Is it possible to actually maintain a healthy relationship with our work, or should we just admit that, as adults, our jobs consume mainly the totality of our existence? And then, I started to think a bit deeper about whether “no-work weekends” are actually the solution to the problem, or, at the end of the day, if our work makes us happy, then we should go for it and spend as much time as we want.

Over the last decades, the shift towards a more balanced life has been in the spotlight, and many people strive for more sustainable work-life conditions, aiming to reduce the time spent on their job or at least spend a couple of days off from it.

Experts warn us that working excessive hours and being preoccupied with our job all the time is bad not only for our mental and physical health but also for our productivity and performance at work, and there have been numerous initiatives to protect employees from overworking and possible burnout.

However, despite improvements in the quality of working conditions and the protection of employees regarding their free time, especially during the weekends, and despite the importance of these initiatives, we have almost demonized the “working during the weekend” topic. And no matter how cool it is to have two full days off work, it can be equally dangerous to feel that it's almost illegal if we do.

Why Is Working Weekends Bad?

The truth is that the societal narrative is pretty clear: weekends are for rest, rejuvenation, and everything but work. We’re bombarded with articles preaching the gospel of unplugging, the importance of setting boundaries, and the dangers of burnout. And while these messages should be taken into consideration, especially in our increasingly “always-on” world, the reality is often a little more complex and a little less black and white.

For many of us, the idea of a completely work-free weekend feels like a distant fantasy. Perhaps you’re juggling a demanding career on top of a bustling family life, and those extra hours on Saturday morning are the only time you can truly focus. Maybe you’re a passionate entrepreneur like me, and your business feels less like a job and more like an extension of yourself, with ideas bubbling up at all hours. Or perhaps, simply put, you enjoy aspects of your work and find a quiet satisfaction in tackling a small task on a Sunday afternoon.

The truth is, whether or not working during the weekend is “bad” isn’t a universal decree etched in stone. It’s a deeply personal question with an answer that depends on individual circumstances, personality traits, and the very nature of our work.

The “On” or “Off” Rule

The first thing to consider is what “working” actually looks like for you on a weekend. Is it a frantic, stress-induced scramble to meet a critical deadline, leaving you feeling depleted and resentful? Or is it a mindful hour spent catching up on emails at your own pace, allowing you to start the week feeling more organized and in control?

There’s a vast spectrum between being chained to your desk for eight hours on a Saturday and simply spending 30 minutes responding to a few urgent messages on a Sunday evening. Perhaps your weekend work involves creative brainstorming in a relaxed setting, something that actually fuels your energy rather than draining it. Maybe it’s dedicating a couple of hours to a passion project that aligns with your professional skills, blurring the lines between work and hobby.

The key lies in understanding the impact of your weekend work. Does it leave you feeling anxious, overwhelmed, and like you’ve sacrificed precious personal time? Or does it provide a sense of accomplishment, reduce weekday stress, or even bring you genuine enjoyment?

The Balancing Act: It’s About Integration, Not Just Separation

The concept of “work-life balance” often evokes an image of two perfectly balanced scales, with work neatly confined to one side and life to the other. However, for many modern women, this rigid separation is simply not realistic or desirable. Instead, perhaps we should be striving for “work-life integration,” a more fluid approach where the different aspects of our lives can coexist and even complement each other.

For instance, if tackling a few small work tasks on a Saturday morning allows you to fully immerse yourself in family time on Sunday without the nagging feeling of unfinished business, then perhaps it’s a worthwhile trade-off. If spending an hour on a passion project on a Sunday afternoon leaves you feeling creatively fulfilled and energized for the week ahead, then who’s to say that’s “bad”?

The danger arises when work consistently bleeds into our weekends in an uncontrolled and demanding way, leaving us feeling constantly on edge and unable to actually switch off. People skills. While knowing how to use AI is a must, let's ground ourselves in a more enduring truth for your career: **Your people skills are your ultimate differentiator in this evolving landscape.**

## Why AI is Super Buzzy

Everyday, new headlines about generative artificial intelligence (gen AI) promise both that the future is brighter with more possibilities than ever AND that it’ll bring the world (or humans) to a painful end. A little balance, please!

It’s true. [Experts](https://www.mckinsey.com/mgi/our-research/generative-ai-and-the-future-of-work-in-america) estimate that up to 12 million jobs will be automated by 2030 (about 8% of the workforce). However, many more jobs will be reshaped or updated. **We need to make AI our teammate, not our enemy.** To do that, we’ll all need to brush up on new digital skills AND our human magic.

