No fluff, no impossible 12-step routines—just strategies that work for real working women with real budgets and zero time for BS.

Why Winter Destroys Your Skin (The Science You Need to Know)

So, what's actually happening to your face when temperatures drop? Cold air holds less moisture than warm air—it's basic physics. When humidity levels drop below 30% (common in winter), your skin loses water 25% faster than normal.

Indoor heating makes everything worse. That cozy office heat? It's creating a moisture-sucking vortex that can drop humidity levels to Sahara Desert conditions (literally—we're talking 10-20% humidity). Your skin barrier, which normally acts like a protective seal, starts developing microscopic cracks. Think of it like a dam with tiny leaks—eventually, all your skin's natural moisture escapes.

The result? That tight, uncomfortable feeling when you smile. The foundation that looks perfect at 8 AM but resembles a dry riverbed by lunch. The redness, irritation, and those fun little dry patches that no amount of concealer can hide.

Tip #1: Switch to Lukewarm Water (Your Face Will Thank You)

This might be the hardest habit to break, but it's the most important. Hot water feels amazing after trudging through freezing temperatures, but it's destroying your skin barrier faster than you can say "moisture loss."

Dr. Hadley King, a board-certified dermatologist in New York, explains that water above 98°F strips away your skin's natural oils and damages the proteins that keep your barrier intact. Greece is one of the world's most renowned and popular tourist destinations, and even though Greek islands take pride in themselves, the capital of Greece has nothing to be jealous of. Athens is a name synonymous with **history**, with tales of ancient glories and echoes of a civilization that shaped the world. There are so many amazing things that this city has to offer, all enclosed in a lively (not [Blake](https://www.workingal.com/articles/when-did-blake-lively-s-public-image-take-a-turn), of course) and joyful vibe that combines ancient history with **modern energy**. And if you are still wondering why Athens is the place to be, we have seven reasons to make Athens your next stop.

Athens is full of history
-------------------------

![why you should visit athens](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/why_you_should_visit_athens_62685a42b7.jpg)

If history is your gig, then you probably know that Athens was a major center of ancient Greek civilization, known for its democracy, philosophy _(think Socrates, Plato, Aristotle!)_, art, and architecture. Athens is considered the birthplace of **democracy**, as it developed a system of government where citizens had a voice in political decisions. Walking through ancient sites like the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the Agora is like stepping back in time and wondering how ancient Greeks spent their days and making their decisions in the **Assembly**. Each corner of the city is connected to history, and you can literally find something of historical importance. The city is also packed with museums: the Acropolis Museum, the National Archaeological Museum, the Benaki Museum, and the list goes on.

Athens knows food
-----------------

Nobody can argue that Athens has a vibrant **food scene**. [Greek cuisine](https://www.workingal.com/articles/5-1-mouthwatering-greek-recipes-to-incorporate-in-your-meal-prep) emphasizes fresh, seasonal ingredients. Think vibrant salads with tomatoes and cucumbers, grilled meats and seafood seasoned simply with herbs like oregano and thyme, and creamy dips like tzatziki made with fresh yogurt and cucumbers. The [Mediterranean diet](https://www.workingal.com/articles/why-you-should-adopt-the-mediterranean-diet), heavily influenced by Greek cuisine, is renowned for its health benefits. It emphasizes whole grains, fruits, vegetables, olive oil, and lean protein, which can reduce the risk of heart disease and other chronic illnesses. Athens street food, the renowned _“souvlaki,”_ is one of the most delicious, wholesome, and comforting foods you will ever eat —at a very affordable price! Athenians know how to eat, and this is proven by the diversity of restaurants within the city, where you can eat from delicious “mezedes” (small dishes) to **Michelin-rated** Greek cuisine. And it’s not only the food per se. Greek food is deeply rooted in the country's history and culture. Sharing meals with family and friends is a central part of Greek life, and the convivial atmosphere often associated with Greek dining adds to its appeal.

