaginable. Nobody cares if Blake & Taylor will keep being friends—or nobody who isn’t part of the friendship should.\n\n## The online rage\n\nIt’s unbelievable how much **rage** seems to be around and expressed on social media about others and cases that don’t even affect them directly. It’s very okay to express an opinion and even more okay to **disagree with others** —that’s the spirit of fruitful conversations. But those conversations have been replaced by online feuds, insults, and an extreme fixation on one’s ideas without even wanting to listen to the other opinion. Even when someone expresses a **neutral opinion**, they are slammed because they don’t pick sides. It’s nice to be passionate, but on the other hand, maybe we should choose the right things to be passionate about —and certainly not the things that have nothing to do with us. _How much do those people for whom you fight online really care about you?_ Not much.\n\n## The fact that domestic violence is treated with such “lightness”\n\nThe main topic of this movie and the subsequent legal battle is **domestic violence** and, in general, the subject of harassment and abuse. However, the topic is overshadowed by other substantial things that are unimportant and can divert us entirely from the essence. That said, we must focus on the critical parts of a case, which **in real life** is related to harassment. Whether it’s true or not, it’s better to talk more about that and less about what each one of the parties had done in the previous years. And for those who say that Blake Lively damaged the #metoo movements —if it’s proven that she lied about her allegations, then yes. But, on the other hand, why should we give a person the power to _“damage”_ something that others initiated and have been fighting for? I don’t think anyone has such power.\n\n## The lack of professionalism\n\n![it ends with us drama](https://assets.workingal.com/it_ends_with_us_drama_923ea1e516.jpg)\n\nWhat I have been monitoring during this whole case is the lack of professionalism that is prevalent these days. People who don’t read the books for the movies they are supposed to star, PR teams who reveal each other's _“dirty laundry”_ when things don’t go as planned, bullying and harassment, and the fact that grown people and professionals drag their friends and families into their business matters. This shows a lack of professional values, and it’s not justified because it’s… Hollywood. People should **sign contracts, provide safe environments for their employees, and fulfill their contractual obligations**. And if they have opinions on the workflow, they should respectfully address them to their colleagues and gracefully accept if they get rejected, no matter how “important” they feel or how “powerful” friends they have. Also, I would never bring my husband to clean up the mess if I had an issue at work —that’s why there are HR professionals. In real life, when employees encounter difficulties at work, they don’t call their family to help them overcome it, and certainly, the family doesn’t go and meddle with another person’s colleagues, employer, and business partners.\n\n## The lousy marketing tactics that are used\n\nApart from the media chaos mentioned above, this case brought to the surface the **dark side of marketing** and how it can harm reputations, influence people negatively, and impact perceptions. Apart from harming people and brands, these tactics negatively impact the marketing field and **make the audience suspicious** towards other brands. It creates a negative perception of digital marketing, which has more complications and harms serious professionals who invest in this field and actually use marketing in an ethical and constructive way. This is unfair, considering [marketing strategies](https://www.edl.gr/blog/it-ends-with-us-marketing-and-pr-lessons-learned) should be used carefully, with integrity, and with intention. Marketing and PR are not about harming our opponent’s reputation to show we are better; they are both about **communicating our message** respectfully and creatively to create a lasting impression and positively engage with our target audience—not creating impressions and rage among people.\n\n#### Photo credits\n[Cover](https://images.app.goo.gl/BW3Cc8WTAQKTsmtT6), [Image 1](https://images.app.goo.gl/nAZuztbeuqU3sSLt5), [Image 2](https://images.app.goo.gl/2RNSFiFyi6z9PJcQ6), [Image 3](https://images.app.goo.gl/aTsoQJiHZtxbV1B78)","what-bugs-me-in-blake-lively-and-justin-baldony-drama","What Bugs Me In Blake Lively and Justin Baldony’s Case","it ends with us drama explained, it ends with us movie, it ends with us drama, blake lively, blake lively sued, justin baldoni blake lively drama explained, justin baldoni sues blake lively","The It Ends With Us drama is the most popular Hollywood drama right now, but it is more concerning and annoying than we think. A [gig economy](https://www.investopedia.com/terms/g/gig-economy.asp), also known as the sharing economy or access economy, relies heavily on temporary and _part-time position_s filled by independent contractors and [freelancers](https://www.workingal.com/articles/what-are-the-biggest-challenges-freelancers-face) rather than full-time permanent employees.