## Why People Skills are the Ultimate Differentiator

With gen AI sucking most of the air out of the #futureofwork conversation, I wouldn’t blame you if you thought digital skills were your number one asset. But they are not... People skills are.

In fact, more and [more employers are prioritizing people skills](https://www.cornerstoneondemand.com/resources/article/drop-hierarchy-why-people-skills-more-important/) during the hiring process. The work we do ultimately revolves around understanding the needs of, working with, and delivering value to other people, whether that’s our coworkers, customers, partners, or any other stakeholder. As technology handles more of the technical "hard skills," **what truly makes you stand out becomes your unique superpower.** And employers agree that your ability to connect with colleagues, lead with empathy, navigate complex relationships and decisions, and communicate persuasively are standout skills. These are the skills that AI simply can't replicate.

## Using AI to Free Up Time for People Skills: A Two-Step Approach

Instead of getting lost in the AI hype, consider how you can use AI to augment your intelligence and free up time for what truly matters: human interaction and impact.

- **Step 1: AI or human needed?** First, do a task breakdown for your day-to-day work. Then, for each task, decide whether AI can automate that task, augment, or assist you.
- **Step 2: Update your work mix**! You can think about work being three types of activities: transactional (tasks), relational (building relationships and collaborating), and transformational (applying expertise). Today, the average work mix for knowledge-based workers is about 50% transactional, 30% relational, and 20% transformational. Researchers suggest we should expect a [10-30% increase in productivity](https://www.mercer.com/assets/global/en/shared-assets/local/attachments/pdf-2024-global-talent-trends-report-en.pdf) in the coming years by mixing more AI into our workflows.

![AI & People's Skills](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/AI_and_People_s_Skills_82c7f6dcda.webp)

By automating tasks and using AI to help you with your more complicated work, you should aim to cut your transactional work by over 50%. Yay! **That gives you almost 2x more time to make work more meaningful and fun.** Let your expertise shine!

## The "Easy" 80% of People Skills: A Top 10 list

OK. Let’s dive into the core people skills that will boost your career and confidence no matter where you work. Thankfully, it’s not that hard.

### Here’s a Top 10 list that will take you far

1. **Listen**: Truly take time to hear and understand what someone is saying.
2. **Remember names**: People love this (and hate it when you don’t remember!) Bonus points for remembering a fun fact about them as well.
3. **Communicate clearly**: Keep things short, simple, and focused on why it matters.
4. **Show up on time**: Be there when you’re needed.
5. **Cameras on**: Showing up and meeting people face-to-face builds trust. Have trust? Give people the grace to turn the camera off from time to time.
6. **Give credit where credit is due**: Recognize and thank others.
7. **Ask insightful questions**: And you’ll look interested, engaged, and smart.
8. **Don’t pass the blame, and also don’t apologize frequently**: Focus on what’s been learned and how to improve.
9. **Ask if you don’t know**: Most people like to help.
10. **Don’t complain**: OK, occasionally we all do it; don’t make it a regular habit.

### Additional Pro Tip

![AI & People's Skills](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/AI_and_People_s_Skills_796b4c4136.webp)

There’s an endless debate about women being perceived as “bossy” or “aggressive.” We’ve been told, _We’re not bossy; we’re the boss_. Others say women are expected by both men and women to be softer and are rewarded when we fit the stereotype.

It’s all true. And it’s not. I recommend ignoring any advice in this category. Instead, focus on what truly gives you confidence. If direct language and a focus on data is your natural mode of operation, then do that. If a softer language and reliance on EQ is your jam, then do that. You can be strong and empathetic, and a good communicator in multiple styles. It’s confidence that’s the key.

## The "Harder" 20% of People Skills: Moving Onward and Upward

### Feedback. Self-Advocacy. Leadership

These are the people skills that are harder for most of us to navigate. BUT, **they are also the skills that help us move onward and upward**. Investing in these skills is totally worth your while. Let’s try it out:

Feedback. It’s supposed to be a “gift,” right? Insert eyeroll. Feedback’s often not delivered well and feels super personal in an ouch kind of way. Let’s flip the narrative. A different view: feedback is just information. It tells us as much or more about the person giving it as it does about us.