Athens is truly hospitable
--------------------------

![why you should visit athens](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/why_you_should_visit_athens_0559e985d5.jpg)

Greek hospitality has been known since ancient times. Many Greek myths and legends highlight the importance of **hospitality**. For example, the story of Baucis and Philemon, who offered hospitality to Zeus and Hermes disguised as travelers, is a classic example of this value. The ancient Greek word _“filoxenia”_ translates to _"friend to the stranger"_ and embodies the core of Greek hospitality. It's a deep-rooted cultural value emphasizing welcoming and caring for visitors. Athenians are generally **friendly** and welcoming to tourists. You'll often encounter locals offering advice, directions, or even a friendly chat, and it’s possible that you will get invited to an event or [grab some drinks](https://www.workingal.com/articles/5-cocktails-for-your-new-year-s-eve-only) with locals. Sharing is caring for the Greeks, and they make sure that tourists feel like home! In Athens, you never hesitate to ask locals about anything, such as directions, restaurant suggestions, or even a bottle of water; they will make sure to get you what you need.

Athens is affordable
--------------------

One of the most remarkable things about Athens is that it’s a really **affordable** city compared to many other major European cities. Restaurants and bars have very reasonable prices without sacrificing quality, making it the ideal destination for those who want to explore a European [city on a budget](https://www.workingal.com/articles/europe-on-a-budget-5-affordable-european-destinations). Also, Athens has an excellent public transportation system (subway, buses, trams) that is affordable and can take you anywhere. Many of Athens' top attractions, such as the Acropolis and the National Archaeological Museum, are **free to enter** on certain days or for specific hours. Plenty of free walking tours, budget-friendly museums, and inexpensive day trips are available for those who want to take the most out of the city and enjoy its beauty.

Athens has the most stunning views
----------------------------------

![why you should visit athens](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/why_you_should_visit_athens_6f1a48352c.jpg)

Athens is not a flat city; it spreads on a series of hills, which adds to its unique character and offers stunning views. As long as you are ready to **walk**, standing atop the Acropolis will give you memorable panoramic views of the entire city, stretching from the Aegean Sea to the surrounding mountains. You can see iconic landmarks like the Parthenon, the Temple of Zeus, and the ancient Agora spread out below. One of the most famous hills of the city is Lycabettus Hill, which offers 360-degree views of Athens, and if you are lucky and the sky is clear, you can even see all the way to the **Saronic Gulf**. There's even a funicular railway that takes you to the top, making it easily accessible. Another spot for impeccable views is Filopappos Hill, which is located near the Acropolis and offers stunning views of the Parthenon and the surrounding neighborhoods. It's a popular spot for both **Athenians** and tourists to relax and enjoy the scenery.

Athens knows how to party
-------------------------

When you visit Athens, get ready for one of the best **nightlife experiences** in the world. Athens boasts numerous rooftop bars offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city, the Acropolis, and the Aegean Sea, where you can enjoy cocktails and mingle with locals while soaking in the city's nocturnal beauty. You can find a variety of live music venues around the city, from traditional Greek music to modern jazz and rock as well as larger venues hosting international acts. The city has a thriving **club scene** with something for everyone. Whatever your preferences are, this city can undoubtedly accommodate them.

Different neighborhoods offer distinct nightlife experiences; one day, you can visit Gazi for an intense nightlife experience since the area is known for its trendy clubs and bars, or the other day, you can enjoy your dinner along with some wine at a **live music venue**. Plaka, in the heart of downtown Athens, spread around the ancient Agora, can offer a more traditional Greek experience with tavernas featuring live music and dancing.