\n\nThe gig economy encompasses short-term contracts, often facilitated through **online platforms**. You can think of freelance writers, graphic designers, online tutors, and even handymen offering their services through apps. We are talking about primarily independent work, rather than **traditional employment**. \n\nEven though it sounds like a newly invented model, in reality, the term _\"gig\"_ was first used by jazz musicians around 1915 to refer to their live performances. This highlights the transient and project-based nature of their work. Before the rise of factories and mass production, many people worked multiple jobs or engaged in short-term tasks to make a living. This was a form of gig work driven by the needs of an **agricultural economy**. The rise of factories led to a shift towards stable, full-time employment. Gig work declined as people sought the security of regular wages and benefits. The concept of temporary and contract work started to reappear, particularly in industries like construction and IT. The rise of staffing agencies facilitated this. \n\n### However, it was the Internet Era that revolutionized the gig economy.\n\nOnline platforms like Craigslist (founded in 1995) and Elance (now [Upwork](https://www.upwork.com/)) made it easier for freelancers to connect with clients and find short-term projects. The rise of mobile technology and apps like _Uber, Airbnb, and TaskRabbit_ has accelerated the gig economy's growth in the 21st century. These platforms have made it easier than ever for people to offer their services on demand. And since then, it has been rising globally. In the United States, [more than 36% of the workforce](https://teamstage.io/gig-economy-statistics), or about 57 million people, work in the gig economy. This includes people who work in the gig economy as their primary or secondary job. \n\nBut what makes the gig economy so popular? Well, there are a lot of factors that contribute to making it such a tempting opportunity.\n\nThe Pros: Freedom and Flexibility\n---------------------------------\n\nThe most frequently cited advantage of the gig economy is **flexibility**. You set your own hours, choose the **projects** you want to work on, and can often work from anywhere with an internet connection. This can be incredibly appealing for parents, students, or anyone seeking a [better work-life balance](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-to-maintain-your-work-life-balance). \n\n![the gig economy](https://assets.workingal.com/the_gig_economy_702aa115ff.jpg)\n\nThe gig economy also provides you with more **autonomy**. That means that you're your own boss, and you make the decisions about your work, schedule, and rates (within reason, of course). \n\nAlso, while income can be variable, some gig workers can earn more than they would in traditional employment, especially if they have specialized skills or are willing to put in the extra effort. For example, if you are eager to **work more**, then you get paid for those extra hours, which sometimes is not the case when you are a full-time employee.\n\nOne of the most exciting things about the gig economy is that you can have a **wide range** of opportunities, explore different fields, try new things, and avoid the monotony of a **9-to-5 job**. And if you are a lifelong learning fan, working in the gig economy can help you develop valuable skills, build your **portfolio**, and gain experience in your chosen field. \n\nThe Cons: Uncertainty and Instability\n-------------------------------------\n\nWhile the freedom is attractive, the gig economy also comes with its share of challenges. The biggest one is **uncertainty**. Work can be unpredictable, leading to **unstable income**. The work is not guaranteed every month, so there might be feast or famine periods, making [budgeting](https://www.workingal.com/articles/be-financially-fit-your-101-guide-ebook) difficult. When you work project-by-project, there is a big chance that you won’t get another one soon enough to balance your finances, and this can be challenging, especially if you are not budgeting accordingly.