Since everyone is using or getting stressed about AI, I thought I could at least give it a shot in a real-world problem to see how it can actually help. I opened a chat, I fed it my goals, my schedule, and my available equipment, expecting a sleek, customized, hyper-efficient training plan.

What I got instead was a masterclass in why artificial intelligence has zero physical intuition.

On paper, the prompt was airtight. In reality, the AI handed me a routine that managed to be simultaneously absurd and wildly generic. One day it wanted me to do high-volume plyometrics mixed with heavy compound movements that would have wrecked anyone's lower back; the next day, it handed me a routine so uninspired it felt like a warm-up for a warm-up. But I thought at least I could give it a shot and I realized that attempting to train with an algorithm revealed three very clear truths about fitness, technology, and why human intuition still wins every time.

1. AI Doesn't Understand Movement Mechanics or Fatigue

An algorithm can pull every exercise variation in existence from its database, but it has no understanding of how those movements actually feel in a human body when chained together.

It will blithely suggest pairing heavy spinal-loading exercises with intense core burnouts in the exact same sequence, completely ignoring how central nervous system fatigue works. It doesn't know that after forty-five minutes of deliberate work, your form naturally degrades, or that certain transitions between equipment are just logistically annoying in a real room. It views a workout as a mathematical equation, not a physical experience.

2. It Lacks the Nuance of Daily Readiness

The fundamental flaw with an AI-generated fitness plan is its rigidity disguised as personalization. A computer program doesn't know if you slept four hours last night, if your stress levels are through the roof, or if your shoulders feel tight from sitting at a desk all day.

When you work out with a real understanding of your body—or with a human trainer—you adjust on the fly. You dial back intensity when your nervous system is fried, and you push harder when you have surplus energy. AI can’t read the room, nor can it read your body language. It just expects you to execute the script while happily motivating you that you “can do it!”

3. Personality Matters More Than Perfection

Fitness isn't just about output; it's about engagement. The routine the AI generated was technically full of "effective" exercises, but it was utterly soulless. There was no rhythm to the programming, no flow to the transitions, and zero joy in the execution.

Movement requires connection. Whether you prefer the precise, deliberate control of Pilates, high-intensity strength work, or outdoor conditioning, the best workout is always the one that makes you feel grounded, capable, and energized, and not like you're executing a checklist for a computer.

The Result

AI is fantastic for quick ideas, organizing data, or drafting a basic outline. But when it comes to the physical reality of moving your body, respecting your joints, and building sustainable energy, an algorithm is a terrible personal trainer. And you run the risk of injuring yourself trying to complete the session.

Use technology to track your metrics if you want to, but leave the actual programming to human expertise, and more importantly, to your own body's feedback.

","","ab87b7b1abcde0225e1e61c23bfd330550f5d729a87ad57673b7baf05cf19a6e",3,"I asked AI to design my workout routine, expecting hyper-personalized efficiency. Your elevated body temperature means you'll feel warmer during workouts and may fatigue slightly faster. Stay hydrated and don't be surprised if you need longer rest periods between sets. While you can estimate based on a typical 28-day cycle, individual patterns vary enough that tracking provides personalized data.

Simple Tracking Methods

Mark day one of your period on a calendar or in a notes app. Count forward to track which phase you're in. The menstrual phase is days 1-5, follicular extends to about day 13, ovulation occurs around day 14, and the luteal phase continues until your next period begins.

This basic method works for general cycle awareness, though ovulation timing varies between women. Some ovulate earlier or later than day 14, and cycle length differences mean phases don't align exactly with these day ranges for everyone.

Period Tracking Apps

Apps like Flo, Clue, or Natural Cycles use your menstrual data to predict cycle phases and ovulation. More sophisticated tracking includes basal body temperature, which rises after ovulation, or cervical mucus changes that indicate fertility.