Athens has the best weather

![why you should visit athens](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/why_you_should_visit_athens_ee7fd6749e.jpg)

The first thing that Greeks miss when they migrate abroad is the weather. Greece is known for its Mediterranean climate, which is considered very pleasant and accommodating. Athens is located in the southern part of Greece; hence, it enjoys **mild winters** and sunny and warm summers. The long days during the summer allow for plenty of time to explore the city and its surroundings. Winters are mild and wet with occasional rain, while temperatures rarely drop below freezing, making it comfortable to explore the city even in winter. Spring and autumn are generally considered the most pleasant times, with mild temperatures and comfortable sightseeing conditions, making it the ideal place to visit all year round. Also, Athens has over **300 sunny days per year**, or around 3,000 hours of sunshine annually, which means that you can enjoy the sun all year round, fueling your vitamin D reserves, as long as you don’t forget your SPF.

Images: [1](https://images.app.goo.gl/gEQZwFLRvRkyEafd7), [2](https://images.app.goo.gl/aNrjVrprztTNWWkt8), [3](https://images.app.goo.gl/YjD91ehLiwNTm1MC8), ","7-reasons-why-you-should-visit-athens","athens, why athens is so popular, athens travel guide, reasons to visit athens, athens nightlife, athens hospitality, athens greece, visit athens","If you are planning your next vacation, then consider Athens, the Greek capital, to spend some days. According to psychologists, weekends are crucial for our [mental health](https://www.workingal.com/articles/does-our-diet-reflect-our-mental-state) because they provide a dedicated time for rest, relaxation, and disconnection from work-related stress, allowing us to recharge and improve our overall well-being. How? By engaging in activities that nurture social connections, hobbies, and personal interests, ultimately leading to better coping mechanisms and reduced burnout.

But let's be honest, sometimes the weekend can blur into a whirlwind of chores and errands. Instead of taking the time to indulge in some carefree, relaxing and mindless activities, we use the weekend to do what’s left from our busy calendar. Laundry, chores, the workout we missed. And when we finish everything it’s Sunday evening again.

When we consistently fail to decompress during weekends, the consequences can be significant and detrimental to our overall **well-being** and work performance. When we put ourselves in a constant pressure and not let some downtime in between our workdays, we have higher risk of **chronic stress**, anxiety, which could eventually lead to burnout. Also, not taking sometime and not spending some quality time for rest can make us feel moody, impatient and tense.

The good news is that even short periods of relaxation and mindfulness can have a significant impact and can help us better rest and prepare for the busy week ahead —as long as we focus on some “targeted” and **strategic relaxation**. This means, that we don’t have to leave everything behind, as long as we engage in some more productive activities than binge watching TV shows. And if you can’t think of anything, here are 6 fun and easy ways to try this weekend and get ready for the week.

Brain Dump & Plan
------------------

Instagram dump is cool, but brain dump is even cooler, this is why you should start your weekend with a clean slate! Jot down all those swirling thoughts and to-dos. Once they're out of your head, categorize them (work, personal, errands) and create a simple, achievable [to-do list](https://www.workingal.com/articles/your-monthly-to-do-list-with-our-favorite-quotes) for the week. Prioritize which of those errands you can combine during your commuting to work, e.g. picking up the dry cleaning or going to the grocery store before you come back home. Also, you don’t have to dedicate a whole day —yes, your Saturday—for doing the chores. You can focus on one thing every day, _e.g. laundry on Monday, bathroom cleaning on Tuesday, etc._ This way, you won’t spend all your weekend cleaning and dreaming of your ideal Saturday evening. Dump on this list your frustrations with people and **challenges** at work and promise yourself that you will deal with them first thing on Monday morning.

Tech Detox
-----------

When we are in and out of meeting and have to deliver the project, the last thing we have time to do is to check our social and scroll down for the latest articles on the Working Gal. However, if your feel tempted to spend your weekend to catch up with everything that is happening in [Hollywood](https://www.workingal.com/articles/when-did-blake-lively-s-public-image-take-a-turn) or the latest news of your favorite [influencers](https://www.workingal.com/articles/enough-with-those-influencers), then you may want to reconsider doing it during the weekend. You need to give your eyes and mind a break!Unplug from social media, put down the phone, and enjoy the present moment. Read a book, listen to music, or simply gaze out the window. Our brain gets so much **online information** every day and feeding it with more during the weekend will have the opposite effect and you probably going to feel more overwhelmed on Monday morning.