\n\nAlso, another important thing that usually works as an obstacle is that, unlike traditional employees, gig workers typically don't receive **benefits** like health insurance, paid time off, or retirement contributions. You're responsible for these costs, and keeping up with the expenses may be challenging when the projects don't constantly flow.\n\n**Taxation** is also tricky since, as an independent contractor, you'll be responsible for paying self-employment taxes, which can be higher than those withheld from a _regular paycheck_. Depending on the country you are taxed, the state may see you as an entrepreneur—and tax you as such, which may seem like a financial tragedy at the end of the year. \n\nDepending on your field, you might face intense **competition** from other gig workers, which can drive down rates and make it harder to find consistent work. It’s common for new gig workers to lower their prices in order to get more jobs and build their portfolio, which can harm the whole field and let the experienced ones out of work. Also, many gig workers rely on online platforms to find work. Changes in **platform policies**, algorithms, or fees can significantly impact their income, and they end up spending days or months working on a project and then having the platform get a massive chunk of their earnings.\n\nAnother aspect that gig workers have to deal with is that working independently can sometimes be **isolating**. You might miss out on a traditional workplace's social interaction and camaraderie, which can cause reduced productivity and [mental health challenges](https://www.workingal.com/articles/does-our-diet-reflect-our-mental-state).\n\nIs the Gig Economy Right for You?\n---------------------------------\n\n![the gig economy](https://assets.workingal.com/the_gig_economy_4461c383ab.jpg)\n\nIf you are looking for a second job or thinking that the 9-5 working style is not what you are looking for in life, then you can consider joining the _gig economy workforce_. However, you need to ask yourself and think thoroughly about whether it’s the right thing for you in the long term or whether it could be something you could do for a little while. The answer depends on your **personal** circumstances, personality, and goals. \n\n**Financial stability is paramount.** Can you comfortably deal with the unpredictable nature of gig income, where projects and paychecks can fluctuate significantly? Are you prepared to manage your own finances, including _setting aside funds for taxes_ (which are often higher for independent contractors) and securing your own benefits like health insurance and retirement savings? Beyond financial considerations, **self-discipline** is non-negotiable. The gig economy thrives on self-motivation and effective [time management](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-to-manage-your-time-effectively), as you'll be your own boss and responsible for structuring your workday _without direct supervision_. You must be comfortable working independently and staying productive without the structure of a traditional office environment. Sometimes, it seems easier when you have all day to spare, but do you really want to work 24 hours a day or during the weekends —yes, this can often happen, especially if you are working on big and demanding projects. \n\nFurthermore, a certain level of risk tolerance is essential. Gig work often lacks the **job security** of traditional employment, and projects can dry up unexpectedly. Are you comfortable with this inherent uncertainty? Do you have a **backup plan** or emergency fund to tide you over during lean periods? Of course, your skills and experience play a crucial role. Do you possess the necessary **expertise** to compete in your chosen gig field and deliver high-quality work that clients are willing to pay for? Finally, strong **networking skills** constitute a significant asset. Are you comfortable promoting your services, building relationships with potential clients, and actively seeking out new opportunities? The ability to market yourself effectively can be the difference _between thriving and struggling_ in the gig economy.\n\nHow to Make the Gig Economy Work for You\n----------------------------------------\n\nIf you decide to plunge into the gig economy, you must keep a proactive and strategic approach. First and foremost, focus on developing **in-demand skills**. Research current market trends and identify areas where your expertise can command a reasonable rate. Continuously update your skillset, [attend courses](https://www.workingal.com/articles/5-free-coursera-courses-to-boost-your-career), and learn all the latest trends in your industry to stay relevant and competitive. A _strong portfolio_ is your most valuable asset. Showcase your best work, highlight successful projects, and gather testimonials from satisfied clients. A compelling portfolio speaks volumes about your capabilities and attracts potential clients. **Networking** is also a necessity. You need to actively connect with other gig workers, potential clients, and **industry professionals**. Attend online or in-person events, join relevant online communities, and engage in conversations. Building a strong network can open doors to new opportunities and provide valuable support.