The holiday season is over, but the work we left behind while having fun and RSVPing to events is coming to haunt us in January. All these pots, utensils and dishes that must be washed by hand can be a buzz killer, especially when the fatigue hits you. And as every problem has a solution, we found the solution to that as well: one-pote dishes.

The amount of time you save by using only one pan is impressive. We only recommend what's already earned a permanent spot in our routine._

I’ve spent more hours than I care to admit opening online courses, getting through the first module, and never returning, therefore, I know exactly what that first tab feels like — ambitious, a little self-congratulatory — and I also know what happens two weeks later when life fills back in.

That said, the case for online learning is real, and I think it’s actually strongest for people who don’t have the time or money to commit to something full-scale. A part-time MBA costs tens of thousands of dollars and two years of your life (been there, done that). A postgraduate certificate requires you to organize your entire schedule around it. Most of us are working full-time, managing a life, and trying to grow professionally at the same time. However, online courses are not a consolation prize for people who can’t do “the real thing.” They are a rational choice for people who want targeted skills without disrupting everything else that’s working.

The courses on this list are specifically focused on soft skills, meaning the kind of skills that don’t show up automatically [on a resume](https://www.workingal.com/articles/resume-red-flags) but make a measurable difference in how you perform, negotiate, and are perceived professionally. Negotiation, [decision-making](https://www.workingal.com/articles/decision-fatigue), and time management. Well-being as a performance variable. These are the ones that determine whether your technical skills actually translate into [career progress](https://www.workingal.com/articles/expensive-mistakes-building-business-founder-lessons), or whether you stay competent and overlooked. And they’re the ones that are hardest to develop on the job because no one explicitly teaches them.

The courses I’m recommending here are also genuinely useful for building out a resume or LinkedIn profile, particularly if you’re in an early-to-mid stage of your career and looking to demonstrate competencies that your job title doesn’t yet reflect. Completing a University of Michigan or Yale course through Coursera gives you a credible credential you can cite. And while it’s not a degree, it’s not nothing, either.

The courses on this list are the ones I actually completed — or, in two cases, recommended to people I work with and heard back from. They are not the most popular courses on Coursera. They are not necessarily the ones with the most reviews. They are the ones where something shifted: a decision I stopped second-guessing, a negotiation I handled differently, a skill set I could actually point to when someone asked.

One practical note: Coursera offers a free audit option on most courses, which means you can access lectures and materials without paying. You won’t get the certificate unless you enroll, but the knowledge is there. I’ll tell you for each course whether the certificate is worth getting or whether auditing is enough.
## 1. Decision Making - How to Choose the Right Problem to Solve
#### Best for: Anyone who regularly has more work than time. | Time commitment: 10 hours | [Εnroll Free here](https://imp.i384100.net/9VMa24)

The title sounds like a soft-skills seminar but it isn't. This course is fundamentally about cognitive efficiency — identifying which problems are actually worth your attention, and how to structure your thinking so you're not in a constant state of reactive decision-making.
The most useful module is the one on problem framing. There's a specific exercise where you describe a workplace problem you're currently dealing with and walk it through a diagnostic filter. I watched someone reframe a situation she'd been stressing about for three months and arrive at a completely different — and far more actionable — conclusion in about 20 minutes.
The certificate is worth getting if you're in a role that involves managing projects or people. It signals analytical thinking in a way that's easy to articulate on a CV.

## 2. Create a Professional Online Presence
#### Best for: If you've been told to 'build your personal brand' and have no idea where to start. | Time commitment: 7 hours | [Enroll free here](https://imp.i384100.net/5kMPqb)

This course is more practical than the title suggests. It walks you through how different platforms function differently for professional visibility, not in a [social media manager sense](https://www.workingal.com/articles/career-advice-from-influencers), but in a search-and-discovery sense. How does someone find you when they Google your name? What does your LinkedIn actually communicate to someone who doesn't know you?

The communication section is where it earns its place on this list. It's not about posting more. It's about being legible to people who matter to your career. If you're early-stage and have been vague about what you do and for whom, this course will push you to make some decisions you've been avoiding.

Audit this one. The certificate is less relevant than the framework you'll leave with.