Declutter & Organize
---------------------

![selfcare habits for the weekends](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/selfcare_habits_for_the_weekends_4551df7b5e.jpg)

A tidy space equals a tidy mind! The holiday season is over, but the work we left behind while having fun and RSVPing to events is coming to haunt us in January. And while things are busier, we still need to be able to eat somehow normally, even though our time is precious.

One of the most annoying things about cooking (or probably the only one if you are an aspiring chef) is cleaning the kitchen after creating a beautiful recipe. All these pots, utensils and dishes that must be washed by hand can be a buzz killer, especially when the fatigue hits you. And as every problem has a solution, we found the solution to that as well: one-pote dishes.

The amount of time you save by using only one pan is impressive. And the amount of washing is cut down to —almost— zero. You put everything in one pan and let them cook—pure perfection. And if you are too busy and tired to care to look for one-pot recipes, we’ve got you covered below. Our favorite one-pot dinners are your weekday allies when the only thing you want is just to relax and binge-watch whatever. Enjoy!

## [1\\. Greek Spinach Rice](https://www.olivetomato.com/greek-spinach-and-rice-spanakorizo/)

![10 One-Pot Dinners You Need For Your Busy Weekdays](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/10_One_Pot_Dinners_You_Need_For_Your_Busy_Weekdays_ac9893974a.jpg)

Not everything will be Greek for you with this easy, wholesome, and highly easy-to-make recipe. Spinach rice is a very common dish in Greek and Mediterranean cuisine, and it’s easy to make on your non-meat days. However, spinach is rich in iron; if you add enough lemon, you will get enough out of it. It's one of the must-go recipes for a busy evening when you don’t have time to spare but still don’t want to end up with a takeaway option.

## [2\\. Creamy Cajun Chicken with Pasta](https://www.budgetbytes.com/one-pot-creamy-cajun-chicken-pasta/)

![10 One-Pot Dinners You Need For Your Busy Weekdays](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/10_One_Pot_Dinners_You_Need_For_Your_Busy_Weekdays_be11bf0e9e.jpg)

Chicken and pasta are two of the most successful combinations, and they can be used in a variety of dishes. However, this dish wins: it’s creamy, yummy, and easier than it sounds to make. Seasoned chicken with pasta and a creamy sauce that will make you want to do it again and again.

## [3\\. One Pot Cheesy Mushroom Spinach Beef Pasta](https://www.ambitiouskitchen.com/spinach-beef-pasta/)

![10 One-Pot Dinners You Need For Your Busy Weekdays](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/10_One_Pot_Dinners_You_Need_For_Your_Busy_Weekdays_9b6b763195.jpg)

Mushrooms are a powerhouse in your kitchen since they can elevate every recipe, making it Michelin Star restaurant good (for us, at least!). You can use mushrooms in your pasta, salads or just combine them with rice and make the perfect Italian risotto. However, if you don’t have time, you can just make a creamy one-pot dish that will definitely be your favorite and most comforting weekday dinner ever.

## [4\\. It is an easy and quick way to feel healthy without much effort but equally satisfying. A perfect winter comfort food for your busy nights since it takes only 15 minutes to make.

## [5\\. It’s so nutritious and interesting that we have it on our recipe list and repeat it several times. Parmesan is a must.

## [6.One-pan creamy Tuscan salmon](https://www.taste.com.au/recipes/one-pan-creamy-tuscan-salmon-recipe/a8nzko4x?r=recipes/xvg3xhix)

![10 One-Pot Dinners You Need For Your Busy Weekdays](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/10_One_Pot_Dinners_You_Need_For_Your_Busy_Weekdays_0eb19af29a.jpg)

Salmon is one of the most versatile fish since it can be combined with pretty much anything. You can use it with pasta, rice, potatoes, or as a protein source for your salad. However, sometimes you want something more. And this recipe gives it to you.