An example:

The Boss: You’re late getting your report to me every week.

Me: (grrrr) But you told us end of week is fine! And I sent the last one on Friday by 4:00.
The Boss: Other team members are getting theirs in earlier. And, if it was easy to read, maybe that’d be fine, but you could organize it better.

Me: (WTF!?! I used the Boss’s template!) Ok, I’ll work on it. (Double grrrr!)

After asking around and doing a little investigation on the down low, I discover that the real problem for the Boss is this: Their boss just added an early Monday morning meeting to go over team updates. AND, the Boss isn’t a fast reader, so they need a day or so to digest things. Rewrite:

The Boss: You’re late getting your report into me every week.

Me: (pause) Ok. My boss is now asking for team updates first thing Monday morning, and I want to represent us well. If you could send it over by the end of the day on Thursday, that’ll give me Friday to prep.

Me: Gotcha. I’ll adjust my schedule to make it happen.

The Boss: Thanks! We always suggest things we’ve tried and already love\\!*

Often relegated to beach bags and summer vacations, sunscreen deserves a permanent, prominent spot in your daily beauty routine, regardless of the weather or your plans for the day. It's not just about preventing sunburn; it's about safeguarding your skin's health, preserving its youthful appearance, and laying the foundation for all other skincare efforts to shine truly.

Whether you're heading to the office, running errands, or [working from home](https://www.workingal.com/articles/work-from-home), your skin needs daily SPF protection. One of my favorite activities is to test sunscreens (I never skip it even when there is a storm outside), and, so far, I've tested dozens of sunscreens to find the best options for working women who need effective protection without the greasy residue, white cast, or pill-under-makeup situations we've all experienced.

## Why Daily Sunscreen Is Non-Negotiable

The importance of sunscreen extends far beyond avoiding that painful, red aftermath of too much sun. At its core, sunscreen acts as a shield against the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. These invisible rays are the primary culprits behind a multitude of skin woes, some of which are immediate and others that manifest over time.

There are two main types of UV radiation that reach the Earth's surface and significantly impact our skin:

### UVA Rays (Aging Rays):

These long-wavelength rays penetrate deep into the dermis, the thickest layer of the skin. They are responsible for premature aging, causing wrinkles, fine lines, and loss of elasticity. UVA rays can also contribute to skin cancer and are present year-round, even on cloudy days, and can penetrate glass.

### UVB Rays (Burning Rays):
These shorter-wavelength rays primarily affect the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin. They are the leading cause of sunburn, tanning, and play a significant role in the development of skin cancer. UVB intensity fluctuates with the seasons and is strongest during peak daylight hours.

Without the protection of sunscreen, our skin is constantly exposed to these damaging rays. This daily assault leads to a cascade of adverse effects that can undermine even the most diligent skincare regimen.

## The Benefits of Daily Sunscreen Use

Integrating sunscreen into your daily routine is an investment in your skin's long-term health and beauty. Here's why it's an indispensable step:

### 1\\. Prevents Premature Aging

UVA rays are the silent agers, relentlessly breaking down collagen and elastin, the structural proteins that keep our skin firm and smooth. Consistent sunscreen use is the most effective way to prevent this photoaging, keeping wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging at bay.

### 2\\. Reduces Hyperpigmentation

Sun exposure can worsen existing dark spots (hyperpigmentation) caused by acne scars, melasma, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Sunscreen helps prevent the darkening of these spots and the formation of new ones, leading to a more even skin tone.

### 3\\. Lowers Skin Cancer Risk

This is the most critical benefit. Both UVA and UVB rays can damage the DNA in skin cells, increasing the risk of all types of skin cancer, including melanoma, which can be life-threatening. Daily sunscreen use significantly reduces this risk.

### 4\\. Maintains Skin Texture

Chronic sun exposure can lead to the development of sunspots (age spots) and a rough, uneven skin texture. Sunscreen helps maintain a smoother, more uniform complexion.

### 5\\. Protects Sensitive Skin

![woman applying moisturizer for sensitive skin](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/best_sunscreens_2025_47454fdb55.webp)

For those with sensitive skin conditions like rosacea or eczema, sun exposure can trigger flare-ups and irritation. Sunscreen provides a crucial protective barrier, helping to keep these conditions under control.