These apps also let you log symptoms, energy levels, workout performance, and mood, helping you identify your personal patterns. Over several months, you'll notice consistent correlations between cycle phase and how you feel, allowing you to plan accordingly.

Note Your Patterns

Beyond just tracking your period, note when you feel most energetic, when workouts feel hardest, when you're most social versus needing alone time, and when cravings intensify. After tracking for 2-3 months, clear patterns emerge showing your personal cycle signature.

Remember that stress, illness, travel, and life changes affect your cycle. Don't expect robotic consistency. The goal is understanding your general patterns so you can work with them rather than expecting identical performance every day.

Special Considerations and Exceptions

Cycle syncing applies to people with natural menstrual cycles, but many situations alter or eliminate cyclical hormonal patterns. Understanding these exceptions helps you adapt the principles appropriately.

Hormonal Birth Control

Most hormonal birth control methods—pills, patches, rings, and hormonal IUDs—suppress your natural hormonal fluctuations. The bleeding you experience on birth control pills isn't a true period but rather withdrawal bleeding from the hormone-free week.

While you won't experience the same hormonal phases, you may still notice patterns in energy and mood, possibly related to the consistent hormone levels from your birth control method or other factors like sleep, stress, and nutrition. Track your personal patterns rather than following a cycle-based approach.

Irregular Cycles or PCOS

Polycystic ovary syndrome and other conditions causing irregular periods make cycle syncing challenging since phases don't follow predictable patterns. Focus instead on listening to your body's daily signals—energy levels, sleep quality, stress, and how workouts feel—rather than calendar-based planning.

If you have irregular cycles or suspect a hormonal imbalance, consult with a healthcare provider. Conditions like PCOS, thyroid disorders, or other hormonal issues may benefit from medical treatment rather than just lifestyle adjustments.

Perimenopause and Menopause

As you approach menopause, hormonal patterns become unpredictable with irregular cycles and fluctuating hormone levels. The cycle syncing framework becomes less applicable, though the underlying principle—adjusting your activities based on how you feel—remains valuable.

After menopause, when periods stop entirely, cycle syncing doesn't apply. However, the broader lesson of honoring your body's varying energy levels and needs throughout each day, week, and season continues to support your wellbeing.

Implementing Cycle Syncing Realistically

Understanding the theory of cycle syncing is one thing—actually adapting your life around it requires flexibility and realistic expectations. You can't always control your schedule perfectly around your menstrual cycle phases, and that's completely fine.

Start Small

You don't need to overhaul your entire life immediately. Begin by simply tracking your cycle and noticing patterns. Once you recognize how each phase typically feels for you, make small adjustments—maybe scheduling important meetings during your follicular phase when possible, or giving yourself permission for gentler workouts the week before your period.

Focus on the areas where you have the most control. If your work schedule is rigid, optimize your workouts and social calendar instead. If you can't adjust workout timing, pay attention to nutrition and rest to support your body through different phases.

Communicate Your Needs

If you have flexibility in your work environment, consider discussing cycle-aware scheduling with your manager. The more open we are about menstrual health, the less taboo it remains.

Give Yourself Grace

Life doesn't always cooperate with optimal cycle syncing. Sometimes important events fall during your low-energy luteal phase, or you have to push through challenging workouts during menstruation. That's reality, and it won't ruin your health or progress.

The goal isn't perfection but rather awareness and adjustment when possible. On days when you can't honor your cycle phase ideally, you can still support yourself through extra rest, nutrition, or simply self-compassion about not feeling your best.

Cycle syncing represents a fundamental shift from fighting your body to working with it. For decades, women have been told to maintain consistent performance regardless of hormonal fluctuations, as if our bodies operated on the same 24-hour cycle as men's testosterone patterns. Understanding your menstrual cycle phases and honoring their influence on energy, strength, mood, and metabolism isn't making excuses—it's recognizing biological reality.