## [7\\. Sweet and sour chicken with couscous and mango sauce](https://akispetretzikis.com/en/recipe/7705/glukoxino-kotopoulo-me-kouskous-kai-saltsa-mango)

![10 One-Pot Dinners You Need For Your Busy Weekdays](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/10_One_Pot_Dinners_You_Need_For_Your_Busy_Weekdays_ea3bfabc15.jpg)

Sweet and sour chicken definitely tastes good for unique palates, but it’s so satisfying and wholesome when combined with an unexpected ingredient: couscous. Mange sauce gives a touch of luxury and it’s so easy to make that we make it on repeat.

## 8\\. [One pot chicken risoni with crispy salami](https://www.recipetineats.com/one-pot-chicken-risoni-with-crispy-salami/)

![10 One-Pot Dinners You Need For Your Busy Weekdays](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/10_One_Pot_Dinners_You_Need_For_Your_Busy_Weekdays_82412c6139.jpg)

Orzo (or risoni) is a not-so-popular ingredient —we don’t know why— but it’s the ideal ingredient to make easy one-pot dishes with the minimum effort. Combined with chicken and crispy salami, you will have one of the most satisfying dishes. Perfect for cozy dinners with friends as well.

## [9\\. Greek-style squid and rice](https://akispetretzikis.com/en/recipe/8134/ryzi-me-kalamarakia)

![10 One-Pot Dinners You Need For Your Busy Weekdays](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/10_One_Pot_Dinners_You_Need_For_Your_Busy_Weekdays_aded767bb7.jpg)

Squid is a popular cephalopod (yes, it’s not fish) broadly used in Greek cuisine. It has such a unique taste and is packed with nutrients, so it’s a nice replacement for fish days. Also, it’s easy to make with rice and can be considered a very comforting food.

## [10\\. We only recommend what's already earned a permanent spot in our routine._

I’ve spent more hours than I care to admit opening online courses, getting through the first module, and never returning, therefore, I know exactly what that first tab feels like — ambitious, a little self-congratulatory — and I also know what happens two weeks later when life fills back in.

That said, the case for online learning is real, and I think it’s actually strongest for people who don’t have the time or money to commit to something full-scale. A part-time MBA costs tens of thousands of dollars and two years of your life (been there, done that). A postgraduate certificate requires you to organize your entire schedule around it. Most of us are working full-time, managing a life, and trying to grow professionally at the same time. However, online courses are not a consolation prize for people who can’t do “the real thing.” They are a rational choice for people who want targeted skills without disrupting everything else that’s working.

The courses on this list are specifically focused on soft skills, meaning the kind of skills that don’t show up automatically [on a resume](https://www.workingal.com/articles/resume-red-flags) but make a measurable difference in how you perform, negotiate, and are perceived professionally. Negotiation, [decision-making](https://www.workingal.com/articles/decision-fatigue), and time management. Well-being as a performance variable. These are the ones that determine whether your technical skills actually translate into [career progress](https://www.workingal.com/articles/expensive-mistakes-building-business-founder-lessons), or whether you stay competent and overlooked. And they’re the ones that are hardest to develop on the job because no one explicitly teaches them.

The courses I’m recommending here are also genuinely useful for building out a resume or LinkedIn profile, particularly if you’re in an early-to-mid stage of your career and looking to demonstrate competencies that your job title doesn’t yet reflect. Completing a University of Michigan or Yale course through Coursera gives you a credible credential you can cite. And while it’s not a degree, it’s not nothing, either.