## 3. Successful Negotiation: Essential Strategies and Skills
#### Best for: Anyone preparing for a salary conversation or a client negotiation. | Time commitment: 17 hours | [Enroll free here](https://imp.i384100.net/L0x350)

![coursera free courses](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/coursera_free_courses_ae62a47151.jpg)

University of Michigan. This is the one I recommend most. The reason most people lose negotiations isn't that they [don't ask for enough](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-to-negotiate-salary-career-woman) — it's that they haven't prepared a proper analysis. They walk in with a number and a feeling. This course walks you through building an actual negotiation structure: your BATNA, theirs, the zone of possible agreement, and how to read the dynamic in the room.

The salary application is obvious, but I've found it more useful in client and supplier negotiations. The module on psychological tactics — how they're used against you, and how to respond — is something you will use within a week of finishing it.

Get the certificate. This is one of the rare cases where having the University of Michigan credential on a profile or resume is a real signal.

## 4. Work Smarter, Not Harder: Time Management for Personal & Professional Productivity

#### Best for: If your to-do list is always full and you're always behind. | Time commitment: 8 hours | [Enroll free here](https://imp.i384100.net/enrGAz)

UC Irvine. The title is generic, but the content is not. What this course does well is address the difference between being busy and being effective — specifically, the cognitive load that comes from how you store and process open tasks. The module on decision fatigue and its effect on output quality is one I've referenced in [conversations about burnout](https://www.workingal.com/articles/quiet-burnout-symptoms) many times since.

If you're someone who functions on adrenaline and constant reprioritization, this course will either make you uncomfortable or finally [give language to something](https://www.workingal.com/articles/body-language-hacks-for-authority) you've known wasn't working. Either way, it's worth eight hours.

Audit is fine here. The Science of Well-Being
#### Best for: Particularly useful if you've optimized everything except how you feel. | Time commitment: 19 hours | [Enroll free here](https://imp.i384100.net/rEzo0D)

Yale. This is the most-enrolled course in Coursera history, which usually makes me skeptical. I'm including it because the premise is a good one: your intuitions about what will make you happy are systematically wrong, and the evidence for this is solid. Professor Laurie Santos is a cognitive scientist, not a wellness influencer, and the distinction matters.
The sections on hedonic adaptation and the connection between social investment and performance are the most professionally relevant. You won't finish this course and immediately feel better. You will finish it with a more accurate mental model of how you function, which is more useful long-term.
Audit it unless you want the certificate for personal reasons. The credential doesn't carry professional weight, but the content does.

## A Note on How to Actually Finish What You Start

The reason most people don't complete online courses has nothing to do with motivation. It's structural. You enroll when you're energized, you don't protect time for it in your actual schedule, and then life moves faster than your good intentions.

One session per week, blocked in your calendar like a meeting, is the only system that has consistently worked for the people I've seen finish things. Pick one course. Audit first if you're not sure. Commit to the certificate only when you know you'll see it through.

These five are the ones I'd start with.

### _TWG Report 2026 — We're surveying professional women on AI, job security, and what's actually changing at work. We promote women's rights, sometimes rooting for women who are not part of Western privilege and constantly praise our achievements and the progress we have made as a society to provide women with a safe place to live with dignity and fulfillment. Movements like _#metoo_ have added to this pride, and we tend to believe that safety doesn’t concern us —it’s a problem left for the Eastern World. Yet, a sobering truth persists: women, even in these seemingly enlightened societies, face significant **safety concerns**. While strides have been made, the pervasive issue of violence against women remains a stark reality, and our safety is not a given _—it’s leaning toward an illusion._

The Statistics Never Lie
------------------------

The optimists and the ones who don’t care to pay any attention because the matter is irrelevant to them would argue that it’s almost comic to talk about safety in the **Western World** where women have all those rights, and we should see what happens on the other side, aka the East. However, the statistics don’t follow this narrative and are more than encouraging.

**Sexual Assault:** A surprising number of women experience sexual assault in their lifetimes. While reporting rates vary, it's clear that many incidents go unreported due to fear, shame, or a lack of faith in the justice system and law enforcement. Victims may worry about being blamed, disbelieved, or re-traumatized by the legal process, and they just live with it. These barriers to reporting often leave perpetrators unaccountable and perpetuate a cycle of violence.

* 1 in 5 women in the U.S. has been the victim of rape.

* Most sexual assaults are committed by someone the victim knows.

* About 1 in 6 women in the U.S. has been stalked at some point in her life.

* The same EU study found that 11% of women in the EU had experienced sexual violence in the past 12 months.