## How to Choose the Best Sunscreen for Your Face

Choosing the right sunscreen can feel overwhelming, but focusing on a few key features will help you find your perfect match for daily use:

• **Broad Spectrum Protection:** This is non-negotiable. Ensure your sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
• **SPF 30 or Higher:** SPF (Sun Protection Factor) indicates how well a sunscreen protects against UVB rays. SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks about 98%.
• **Texture and Finish:** For daily wear, look for lightweight formulas that absorb easily. Oily skin prefers gel or fluid textures, while dry skin benefits from lotions or creams.
• **Skin Type Match:** Acne-prone skin needs oil-free, non-comedogenic formulas. Sensitive skin requires fragrance-free, mineral-based options.
• **Under-Makeup Compatibility:** If you wear makeup, choose a sunscreen that doesn't pill or leave a white cast.

## The Best Sunscreens for Your Face: Our Top 7 Picks

We asked our working gals and dermatologists for their favorite sunscreens that protect, perform, and actually feel good on your skin. And if you're tired of white cast on melanin-rich skin, Black Girl Sunscreen is made for you.

## Frequently Asked Questions About Sunscreen

### What SPF should I use on my face daily?

Dermatologists recommend using at least SPF 30 on your face daily. SPF 30 blocks approximately 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks about 98%. The difference is minimal, so SPF 30-50 is the sweet spot for daily use. Anything higher than SPF 50 offers only marginally better protection and may feel heavier on the skin.

### Should I wear sunscreen indoors?

Yes\\! UVA rays can penetrate through windows, and if you sit near a window during the day, you're still exposed to skin-damaging rays. Plus, blue light from screens contributes to premature aging and hyperpigmentation. Wearing sunscreen indoors protects against both window-filtered UV rays and blue light exposure from your devices.

### What's the difference between chemical and mineral sunscreen?

Chemical sunscreens (avobenzone, octinoxate, oxybenzone) absorb UV rays and convert them to heat. They're typically lighter and more invisible on the skin. Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) sit on the skin's surface and physically block/reflect UV rays. They're better for sensitive skin but can leave a white cast. Both are effective when used correctly—choose based on your skin type and preferences.

### How much sunscreen should I apply to my face?

You need about 1/4 teaspoon (1.25 ml) of sunscreen for your face, or roughly two finger-lengths worth of product. Most people apply way too little sunscreen, which significantly reduces protection. If you're also covering your neck and ears (which you should\\!), use a full 1/2 teaspoon. This might seem like a lot, but it's necessary for proper protection.

### Do I need to reapply sunscreen if I'm indoors all day?

If you're indoors all day with minimal sun exposure, one morning application is usually sufficient. However, if you sit near windows or spend time outdoors during lunch breaks, reapply every 2 hours of sun exposure. The general rule is: reapply every 2 hours when you're exposed to sunlight, or after swimming/sweating.

### Can I use sunscreen under makeup?

Absolutely\\! In fact, sunscreen should be the last step of your [skincare routine](https://www.workingal.com/articles/skincare-routine-do-you-know-how-to-safely-mix-ingredients) and the first step before makeup. Look for sunscreens labeled as 'makeup-friendly' or those with primer-like finishes (like Supergoop\\! Unseen). Apply sunscreen, wait 5-10 minutes for it to fully absorb and set, then apply your makeup as usual. Many sunscreens now double as primers for seamless application.

### Is the SPF in my foundation enough?

No, the SPF in makeup is not enough on its own. You would need to apply a thick layer of foundation (about 1/4 teaspoon) to get the labeled SPF protection, which is way more than most people use. Always apply dedicated sunscreen underneath your foundation. Think of foundation SPF as a bonus layer, not your primary protection.

## Make Sunscreen Your Daily Non-Negotiable

Finding the perfect sunscreen is one of the best investments you can make in your skin's long-term health and appearance. Whether you choose a tinted mineral formula, an invisible primer-like gel, or a budget-friendly drugstore option, the most important thing is that you wear it daily.

All seven of these sunscreens offer excellent broad-spectrum protection, but the best sunscreen is the one you'll actually wear every single day. Consider your skin type, texture preferences, and how it fits into your routine. If you love the way it feels, you'll be more consistent—and consistency is what delivers real results.

Remember: sunscreen isn't just about preventing sunburn. It's about preventing premature aging, maintaining an even skin tone, protecting against skin cancer, and preserving all the hard work you put into your skincare routine. Even though I have a vague insight into my resolutions each New Year, the moment when I take them seriously is usually springtime. It’s probably the sun, in combination with the warmer weather, that makes me feel ready for renewal and rejuvenation.