The courses on this list are the ones I actually completed — or, in two cases, recommended to people I work with and heard back from. They are not the most popular courses on Coursera. They are not necessarily the ones with the most reviews. They are the ones where something shifted: a decision I stopped second-guessing, a negotiation I handled differently, a skill set I could actually point to when someone asked.

One practical note: Coursera offers a free audit option on most courses, which means you can access lectures and materials without paying. You won’t get the certificate unless you enroll, but the knowledge is there. I’ll tell you for each course whether the certificate is worth getting or whether auditing is enough.
## 1. Decision Making - How to Choose the Right Problem to Solve
#### Best for: Anyone who regularly has more work than time. | Time commitment: 10 hours | [Εnroll Free here](https://imp.i384100.net/9VMa24)

The title sounds like a soft-skills seminar but it isn't. This course is fundamentally about cognitive efficiency — identifying which problems are actually worth your attention, and how to structure your thinking so you're not in a constant state of reactive decision-making.
The most useful module is the one on problem framing. There's a specific exercise where you describe a workplace problem you're currently dealing with and walk it through a diagnostic filter. I watched someone reframe a situation she'd been stressing about for three months and arrive at a completely different — and far more actionable — conclusion in about 20 minutes.
The certificate is worth getting if you're in a role that involves managing projects or people. It signals analytical thinking in a way that's easy to articulate on a CV.

## 2. Create a Professional Online Presence
#### Best for: If you've been told to 'build your personal brand' and have no idea where to start. | Time commitment: 7 hours | [Enroll free here](https://imp.i384100.net/5kMPqb)

This course is more practical than the title suggests. It walks you through how different platforms function differently for professional visibility, not in a [social media manager sense](https://www.workingal.com/articles/career-advice-from-influencers), but in a search-and-discovery sense. How does someone find you when they Google your name? What does your LinkedIn actually communicate to someone who doesn't know you?

The communication section is where it earns its place on this list. It's not about posting more. It's about being legible to people who matter to your career. If you're early-stage and have been vague about what you do and for whom, this course will push you to make some decisions you've been avoiding.

Audit this one. The certificate is less relevant than the framework you'll leave with.

## 3. Successful Negotiation: Essential Strategies and Skills
#### Best for: Anyone preparing for a salary conversation or a client negotiation. | Time commitment: 17 hours | [Enroll free here](https://imp.i384100.net/L0x350)

![coursera free courses](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/coursera_free_courses_ae62a47151.jpg)

University of Michigan. This is the one I recommend most. The reason most people lose negotiations isn't that they [don't ask for enough](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-to-negotiate-salary-career-woman) — it's that they haven't prepared a proper analysis. They walk in with a number and a feeling. This course walks you through building an actual negotiation structure: your BATNA, theirs, the zone of possible agreement, and how to read the dynamic in the room.

The salary application is obvious, but I've found it more useful in client and supplier negotiations. The module on psychological tactics — how they're used against you, and how to respond — is something you will use within a week of finishing it.

Get the certificate. This is one of the rare cases where having the University of Michigan credential on a profile or resume is a real signal.

## 4. Work Smarter, Not Harder: Time Management for Personal & Professional Productivity

#### Best for: If your to-do list is always full and you're always behind. | Time commitment: 8 hours | [Enroll free here](https://imp.i384100.net/enrGAz)

UC Irvine. The title is generic, but the content is not. What this course does well is address the difference between being busy and being effective — specifically, the cognitive load that comes from how you store and process open tasks. The module on decision fatigue and its effect on output quality is one I've referenced in [conversations about burnout](https://www.workingal.com/articles/quiet-burnout-symptoms) many times since.

If you're someone who functions on adrenaline and constant reprioritization, this course will either make you uncomfortable or finally [give language to something](https://www.workingal.com/articles/body-language-hacks-for-authority) you've known wasn't working. Either way, it's worth eight hours.

Audit is fine here. The value is in the frameworks, not the credentials.