**Domestic Violence:** Domestic violence, a pervasive issue that disproportionately affects women, encompasses a range of abusive behaviors, including physical, emotional, and psychological violence. This insidious cycle of abuse can leave victims feeling trapped, isolated, and powerless. Physical abuse may involve hitting, slapping, kicking, or other forms of physical harm. Emotional abuse, on the other hand, involves tactics such as gaslighting, manipulation, and constant criticism aimed at undermining the victim's self-esteem and sense of reality. Psychological abuse may include intimidation, threats, and controlling behaviors, designed to instill fear and dependence. The cycle of abuse often escalates over time, with periods of tension, violence, and a brief period of calm or honeymoon phase, followed by a return to tension and violence. This pattern can make it difficult for victims to recognize the abusive nature of the relationship and seek help, and they may spend all their lives having to live in such relationships —if they are lucky to live.

* 1 in 4 women experience severe physical violence, sexual violence, or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

* On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the U.S.

* A study by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights found that 22% of women in Western Europe experienced intimate partner violence in 2020.

**Workplace Harassment:** Workplace harassment, particularly sexual harassment and discrimination, continues to be a significant challenge for women in many professional settings. These experiences can range from subtle microaggressions, such as [sexist jokes or comments](https://www.workingal.com/articles/how-to-handle-sexist-people-in-business), to overt acts of harassment, including sexual assault and coercion.

The impact of workplace harassment affects women's mental health, job satisfaction, and career advancement. Victims may experience anxiety, depression, and **post-traumatic stress disorder**. Moreover, harassment can create a hostile work environment, undermining productivity and morale and kicking women out of the job market, jeopardizing their careers and financial independence.

**Street Harassment:** Street harassment, a pervasive form of **gender-based violence**, involves unwanted and intrusive behaviors directed at individuals in public spaces. For women, this can range from verbal harassment, such as catcalling and lewd comments, to physical harassment, including unwanted touching and groping.

The impact of street harassment is significant, often leading to feelings of fear, anxiety, and diminished self-esteem. It can restrict women's freedom of movement, forcing them to alter their **daily routines**, avoid specific public spaces, and restrain themselves from walking alone in case someone attacks them. Street harassment creates a climate of intimidation, making women feel unsafe and vulnerable in their communities.

The Root of the Problem
-----------------------

![women safety in the western world](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/women_safety_in_the_western_world_4b0bed6a3a.jpg)

The persistence of violence against women is a deeply rooted issue, influenced by a complex interplay of societal factors. **Gender** inequality, a pervasive force in many cultures, creates power imbalances that can lead to abuse and exploitation. **Patriarchal** norms, which often prioritize male dominance and control, can perpetuate harmful stereotypes and reinforce gender-based discrimination. **Societal** attitudes, shaped by cultural and historical factors, can either condone or challenge violence against women. Misogynistic beliefs, which often view women as inferior or objects of desire, can contribute to a climate of _tolerance for abuse_. Additionally, the [normalization of violence in media](https://www.workingal.com/articles/do-people-love-to-hate-women-online) and popular culture can desensitize individuals to its harmful effects and perpetuate harmful stereotypes. Women are scrutinized heavier than men, and no matter how hard they try to conform to the stereotypes, they will always be victims and vulnerable targets.

Breaking the Silence
--------------------

To effectively address the pervasive issue of violence against women, it is imperative to break the silence surrounding this problem. Encouraging open and honest conversations about violence, abuse, and harassment can help to reduce stigma and empower survivors to seek help. By promoting empathy and understanding, we can foster a culture of compassion and support for those who have experienced trauma.

Furthermore, it is essential to challenge harmful **gender stereotypes** that perpetuate gender inequality and contribute to violence. By promoting gender equality and challenging patriarchal norms, we can create a society where all individuals are valued and respected.

Strengthening legal frameworks, improving law enforcement response, and providing comprehensive support services for survivors are crucial steps. Investing in victim support services, such as hotlines, shelters, and counseling, can help survivors heal and rebuild their lives. Additionally, it is essential to hold perpetrators **accountable** by ensuring that laws are effectively enforced and that justice is served.