These days, the air is lighter, the days are longer, and a sense of renewal hangs in the breeze. Spring has arrived, and with it comes the irresistible urge to declutter our homes and embrace a fresh start. But what if we extended this invigorating ritual beyond our closets and home office? This season, let’s turn our attention to a space that occupies a significant portion of our lives: _our careers_.

Just like a thorough home cleaning revitalizes our living spaces, a deliberate career refresh can clear away stagnation, boost productivity, and develop exciting new growth. Think of it as Marie Kondo-ing your professional life—keeping what sparks joy and serves your ambitions and gracefully letting go of what no longer fits. Don’t worry; we're not talking about drastic, overnight changes. This career spring clean is more about a thoughtful process of assessment, decluttering, and nurturing that will leave you feeling lighter, more focused, and ready to bloom in your professional journey.

# Declutter your professional landscape

![career spring clean](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/career_spring_clean_1824367b2c.webp)

Our careers, like our homes, can accumulate clutter over time—mine, for sure. But this clutter isn't always tangible; it can manifest as time-wasting habits, mental baggage, or a disorganized approach to our work. So, in order to achieve a more streamlined and productive professional life, we should tackle these layers. How? Let’s see.

## Tidy your time & tasks

How often do you feel like you’re constantly busy [but not truly productive](https://www.workingal.com/articles/don-t-be-busy-be-productive)? The first step in a career spring clean is to examine how you spend your most valuable resource: [time](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-to-manage-your-time-effectively). Try tracking your activities for a week, even the seemingly small ones. You might be surprised to discover pockets of time being swallowed by [social media scrolling](https://www.workingal.com/articles/digital-detox), unnecessary meetings, or tasks that could be delegated or even eliminated.

Once you have a clearer picture, implement strategies for ruthless prioritization. Familiarize yourself with tools like the [Eisenhower Matrix](https://www.workingal.com/articles/the-game-changing-technique-to-boost-your-productivity), which categorizes tasks based on urgency and importance. Learn to distinguish between what truly needs your immediate attention and what can be scheduled, delegated, or dropped altogether. Mastering the [art of saying “no”](https://www.workingal.com/articles/5-things-you-need-to-say-no-to-to-be-more-productive) to commitments that don’t align with your goals is also crucial for reclaiming your time and energy.

### Digital clutter can be just as overwhelming

Take time to organize your email inbox, create clear folder structures for your digital files, and explore project management tools that can streamline your workflow. Implement designated “focus blocks” where you turn off notifications and dedicate your attention to high-priority tasks. A [digital detox](https://www.workingal.com/articles/digital-detox), even for short periods, can significantly reduce distractions and improve concentration.

## Clear out mental clutter

Our minds can become cluttered with limiting beliefs, workplace stress, and lingering resentments. A career spring clean requires us to address this internal landscape. Take some time for self-reflection. What negative self-talk patterns do you recognize? What beliefs about your abilities or career trajectory might be holding you back? Challenging these limiting beliefs and consciously replacing them with more positive and empowering affirmations can be a transformative experience.

[Workplace stress](https://www.workingal.com/articles/stress-management-these-5-techniques) is often unavoidable, but learning healthy coping mechanisms is essential. Explore mindfulness techniques, deep breathing exercises, or setting clear boundaries between work and personal life. It’s also important to address any lingering resentment towards past workplace frustrations or difficult colleagues. Holding onto these negative emotions can drain your energy and hinder your progress. Consider strategies for healthy communication, forgiveness (for yourself and others), and focusing on moving forward.

## Organize your physical workspace (even if remote)

Whether you work in an office or a dedicated home setup, your physical environment has a significant impact on your [focus and productivity](https://www.workingal.com/articles/white-noise-for-calm-and-focus). A cluttered desk can lead to a cluttered mind. Take the time to physically declutter your workspace, organize files, discard unnecessary items, and ensure everything you need is easily accessible.

For those working remotely, the concept of a workspace may be more fluid, but the principle remains the same. Organize your digital desktop, ensure your equipment is functioning smoothly, and create a designated area that helps you mentally transition into work mode. Even adding a few personal touches, like a plant or inspiring artwork, can create a more positive and motivating environment.