\n\nDon’t neglect your finances. Create a realistic **budget**, meticulously track your income and expenses, and diligently set aside money for taxes (which can be complex for freelancers) and benefits like health insurance and retirement savings. Also, don't underestimate the importance of setting **clear boundaries**. The flexibility of gig work can easily blur the lines between professional and personal life, leading to **burnout**. Establish clear working hours, prioritize self-care, and protect your personal time. Finally, **diversify** your income streams. Don't rely on a single platform or client. Working with multiple sources provides a buffer against fluctuations in demand and ensures a more stable **income** flow. And who knows? Greece is one of the world's most renowned and popular tourist destinations, and even though Greek islands take pride in themselves, the capital of Greece has nothing to be jealous of. Athens is a name synonymous with **history**, with tales of ancient glories and echoes of a civilization that shaped the world. There are so many amazing things that this city has to offer, all enclosed in a lively (not [Blake](https://www.workingal.com/articles/when-did-blake-lively-s-public-image-take-a-turn), of course) and joyful vibe that combines ancient history with **modern energy**. And if you are still wondering why Athens is the place to be, we have seven reasons to make Athens your next stop.\n\nAthens is full of history\n-------------------------\n\n![why you should visit athens](https://assets.workingal.com/why_you_should_visit_athens_62685a42b7.jpg)\n\nIf history is your gig, then you probably know that Athens was a major center of ancient Greek civilization, known for its democracy, philosophy _(think Socrates, Plato, Aristotle!)_, art, and architecture. Athens is considered the birthplace of **democracy**, as it developed a system of government where citizens had a voice in political decisions. Walking through ancient sites like the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the Agora is like stepping back in time and wondering how ancient Greeks spent their days and making their decisions in the **Assembly**. Each corner of the city is connected to history, and you can literally find something of historical importance. The city is also packed with museums: the Acropolis Museum, the National Archaeological Museum, the Benaki Museum, and the list goes on. \n\nAthens knows food\n-----------------\n\nNobody can argue that Athens has a vibrant **food scene**. [Greek cuisine](https://www.workingal.com/articles/5-1-mouthwatering-greek-recipes-to-incorporate-in-your-meal-prep) emphasizes fresh, seasonal ingredients. Think vibrant salads with tomatoes and cucumbers, grilled meats and seafood seasoned simply with herbs like oregano and thyme, and creamy dips like tzatziki made with fresh yogurt and cucumbers. The [Mediterranean diet](https://www.workingal.com/articles/why-you-should-adopt-the-mediterranean-diet), heavily influenced by Greek cuisine, is renowned for its health benefits. It emphasizes whole grains, fruits, vegetables, olive oil, and lean protein, which can reduce the risk of heart disease and other chronic illnesses. Athens street food, the renowned _“souvlaki,”_ is one of the most delicious, wholesome, and comforting foods you will ever eat —at a very affordable price! Athenians know how to eat, and this is proven by the diversity of restaurants within the city, where you can eat from delicious “mezedes” (small dishes) to **Michelin-rated** Greek cuisine. And it’s not only the food per se. Greek food is deeply rooted in the country's history and culture. Sharing meals with family and friends is a central part of Greek life, and the convivial atmosphere often associated with Greek dining adds to its appeal.  \n\nAthens is truly hospitable\n--------------------------\n\n![why you should visit athens](https://assets.workingal.com/why_you_should_visit_athens_0559e985d5.jpg)\n\nGreek hospitality has been known since ancient times. Many Greek myths and legends highlight the importance of **hospitality**. For example, the story of Baucis and Philemon, who offered hospitality to Zeus and Hermes disguised as travelers, is a classic example of this value. The ancient Greek word _“filoxenia”_ translates to _\"friend to the stranger\"_ and embodies the core of Greek hospitality. It's a deep-rooted cultural value emphasizing welcoming and caring for visitors. Athenians are generally **friendly** and welcoming to tourists. You'll often encounter locals offering advice, directions, or even a friendly chat, and it’s possible that you will get invited to an event or [grab some drinks](https://www.workingal.com/articles/5-cocktails-for-your-new-year-s-eve-only) with locals. Sharing is caring for the Greeks, and they make sure that tourists feel like home! In Athens, you never hesitate to ask locals about anything, such as directions, restaurant suggestions, or even a bottle of water; they will make sure to get you what you need.\n\nAthens is affordable\n--------------------\n\nOne of the most remarkable things about Athens is that it’s a really **affordable** city compared to many other major European cities. Restaurants and bars have very reasonable prices without sacrificing quality, making it the ideal destination for those who want to explore a European [city on a budget](https://www.workingal.com/articles/europe-on-a-budget-5-affordable-european-destinations). Also, Athens has an excellent public transportation system (subway, buses, trams) that is affordable and can take you anywhere. Many of Athens' top attractions, such as the Acropolis and the National Archaeological Museum, are **free to enter** on certain days or for specific hours. Plenty of free walking tours, budget-friendly museums, and inexpensive day trips are available for those who want to take the most out of the city and enjoy its beauty. \n\nAthens has the most stunning views\n----------------------------------\n\n![why you should visit athens](https://assets.workingal.com/why_you_should_visit_athens_6f1a48352c.jpg)\n\nAthens is not a flat city; it spreads on a series of hills, which adds to its unique character and offers stunning views. As long as you are ready to **walk**, standing atop the Acropolis will give you memorable panoramic views of the entire city, stretching from the Aegean Sea to the surrounding mountains. You can see iconic landmarks like the Parthenon, the Temple of Zeus, and the ancient Agora spread out below. One of the most famous hills of the city is Lycabettus Hill, which offers 360-degree views of Athens, and if you are lucky and the sky is clear, you can even see all the way to the **Saronic Gulf**. There's even a funicular railway that takes you to the top, making it easily accessible. Another spot for impeccable views is Filopappos Hill, which is located near the Acropolis and offers stunning views of the Parthenon and the surrounding neighborhoods. It's a popular spot for both **Athenians** and tourists to relax and enjoy the scenery.\n\nAthens knows how to party\n-------------------------\n\nWhen you visit Athens, get ready for one of the best **nightlife experiences** in the world. You can find a variety of live music venues around the city, from traditional Greek music to modern jazz and rock as well as larger venues hosting international acts. The city has a thriving **club scene** with something for everyone. Whatever your preferences are, this city can undoubtedly accommodate them.\n\nDifferent neighborhoods offer distinct nightlife experiences; one day, you can visit Gazi for an intense nightlife experience since the area is known for its trendy clubs and bars, or the other day, you can enjoy your dinner along with some wine at a **live music venue**. Plaka, in the heart of downtown Athens, spread around the ancient Agora, can offer a more traditional Greek experience with tavernas featuring live music and dancing. \n\nAthens has the best weather\n\n![why you should visit athens](https://assets.workingal.com/why_you_should_visit_athens_ee7fd6749e.jpg)\n\nThe first thing that Greeks miss when they migrate abroad is the weather. Greece is known for its Mediterranean climate, which is considered very pleasant and accommodating. Athens is located in the southern part of Greece; hence, it enjoys **mild winters** and sunny and warm summers. The long days during the summer allow for plenty of time to explore the city and its surroundings. Winters are mild and wet with occasional rain, while temperatures rarely drop below freezing, making it comfortable to explore the city even in winter. Spring and autumn are generally considered the most pleasant times, with mild temperatures and comfortable sightseeing conditions, making it the ideal place to visit all year round. Also, Athens has over **300 sunny days per year**, or around 3,000 hours of sunshine annually, which means that you can enjoy the sun all year round, fueling your vitamin D reserves, as long as you don’t forget your SPF.