#### To write this, we consulted:

[https://www.marketwatch.com/story/why-the-us-is-one-of-the-most-dangerous-countries-for-women-2018-06-29](https://www.marketwatch.com/story/why-the-us-is-one-of-the-most-dangerous-countries-for-women-2018-06-29)

(https://iwpr.org/harassment-in-the-workplace-why-the-us-and-the-eu-must-act/#:~:text=In the European Union, 18,(68 percent) then men)(https://iwpr.org/harassment-in-the-workplace-why-the-us-and-the-eu-must-act/#:~:text=In the European Union, 18,(68 percent) then men) .","the-illusion-of-safety-are-women-safe-in-the-western-world","women safety, western world safety, are women safe in the west world, domestic abuse in the us, women safety in the us, how safe are women in europe","We usually talk about women's rights in the Eastern world, but how about the Western world? We reflect on the past year and visualize the new one that is coming. However, how many of us pay attention to our finances? How many goals do we set regarding our **financial literacy** and goals? Self-care, work-life balance, and traveling goals are so important, but we tend to neglect the most important factor that defines, to a great extent, the above: our finances.

The beginning of the year is the ideal season to reevaluate our financial situation, review our finances, and set new financial goals. Now it’s the time to decide your priorities, where you want to spend money, and how your savings account is moving forward.

Setting clear and achievable financial goals is a fundamental step on the path to **financial fitness**. SMART goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. The SMART goal-setting framework is effective because it provides a structured and focused approach to achieving your objectives. By defining your goals precisely, you eliminate ambiguity and understand exactly what you aim for. This prevents wasted effort and keeps you on track. Also, with every goal we set, we need motivation to achieve; so having quantifiable metrics allows you to track progress, identify areas for improvement, and celebrate milestones, provides **motivation** and a sense of accomplishment.

Creating SMART goals needs patience, reflection, and time. Especially when it comes to our finances, it’s crucial to set goals that can lead to financial success and help us organize our finances effectively. Our financial gals explained to us how to set our SMART goals successfully. The SMART framework is as follows, and you can always use it for your goals in general.

## **1\\. Specific (S):**

Your financial goals should be well-defined and specific so you must be clear about what you want to accomplish. In order to define your financial goals, ask yourself questions like:

* What exactly do I want to achieve with my finances?

* Why is this goal important to me?

* What is the purpose or objective behind this goal?

For instance, instead of a vague goal like _"I need to save money this year,"_ a specific goal could be _"I want to save $5,000 for a down payment on a home in the next two years."_

## **2\\. Measurable (M):**

Your financial goals should be quantifiable so that you are able to track your progress and determine when you've achieved the goal. The questions below will help you measure your goals.

* How will I measure my progress?

* How much do I need to save or invest?

* What are the specific numbers associated with this goal?

Instead of a vague statement like _"This year, I will reduce debt,"_ a measurable goal could be _"I will pay off $10,000 in credit card debt within 12 months."_

## **3\\. Achievable (A):**

![How To Set SMART Financial Goals](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/How_To_Set_SMART_Financial_Goals_db44b48fbf.jpg)

Sometimes, the goals we set are unrealistic and, hence, not attainable. While it never hurts to dream big, your goals should remain within reach. For instance, the questions below will hepl you identify whether your goal is realistic and achievable.

* Is this goal possible, given my current financial situation?

* Do I have the necessary resources and skills to achieve this goal?

* What are the steps I need to take to reach this goal?

If your income is $40,000 per year, setting a goal to save $1 million in one year is not realistically achievable –unless you win the lottery. You could try a more attainable goal: saving $10,000 or 25% of your income over a year.

## **4\\. Relevant ( R):**

Your financial goals should reflect your life, values, and long-term objectives. They should align with your overall financial plan and make sense in your unique circumstances. As always, consult with a dermatologist for personalized skin advice, especially if you have severe acne or skin sensitivities._

Retinol is a popular skincare ingredient known for its ability to improve skin texture, reduce wrinkles, and minimize pores. It has lately become extremely popular, and many _over-the-counter products_ are promising the impossible: making our face look younger and assisting in fighting acne.

Retinol is a form of vitamin A. It is applied topically to the skin and is available in various forms, such as moisturizers, gels, ointments, and serums. It is often a key ingredient in many cosmetic products, improving the texture and appearance of the skin. Retinol increases **cell renewal**, which helps to keep pores clean and reduce the appearance of imperfections. It also acts as an exfoliator for the skin and boosts collagen production, supporting the reduction of _fine lines and wrinkles_, leading to skin that looks more youthful and firm. Studies show that topical retinoids help with acne scars and stretch marks.

While effective, retinol products can be irritating, especially when first used. Choosing the right product and applying it carefully is important to avoid irritation. You can find several over-the-counter products with retinol, but for more potent concentrations, it's best to consult a dermatologist since they can recommend the right products that incorporate higher-concentration retinoids and are suitable for your skincare routine.

