Then the blood arrives. She has never been told what a period is, so she believes she is dying, and she stumbles toward the other girls with her hands out, asking for help. They give her an answer. They pelt her with tampons and pads, they chant, and the whole tiled room rings with the sound of a pack discovering that cruelty is more fun in a crowd. The telekinesis, the fire, and the pig’s blood come later. The first act of violence in the book is a group of girls laughing at a body.

Every few years, the story is hauled back out, most recently in Mike Flanagan’s Prime Video series, and every time we file it under horror because horror is the easier shelf. It lets us say that Carrie White is a freak and that nothing like her has ever sat in our own homerooms, offices or group chats. She keeps a crucifix on the wall and a closet for punishment, and she has taught her daughter to read the female body as an occupation of sin. Watch her for a while, and she stops looking like a person and starts looking like a policy. Everything she says is a message our culture already sends to girls, with the polite packaging taken off.

The culture whispers that you should keep your body quiet, and Margaret screams it. The culture hints that desire is a liability and that a woman’s visibility invites trouble, and Margaret quotes scripture to make the same point. Where the rest of the world applies pressure with a raised eyebrow, a dress code, and a look across the dinner table, she uses a lock. Most of us were raised by a gentler Margaret, someone loving and well-meaning who handed down a softer version of the same instructions: keep it down, keep it covered, keep it pleasant. The better reading turns the camera around and points it at everyone else in the room.

It gives the thing a monster, a costume, and a distance.