![coursera free courses](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/coursera_free_courses_560407cb9d.jpg)

## 5. The Science of Well-Being
#### Best for: Particularly useful if you've optimized everything except how you feel. | Time commitment: 19 hours | [Enroll free here](https://imp.i384100.net/rEzo0D)

Yale. This is the most-enrolled course in Coursera history, which usually makes me skeptical. I'm including it because the premise is a good one: your intuitions about what will make you happy are systematically wrong, and the evidence for this is solid. Professor Laurie Santos is a cognitive scientist, not a wellness influencer, and the distinction matters.
The sections on hedonic adaptation and the connection between social investment and performance are the most professionally relevant. You won't finish this course and immediately feel better. You will finish it with a more accurate mental model of how you function, which is more useful long-term.
Audit it unless you want the certificate for personal reasons. The credential doesn't carry professional weight, but the content does.

## A Note on How to Actually Finish What You Start

The reason most people don't complete online courses has nothing to do with motivation. It's structural. You enroll when you're energized, you don't protect time for it in your actual schedule, and then life moves faster than your good intentions.

One session per week, blocked in your calendar like a meeting, is the only system that has consistently worked for the people I've seen finish things. Pick one course. Audit first if you're not sure. Commit to the certificate only when you know you'll see it through.

These five are the ones I'd start with.

### _TWG Report 2026 — We're surveying professional women on AI, job security, and what's actually changing at work. We promote women's rights, sometimes rooting for women who are not part of Western privilege and constantly praise our achievements and the progress we have made as a society to provide women with a safe place to live with dignity and fulfillment. Movements like _#metoo_ have added to this pride, and we tend to believe that safety doesn’t concern us —it’s a problem left for the Eastern World. Yet, a sobering truth persists: women, even in these seemingly enlightened societies, face significant **safety concerns**. While strides have been made, the pervasive issue of violence against women remains a stark reality, and our safety is not a given _—it’s leaning toward an illusion._

The Statistics Never Lie
------------------------

The optimists and the ones who don’t care to pay any attention because the matter is irrelevant to them would argue that it’s almost comic to talk about safety in the **Western World** where women have all those rights, and we should see what happens on the other side, aka the East. However, the statistics don’t follow this narrative and are more than encouraging.

**Sexual Assault:** A surprising number of women experience sexual assault in their lifetimes. While reporting rates vary, it's clear that many incidents go unreported due to fear, shame, or a lack of faith in the justice system and law enforcement. Victims may worry about being blamed, disbelieved, or re-traumatized by the legal process, and they just live with it. These barriers to reporting often leave perpetrators unaccountable and perpetuate a cycle of violence.

* 1 in 5 women in the U.S. has been the victim of rape.

* Most sexual assaults are committed by someone the victim knows.

* About 1 in 6 women in the U.S. has been stalked at some point in her life.

* The same EU study found that 11% of women in the EU had experienced sexual violence in the past 12 months.

**Domestic Violence:** Domestic violence, a pervasive issue that disproportionately affects women, encompasses a range of abusive behaviors, including physical, emotional, and psychological violence. This insidious cycle of abuse can leave victims feeling trapped, isolated, and powerless. Physical abuse may involve hitting, slapping, kicking, or other forms of physical harm. Emotional abuse, on the other hand, involves tactics such as gaslighting, manipulation, and constant criticism aimed at undermining the victim's self-esteem and sense of reality. Psychological abuse may include intimidation, threats, and controlling behaviors, designed to instill fear and dependence. The cycle of abuse often escalates over time, with periods of tension, violence, and a brief period of calm or honeymoon phase, followed by a return to tension and violence. This pattern can make it difficult for victims to recognize the abusive nature of the relationship and seek help, and they may spend all their lives having to live in such relationships —if they are lucky to live.

* 1 in 4 women experience severe physical violence, sexual violence, or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

* On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the U.S.

* A study by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights found that 22% of women in Western Europe experienced intimate partner violence in 2020.