\n\nImages: [1](https://images.app.goo.gl/gEQZwFLRvRkyEafd7), [2](https://images.app.goo.gl/aNrjVrprztTNWWkt8), [3](https://images.app.goo.gl/YjD91ehLiwNTm1MC8), ","7-reasons-why-you-should-visit-athens","athens, why athens is so popular, athens travel guide, reasons to visit athens, athens nightlife, athens hospitality, athens greece, visit athens","If you are planning your next vacation, then consider Athens, the Greek capital, to spend some days. We only recommend what's already earned a permanent spot in our routine._\n\nI’ve spent more hours than I care to admit opening online courses, getting through the first module, and never returning, therefore, I know exactly what that first tab feels like — ambitious, a little self-congratulatory — and I also know what happens two weeks later when life fills back in.\n\nThat said, the case for online learning is real, and I think it’s actually strongest for people who don’t have the time or money to commit to something full-scale. A part-time MBA costs tens of thousands of dollars and two years of your life (been there, done that). A postgraduate certificate requires you to organize your entire schedule around it. Most of us are working full-time, managing a life, and trying to grow professionally at the same time. However, online courses are not a consolation prize for people who can’t do “the real thing.” They are a rational choice for people who want targeted skills without disrupting everything else that’s working.\n\nThe courses on this list are specifically focused on soft skills, meaning the kind of skills that don’t show up automatically [on a resume](https://www.workingal.com/articles/resume-red-flags) but make a measurable difference in how you perform, negotiate, and are perceived professionally. Negotiation, [decision-making](https://www.workingal.com/articles/decision-fatigue), and time management. Well-being as a performance variable. These are the ones that determine whether your technical skills actually translate into [career progress](https://www.workingal.com/articles/expensive-mistakes-building-business-founder-lessons), or whether you stay competent and overlooked. And they’re the ones that are hardest to develop on the job because no one explicitly teaches them.\n\nThe courses I’m recommending here are also genuinely useful for building out a resume or LinkedIn profile, particularly if you’re in an early-to-mid stage of your career and looking to demonstrate competencies that your job title doesn’t yet reflect. Completing a University of Michigan or Yale course through Coursera gives you a credible credential you can cite. And while it’s not a degree, it’s not nothing, either.\n\nThe courses on this list are the ones I actually completed — or, in two cases, recommended to people I work with and heard back from. They are not the most popular courses on Coursera. They are not necessarily the ones with the most reviews. They are the ones where something shifted: a decision I stopped second-guessing, a negotiation I handled differently, a skill set I could actually point to when someone asked.\n\nOne practical note: Coursera offers a free audit option on most courses, which means you can access lectures and materials without paying. You won’t get the certificate unless you enroll, but the knowledge is there. I’ll tell you for each course whether the certificate is worth getting or whether auditing is enough.\n## 1. Decision Making - How to Choose the Right Problem to Solve\n#### Best for: Anyone who regularly has more work than time. | Time commitment: 10 hours | [Εnroll Free here](https://imp.i384100.net/9VMa24)\n\nThe title sounds like a soft-skills seminar but it isn't. This course is fundamentally about cognitive efficiency — identifying which problems are actually worth your attention, and how to structure your thinking so you're not in a constant state of reactive decision-making.\nThe most useful module is the one on problem framing. There's a specific exercise where you describe a workplace problem you're currently dealing with and walk it through a diagnostic filter. I watched someone reframe a situation she'd been stressing about for three months and arrive at a completely different — and far more actionable — conclusion in about 20 minutes.\nThe certificate is worth getting if you're in a role that involves managing projects or people. It signals analytical thinking in a way that's easy to articulate on a CV.\n\n## 2. Create a Professional Online Presence\n#### Best for: If you've been told to 'build your personal brand' and have no idea where to start. | Time commitment: 7 hours | [Enroll free here](https://imp.i384100.net/5kMPqb)\n\nThis course is more practical than the title suggests. It walks you through how different platforms function differently for professional visibility, not in a [social media manager sense](https://www.workingal.com/articles/career-advice-from-influencers), but in a search-and-discovery sense. How does someone find you when they Google your name? What does your LinkedIn actually communicate to someone who doesn't know you?