When you align your workouts, work tasks, and social activities with your hormone cycle, you stop wondering why some weeks feel effortless while others feel impossible. You gain predictive power over your energy and performance, allowing for better planning and more self-compassion during naturally lower-energy phases.

Remember that cycle syncing is a framework, not a set of rigid rules. Your individual experience matters more than textbook descriptions of how each phase should feel. I have had some Pilates Mat courses over the years, so far away that I didn’t even know Pilates Reformer. However, due to chronic neck pain that deteriorated my quality of life for years, with constant migraines, vertigo, and complete intolerance for sunlight, my physiotherapist suggested trying the reformer.

For some reason, the world around me seemed to be highly into fitness those days, so I took it as a motivation to incorporate regular exercise into my life. I have been doing random workouts in different fields, but nothing seems to please my extravagant preferences.

So, I found a studio very close to my house and booked a first class just to see what I’m dealing with and whether Reformer is as good as it is marketed.

Well, I can admit I got excited from day 1, and I haven’t stopped being excited since then. To begin with, with only two classes per week, I soon started seeing results in my body. The migraines began being more rare and I felt my body more carefree and intense. Within 2 months, my abs started showing results, and after 6 months, I completely got rid of the neck pain, which didn’t get better due to the long office hours.

Since that first day, Pilates reformer has been a part of my life so much that when I miss a class, I feel bad. Reformer is a game-changer for your overall well-being and body and can do wonders for your posture. Let’s not forget that Joseph Pilates created it for that reason.

Just a little history

The Reformer is born

During World War I, while interned, Joseph Pilates worked with injured individuals. He began experimenting with springs attached to hospital beds, enabling patients to exercise even while bedridden. This experience was fundamental in the development of the reformer. The reformer was designed to provide support and resistance, making it possible for people with limited mobility or injuries to perform exercises that would otherwise be difficult or impossible.

Pilates aimed to create a system that would strengthen the entire body, improve flexibility, and promote proper alignment. The reformer's springs provide variable resistance, allowing for a wide range of exercises that target different muscle groups. The machine's design also helps to improve balance and coordination. Joseph Pilates called his method "Contrology," emphasizing the importance of mind-body connection and precise movements. The reformer assists in achieving this control by providing feedback and support during exercises.

Why Pilates reformer?

For a person like me who suffers from severe neck pain, it is important to find a type of workout that doesn’t increase the risk of injury but still helps work my back and neck muscles so that they gain strength. In general, even though the reformer does wonders for people with spine and neck problems as well as people who suffer from injuries, it’s an overall amazing exercise for multiple reasons.

First of all, the main principle of the reformer is to focus on engaging the deep core muscles, leading to a stronger and more stable core. This way, while we strengthen our core muscles, we enhance our alignment; therefore, we manage to improve our posture.

The exercises on the reformer challenge your balance and stability, leading to improvements in coordination and the resistance provided by the springs allows for a full-body workout that strengthens and tones muscles. Not to mention that the low-impact nature of reformer Pilates makes it suitable for people of all fitness levels, including those recovering from injuries, and especially for me who I am certainly the worst supporter of extreme cardio.

But it’s very unique benefit is that the controlled movements and stretches on the reformer help to increase flexibility and range of motion. Even if your goal is not to be flexible, it’s unbelievably effective in making you more flexible. This is because the reformer facilitates stretches that might be difficult or impossible to achieve on a mat, allowing for a greater range of motion. On top of that, the resistance springs help to safely and gradually increase flexibility over time, and the way the reformer is built ensures proper form and prevents overstretching. So, even if you don’t want a very active workout, it can be beneficial only for improving your flexibility and all the benefits that come with it.

The exercises

If you are already on your Pilates reformer journey or you are exploring the possibility of starting, make sure you incorporate the following exercises into your routine. We asked our dear friend & Working Gal Angela, who is a certified Pilates reformer instructor, and she suggested that whether we are beginners or at a more advanced level, we should definitely add some essential exercises that can boost our flexibility and overall motion.