# New growth & opportunities

Once you’ve decluttered your professional landscape, you’ll create space for new growth and exciting opportunities to flourish. This involves actively nurturing your skills, expanding your network, and strategically planning for your future.

## Refresh your skills & knowledge

The professional landscape is constantly evolving, making continuous learning a necessity. Take this spring cleaning opportunity to assess your current skill set and identify any gaps that might be [hindering your progress](https://www.workingal.com/articles/10-reasons-that-block-your-career-progress) or preventing you from pursuing your career goals. Research industry trends and identify areas where upskilling or acquiring new knowledge would be beneficial.

Explore various learning opportunities, including [online courses](https://www.workingal.com/articles/5-free-coursera-courses-to-boost-your-career), workshops, industry conferences, and mentorship programs. Don’t underestimate the value of learning on the job by taking on new challenges or volunteering for projects outside your comfort zone. Cultivating a mindset of curiosity and a commitment to lifelong learning will keep your career vibrant and relevant.

## Nurture your network

Your professional network is a valuable asset that can provide support, guidance, and new opportunities. This spring, make a conscious effort to reconnect with past colleagues, mentors, and industry connections. Reach out with a genuine interest in their current endeavors and share your own updates.

Attend networking events, whether virtual or in-person, with the intention of building meaningful connections rather than simply collecting business cards. Leverage professional social media platforms -time to refresh your LinkedIn page- to engage with your industry, share your expertise, and connect with individuals whose work you admire. Remember that networking is a two-way street; be proactive in offering support and assistance to others in your network.

## Plant seeds for future growth

![career spring clean](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/career_spring_clean_2929fce49b.webp)

A career spring clean does not only target the present; it’s also about strategically planning for the future. Revisit your short-term and long-term career goals. Are they still aligned with your aspirations? Are there any adjustments you need to make?

Now is an excellent time to update your resume and online professional profiles, ensuring they accurately reflect your current skills, experience, and career objectives—research potential new opportunities within and outside your current organization. Don’t be afraid to explore different paths or roles that pique your interest. Seek feedback from your supervisor or trusted colleagues on your performance and areas for development. This proactive approach will ensure you’re well-positioned to seize new opportunities as they arise.

# Maintain your career garden

A career spring clean isn’t a one-day task; it’s instead an ongoing process of maintenance and cultivation. Just as a garden requires regular tending to thrive, your career needs consistent attention to ensure continued growth and prevent the accumulation of new clutter.

Schedule regular check-ins with yourself to review your progress, reassess your goals, and identify any areas where you might need to declutter or adjust your approach. Embrace flexibility and recognize that career paths can evolve in unexpected ways. Be open to new possibilities and be willing to adapt your plans as needed.","career-spring-clean","spring clean, career spring clean, how to spring clean your career goals, spring clean your career","Spring is the season of fresh beginnings and letting go of the winter burdens and this is why you need to spring clean your career this season to nourish your professional life and prioritize what is good for you.
1261,"career spring clean.webp","career spring clean
"https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/large_career_spring_clean_3f623b5333.webp","large_career_spring_clean_3f623b5333","large_career spring clean.webp",26.49,26488
"https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/small_career_spring_clean_3f623b5333.webp","small_career_spring_clean_3f623b5333","small_career spring clean.webp",10.33,10328
"https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/medium_career_spring_clean_3f623b5333.webp","medium_career_spring_clean_3f623b5333","medium_career spring clean.webp",18.03,18032
"https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/thumbnail_career_spring_clean_3f623b5333.webp","thumbnail_career_spring_clean_3f623b5333","thumbnail_career spring clean.webp",4.16,4160,"career_spring_clean_3f623b5333",63.5,"https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/career_spring_clean_3f623b5333.webp","2025-04-25T20:17:18.406Z","2025-04-25T20:17:32.958Z
"Amalia","amalia","https://www.instagram.com/amalia.ka__/","https://www.facebook.com/amalia.kakampakou","Amalia is the Teacher. This is the moment when my energy drops, my focus scatters, and whatever willpower I had for the day starts to erode.

And what I've learnt after years of working and collaborating with nutritionists is that the food you eat at lunch is directly responsible for whether or not that happens.

This chicken tzatziki recipe is actually more than a meal, you can think of it as a nutritional strategy. The combination of high-quality protein from chicken breast, probiotic-rich Greek yogurt, and anti-inflammatory compounds from garlic and olive oil produces a lunch that sustains energy, supports [gut health](https://www.workingal.com/articles/habits-that-harm-your-gut), and does not leave you in a post-meal fog. It is also authentically Greek, fast to prepare, and works as meal prep for the full week.