\n\nThe communication section is where it earns its place on this list. It's not about posting more. It's about being legible to people who matter to your career. If you're early-stage and have been vague about what you do and for whom, this course will push you to make some decisions you've been avoiding.\n\nAudit this one. The certificate is less relevant than the framework you'll leave with.\n\n## 3. Successful Negotiation: Essential Strategies and Skills\n#### Best for: Anyone preparing for a salary conversation or a client negotiation. | Time commitment: 17 hours | [Enroll free here](https://imp.i384100.net/L0x350)\n\n![coursera free courses](https://assets.workingal.com/coursera_free_courses_ae62a47151.jpg)\n\nUniversity of Michigan. This is the one I recommend most. The reason most people lose negotiations isn't that they [don't ask for enough](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-to-negotiate-salary-career-woman) — it's that they haven't prepared a proper analysis. They walk in with a number and a feeling. This course walks you through building an actual negotiation structure: your BATNA, theirs, the zone of possible agreement, and how to read the dynamic in the room.\n\nThe salary application is obvious, but I've found it more useful in client and supplier negotiations. The module on psychological tactics — how they're used against you, and how to respond — is something you will use within a week of finishing it.\n\nGet the certificate. This is one of the rare cases where having the University of Michigan credential on a profile or resume is a real signal.\n\n## 4. Work Smarter, Not Harder: Time Management for Personal & Professional Productivity\n\n#### Best for: If your to-do list is always full and you're always behind. | Time commitment: 8 hours | [Enroll free here](https://imp.i384100.net/enrGAz)\n\nUC Irvine. The title is generic, but the content is not. What this course does well is address the difference between being busy and being effective — specifically, the cognitive load that comes from how you store and process open tasks. The module on decision fatigue and its effect on output quality is one I've referenced in [conversations about burnout](https://www.workingal.com/articles/quiet-burnout-symptoms) many times since.\n\nIf you're someone who functions on adrenaline and constant reprioritization, this course will either make you uncomfortable or finally [give language to something](https://www.workingal.com/articles/body-language-hacks-for-authority) you've known wasn't working. Either way, it's worth eight hours.\n\nAudit is fine here. The value is in the frameworks, not the credentials.\n\n![coursera free courses](https://assets.workingal.com/coursera_free_courses_560407cb9d.jpg)\n\n## 5. The Science of Well-Being\n#### Best for: Particularly useful if you've optimized everything except how you feel. | Time commitment: 19 hours | [Enroll free here](https://imp.i384100.net/rEzo0D)\n\nYale. This is the most-enrolled course in Coursera history, which usually makes me skeptical. I'm including it because the premise is a good one: your intuitions about what will make you happy are systematically wrong, and the evidence for this is solid. Professor Laurie Santos is a cognitive scientist, not a wellness influencer, and the distinction matters.\nThe sections on hedonic adaptation and the connection between social investment and performance are the most professionally relevant. You won't finish this course and immediately feel better. You will finish it with a more accurate mental model of how you function, which is more useful long-term.\nAudit it unless you want the certificate for personal reasons. The credential doesn't carry professional weight, but the content does.\n\n## A Note on How to Actually Finish What You Start\n\nThe reason most people don't complete online courses has nothing to do with motivation. It's structural. You enroll when you're energized, you don't protect time for it in your actual schedule, and then life moves faster than your good intentions.\n\nOne session per week, blocked in your calendar like a meeting, is the only system that has consistently worked for the people I've seen finish things. Pick one course. Audit first if you're not sure. Commit to the certificate only when you know you'll see it through.\n\nThese five are the ones I'd start with.\n\n### _TWG Report 2026 — We're surveying professional women on AI, job security, and what's actually changing at work.