**Workplace Harassment:** Workplace harassment, particularly sexual harassment and discrimination, continues to be a significant challenge for women in many professional settings. These experiences can range from subtle microaggressions, such as [sexist jokes or comments](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-to-handle-sexist-people-in-business), to overt acts of harassment, including sexual assault and coercion.

The impact of workplace harassment affects women's mental health, job satisfaction, and career advancement. Victims may experience anxiety, depression, and **post-traumatic stress disorder**. Moreover, harassment can create a hostile work environment, undermining productivity and morale and kicking women out of the job market, jeopardizing their careers and financial independence.

**Street Harassment:** Street harassment, a pervasive form of **gender-based violence**, involves unwanted and intrusive behaviors directed at individuals in public spaces. For women, this can range from verbal harassment, such as catcalling and lewd comments, to physical harassment, including unwanted touching and groping.

The impact of street harassment is significant, often leading to feelings of fear, anxiety, and diminished self-esteem. It can restrict women's freedom of movement, forcing them to alter their **daily routines**, avoid specific public spaces, and restrain themselves from walking alone in case someone attacks them. Street harassment creates a climate of intimidation, making women feel unsafe and vulnerable in their communities.

The Root of the Problem
-----------------------

![women safety in the western world](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/women_safety_in_the_western_world_4b0bed6a3a.jpg)

The persistence of violence against women is a deeply rooted issue, influenced by a complex interplay of societal factors. **Gender** inequality, a pervasive force in many cultures, creates power imbalances that can lead to abuse and exploitation. **Patriarchal** norms, which often prioritize male dominance and control, can perpetuate harmful stereotypes and reinforce gender-based discrimination. **Societal** attitudes, shaped by cultural and historical factors, can either condone or challenge violence against women. Misogynistic beliefs, which often view women as inferior or objects of desire, can contribute to a climate of _tolerance for abuse_. Additionally, the [normalization of violence in media](https://www.workingal.com/articles/do-people-love-to-hate-women-online) and popular culture can desensitize individuals to its harmful effects and perpetuate harmful stereotypes. Women are scrutinized heavier than men, and no matter how hard they try to conform to the stereotypes, they will always be victims and vulnerable targets.

Breaking the Silence
--------------------

To effectively address the pervasive issue of violence against women, it is imperative to break the silence surrounding this problem. Encouraging open and honest conversations about violence, abuse, and harassment can help to reduce stigma and empower survivors to seek help. By promoting empathy and understanding, we can foster a culture of compassion and support for those who have experienced trauma.

Furthermore, it is essential to challenge harmful **gender stereotypes** that perpetuate gender inequality and contribute to violence. By promoting gender equality and challenging patriarchal norms, we can create a society where all individuals are valued and respected.

Strengthening legal frameworks, improving law enforcement response, and providing comprehensive support services for survivors are crucial steps. Investing in victim support services, such as hotlines, shelters, and counseling, can help survivors heal and rebuild their lives. Additionally, it is essential to hold perpetrators **accountable** by ensuring that laws are effectively enforced and that justice is served.

#### To write this, we consulted:

[https://www.marketwatch.com/story/why-the-us-is-one-of-the-most-dangerous-countries-for-women-2018-06-29](https://www.marketwatch.com/story/why-the-us-is-one-of-the-most-dangerous-countries-for-women-2018-06-29)

(https://iwpr.org/harassment-in-the-workplace-why-the-us-and-the-eu-must-act/#:~:text=In the European Union, 18,(68 percent) then men)(https://iwpr.org/harassment-in-the-workplace-why-the-us-and-the-eu-must-act/#:~:text=In the European Union, 18,(68 percent) then men) .","the-illusion-of-safety-are-women-safe-in-the-western-world","women safety, western world safety, are women safe in the west world, domestic abuse in the us, women safety in the us, how safe are women in europe","We usually talk about women's rights in the Eastern world, but how about the Western world?