If you want to understand how a Mediterranean diet actually supports performance at work, this is the right place to start.

Why This Chicken Tzatziki Recipe Belongs in Your Weekly Rotation
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Most high-protein meals marketed to working women are either boring (plain chicken and rice) or impractical (meals that take 90 minutes to prepare). This one is neither. The Greek chicken tzatziki bowl takes under 45 minutes from prep to plate, stores well for three days in the refrigerator, and delivers a nutritional profile that most professional women are actively missing in their daily diet.

Here is what the research supports, ingredient by ingredient.

### Chicken Breast: The Most Efficient Protein Source in Your Kitchen

Skinless chicken breast provides approximately 31 to 32 grams of protein per 100 grams of cooked meat. Protein is the macronutrient most directly responsible for satiety, and satiety is the thing that prevents the mid-afternoon energy crash that derails productivity.

The mechanism is straightforward: dietary protein stimulates the release of satiety hormones including peptide YY and GLP-1, while suppressing ghrelin, the hormone that signals hunger. A lunch built around 150 to 200 grams of chicken breast provides 47 to 63 grams of protein, which is enough to maintain stable blood glucose and sustained energy through the afternoon without needing to reach for a snack at 3 p.m.

![chicken with tzatziki](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/chicken_with_tzatziki_d2a1a1f61e.webp)

### Greek Yogurt: Probiotics, Calcium, and Cortisol Management

The tzatziki in this recipe is built on full-fat or 2% Greek yogurt, and the distinction matters. Greek yogurt strained to the correct consistency delivers probiotics that support the gut-brain axis, a bidirectional communication system between the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system that influences mood, cognitive function, and [stress response](https://www.workingal.com/articles/5-yoga-poses-for-immediate-stress-relief).

There is emerging but credible evidence that probiotic intake is associated with reduced perceived stress and improved cortisol regulation. Greek yogurt also provides calcium and B vitamins, both of which are frequently under-consumed by women in their 30s and 40s. This is a practical way to address that gap without supplementation.

### Garlic and Olive Oil: The Anti-Inflammatory Foundation

Garlic contains allicin and organosulfur compounds with documented antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Regular consumption is associated with improved immune function and cardiovascular markers.

Extra virgin olive oil is the correct fat source here. Oleocanthal, a polyphenol found in high-quality extra virgin olive oil, has anti-inflammatory activity comparable to low-dose ibuprofen at typical dietary amounts. Combined with its monounsaturated fat content, this ingredient is active, not neutral.

The Greek Chicken Marinade: How to Build Flavor and Moisture
----------------------------------------------------------------

The most common mistake with chicken breast is underpreparing it before cooking. Dry chicken is a preparation failure, not an ingredient failure. A proper marinade solves this.

### Marinade Ingredients

* 2 tbsp Dijon mustard

* 2 tbsp Greek yogurt (2%)

* 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

* 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice

* 1 tsp dried oregano

* 1/2 tsp dried thyme

* 1/2 tsp dried rosemary

* Salt and black pepper to taste

### The Technique

Combine all marinade ingredients and whisk until smooth. Score the chicken breasts lightly with a knife to allow deeper penetration. Coat thoroughly, cover, and refrigerate for a minimum of 30 minutes. For meal prep, marinating up to 48 hours intensifies the flavor significantly.

The yogurt is functional here: lactic acid breaks down surface proteins in the chicken, producing a more tender texture after cooking. The mustard acts as an emulsifier, binding the oil and liquid components together so the marinade adheres to the meat.

Cook in a preheated oven at 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) for 20 to 25 minutes, or in an air fryer at 380 degrees F for 15 to 18 minutes. Internal temperature must reach 165 degrees F. Overcooking is the primary cause of dry chicken breast.

The Authentic Tzatziki: The Technique Most Recipes Skip
-----------------------------------------------------------

![chicken with tzatziki](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/chicken_with_tzatziki_f99081ea17.webp)

Watery tzatziki is a technique failure. The excess moisture in cucumber is the problem, and straining it correctly is the solution. This step is not optional if you want the correct consistency.