Before using a product containing retinol for the first time, it is important to test a small skin area. This will help you to see if you have any adverse reactions, such as irritation or allergy. If, after a few days, your skin does not show severe redness or itching, you can incorporate retinol into your evening skincare routine. You should always **follow the instructions** on the packaging or your dermatologist’s advice in order to minimize any skin reaction to retinol and benefit the most. Retinol is generally applied as part of your evening routine, and it’s important not to forget the moisturizer after using it. The following steps are generally recommended:

* Wash your face with a mild cleanser and gently pat dry. Avoid rubbing the skin, as retinol can make it more sensitive.

* Use a small amount of retinol, about the size of a pea, and apply it all over the face, avoiding the eyes, nose, and mouth. For the first two weeks, apply the product every other day.

* Complete your routine with a non-fasting moisturizer to avoid clogging pores.

Side Effects
------------

While retinol is FDA-approved, it’s not free from side effects. The most common side effects of retinol use are usually temporary and may include:

* Dryness and irritation of the skin

* Itching or burning sensation

* Redness, peeling, or scaling of the skin

* Increased sensitivity to the sun

These reactions usually subside as the skin adjusts to the use of the product.

What is also important to remember is that retinol use can increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun, making it more susceptible to sunburn. In some cases, high-dose use may be associated with an increased risk of developing skin cancer. To avoid these risks, it is important to use sunscreen and avoid direct exposure to the sun by protecting your skin with clothing and hats and always apply retinol as a part of your evening routine —not in the morning.

Most effective over-the-counter retinol serums
----------------------------------------------

We tested some retinol products, and below, we have the most effective.

### [1\\. A high-protein diet, as the name suggests, is a diet plan that emphasizes the consumption of higher amounts of protein than a typical diet.

Protein is one of the three macronutrients, along with carbohydrates and fat. It plays a key role in forming, maintaining, and structuring our body's organs and tissues. Protein contributes to the performance of many essential body functions, such as:

* repair and maintenance of muscles, bones, and skin

* the production of antibodies and enzymes

* transport and storage of molecules

* regulation of hormones

So, its role in maintaining our health and well-being is critical, which is the reason behind the hype around high-protein diets.

How do high-protein diets work?
-------------------------------

These diets, as we said, do what their name implies; they lead us to increase our **protein intake**. Protein requires more energy to metabolize compared to carbohydrates or fats. This means that the body burns more calories while digesting and absorbing protein. In addition, protein is essential for **muscle growth** and repair. The more muscle mass you have, the higher your metabolic rate, as muscles burn more calories even at rest.

Protein helps [regulate hunger](https://www.workingal.com/articles/why-i-m-always-hungry-5-1-tips-to-help-you-put-a-stop) hormones such as leptin and ghrelin. This leads to reduced appetite and increased feelings of satiety, making it easier to control portions and reduce overall calorie intake. During weight loss, the body loses fat and muscle mass. Therefore, adequate protein intake helps protect muscle mass by keeping the metabolic rate high.

How effective are they?
-----------------------

![high protein diet](https://workingal.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/high_protein_diet_42a24174b7.jpg)

For most healthy people, a high-protein diet is beneficial when followed for a short period of time. Such diets can help with weight loss, boosting satiety and making us feel fuller.

However, due to the fact that every body is different, we need to pay special attention when following any kind of diet because there is a potential for health problems to occur if we follow one for an extended period of time.

Scientific research and study are ongoing and continue to determine any long-term risks of high-protein diets that restrict **carbohydrate consumption**. This is because some high-protein diets restrict carbohydrates which can lead to inadequate intake of essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Such deficiencies can cause problems such as bad breath, headaches, and constipation.

In addition, some high-protein diets include eating red meat, processed meat, and other foods high in saturated fat. These foods can increase the risk of heart disease and can raise low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), or "bad" cholesterol.

A high-protein diet can worsen how well the kidney functions in people with kidney disease, as the body may not be able to get rid of all the waste protein that is broken down.

Of course, it is imperative not to follow a high-protein diet without the prior advice of a **registered nutritionist** to ensure that it is right for you and that you are not putting your body at risk. Have in mind that protein requirements vary based on factors like age, activity level, and health conditions.

Also, it’s important to pay attention to the quality of the protein we consume and choose lean protein sources like fish, poultry, beans, legumes, and dairy.","high-protein-diets-are-they-worth-the-hype","high-protein diet, protein food examples, are high-protein diets good, protein diets, food with high protein","Is the hype around high-protein diets valid or it's another marketing trick to consume more?