### Tzatziki Ingredients

* 1 medium cucumber, coarsely grated

* 1 cup (250g) Greek yogurt, 2% or full fat

* 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

* 1 tbsp white wine vinegar or fresh lemon juice

* 1/2 tsp garlic powder, or 1 small garlic clove minced

* Salt and black pepper to taste

* Fresh dill or mint, optional

### The Non-Watery Tzatziki Method

1. Grate the cucumber on the large holes of a box grater.

2. Transfer to a clean cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer set over a bowl. Salt lightly and drain for at least 15 minutes. Then squeeze the cloth firmly to remove as much moisture as possible.

3. Combine drained cucumber with Greek yogurt, olive oil, vinegar or lemon juice, and garlic. Mix thoroughly.

4. Taste and adjust salt. Refrigerate for at least 20 minutes before serving to let the flavors develop.

The finished tzatziki should hold its shape on a spoon. If it is still loose, the cucumber was not drained adequately.

Three Ways to Serve the Chicken Tzatziki Bowl
-------------------------------------------------

Once the chicken and tzatziki are prepared, the format adapts to your schedule.

### The Bowl (Meal Prep Default)

Serve sliced chicken over a base of brown rice, quinoa, or a simple salad of cucumber, cherry tomatoes, and red onion. Add a generous portion of tzatziki. This is the format that stores best and works as a complete portable lunch.

### The Wrap (Desk Lunch)

Wrap sliced chicken and tzatziki in a whole wheat flatbread with arugula and sliced tomato. Compact, no reheating required, and still delivers the full nutritional profile.

### The Salad (Light Dinner)

Skip the grain base. Serve the chicken over a large bed of greens with the tzatziki as dressing. This format also aligns with what the research on Mediterranean diet and sleep quality suggests: a lighter, protein-forward dinner with limited simple carbohydrates supports [deeper sleep stages](https://www.workingal.com/articles/sleep-hygiene).

Meal Prep Notes for the Working Week
----------------------------------------

This recipe scales efficiently. Double the quantities and you have lunch prepared for Monday through Wednesday with no additional effort. Storage guidelines:

* Marinated raw chicken: up to 48 hours refrigerated

* Cooked chicken: up to 4 days in an airtight container

* Tzatziki: up to 3 days refrigerated (stir before serving)

* Assembled bowls: best consumed within 2 days

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can I use chicken thighs instead of chicken breast?
Yes. Chicken thighs provide 23 to 25 grams of protein per 100 grams cooked, slightly lower than breast, but the higher fat content makes them more forgiving during cooking. The marinade and tzatziki work identically with thighs.

### Is this recipe suitable for meal prep?
It is specifically designed for it. Cook a double batch on Sunday and you have three complete lunches ready without any additional preparation during the week.

### Can I make tzatziki without cheesecloth?
A clean kitchen towel works as a substitute. Wrap the grated cucumber in the towel and squeeze firmly over the sink. Maximum moisture removal is the goal, regardless of the tool.

### What is the best grain base for a Mediterranean bowl?
Brown rice and quinoa both slow glucose absorption through their fiber content, supporting stable energy. If you are managing carbohydrate intake, arugula, romaine, or shredded cabbage delivers fiber without the caloric load of grains.

### How does this fit into a Mediterranean diet meal plan?
This bowl covers the core pillars of the Mediterranean dietary pattern: lean protein, olive oil as primary fat, fresh vegetables, and fermented dairy. Paired with the meal prep framework in the [Mediterranean diet guide](https://www.workingal.com/articles/mediterranean-diet-recipes-nutritionist-approved), it functions as a repeatable weekly anchor meal.

## The Practical Case for Mediterranean Eating
The Mediterranean diet is one of the most studied dietary patterns in clinical nutrition, with consistent associations with cardiovascular health, cognitive function, and longevity markers. For most working women, the barrier is not information or motivation. It is time.

This chicken tzatziki recipe sits at the intersection of nutritional quality and realistic preparation time. It takes less time to prepare than most food delivery wait times. It stores better than most meal prep options. And it delivers a macronutrient profile that actively supports the demands of a professional workday.

Add it to the rotation. Adjust the format to fit the day.
","chicken-tzatziki-recipe","chicken tzatziki recipe, high-protein Mediterranean meal, authentic tzatziki sauce, healthy meal prep for women, Greek chicken marinade, Mediterranean diet lunch ideas","The most high-protein chicken breast recipe with a taste of Greece.
